Mystery Chocolate Box: June 2014

So as you’ve probably already figured out, I love mysteries and surprises, hence my pathological addiction to subscription boxes. So when the folks at Mystery Chocolate Box offered to send me a free box to review, there was no way I could turn it down. Chocolates and a mystery? Sounds like a perfect Friday night to me.

So this subscription is a little bit unusual in that it’s about the tasting experience as much as the actual chocolate box

So the skinny on the chocolate box, is that each month you receive three mystery chocolate bars. You spend some time tasting each one and trying to figure out what’s in them. Then you go online and submit your answers and if you get all 3 right, you win a prize. They make note of allergens in the materials that they send to you, but if you’re allergic to stuff that’s normally in chocolate, then you should probably skip this subscription.

The cost is:

$17.95 per month (for a monthly subscription)
$50.85 for a 3 month subscription
$191 for a year long subscription

Box #2

Now the first thing I noticed was how well packed the box was. My chocolate arrived with no melting at all.

Two of the three bars were dark chocolate and one was milk chocolate, I found one to be a bit too bitter for my taste, another was not too exciting, but the milk chocolate was just right.
Beyond the type of chocolate, I sort of gave up on the guessing. My brain was clouded by a Homer Simpson voice murmuring “mm, chocolate”. The chocolate wasn’t the usual Hershey type and I think $17.95 for 3 pretty large bars of higher quality chocolate to be a good price.

I think this would be a really fun box for a monthly family night with your kids. Make some pizza, play board games and for dessert have a chocolate tasting. It would also be fun for chick nights or maybe even paired with an evening of wine tasting or a nice distraction to break up book club arguments.

Since I’m endeavoring to lose weight, this subscription isn’t one I’d regularly subscribe to, but it’s definitely fun and I could see a lot of great potential in using it for parties and get-togethers.

Are you a chocaholic? If so, what’s your favorite type?
