Julep Maven: December 2014 – The Countdown Collection – Classic with a Twist Box

For December, Julep introduced “The Countdown Collection” featuring their new orbital eyeshadows. As one of the “grandmothered’ mavens with a non-customizable box, I opted for the Classic with a Twist box and then went a bit overboard with add-ons. (There was glitter involved and I just couldn’t help myself).
Big Julep Box

Julep sent me a giant box, with lots and lots of crinkle paper and my usual little box nestled inside. Julep went a bit overboard this season with the packing so I’m now searching for alternate uses of crinkle paper.

IlgaIlga Swatch
(Retail $14.00/Maven Price: $11.20)
Verdict: Like!
Description: Rich Bordeaux crème
The biggest section of my polish hoard is for dark reds so I opted for this classic box so I could nab this one. It’s very pretty and while not super exciting I think it’s a great shade for pedicures.

(Retail $14.00/Maven Price: $11.20)
Verdict: Gift
Description: Sophisticated, shimmery gold
If you love Julep than this one might seem familiar. Julep has now started to reissue one “retired” color each month and December’s was Sienna. I already own this shade so I included this in a Christmas gift. It’s both sophisticated and fun, so it’s a great addition to your polish collection. I do wish that Julep would feature the “retired” polishes as add-ons only since many of us long-term mavens already have them.

SupernovaSupernova Swatch
(Retail $18.00/Maven Price: $14.40)
Verdict: On the Fence
Description: Charcoal with electric orchid pearlescence
All the orbital eyeshadows looked so cool that it took me a long time to decide which ones to choose. I decided to gamble on this purple shade because I don’t have anything similar in my current makeup arsenal. The problem is that it sort of looks like a giant glittery bruise on me. I’ll definitely need to experiment with this color so I don’t look like Glenda the Good Witch gave me a black eye. Also keep in mind that these orbital shades are incredibly glittery—like holy,Batman that’s a lot of glitter, glittery.

MoonglowMoonglow Swatch
(Retail $18.00/Maven Price: $14.40)
Verdict: Hit!
Description: Silver with lilac pearlescence
I wanted to treat myself to another orbital eyeshadow so I could try to use them together. I’m sort of in love with any colors that use the word “moon” in them and I thought I could use the silver layered with all kinds of other shadows I own. This is basically a beautiful luminous silver glitter and with a light touch I think I could even get this to work for day time.

Silk Effect Topcoat:
(Retail $14.00/Maven Price: $11.20)
Verdict: Like
Description: A fast-drying, silk finish top coat.
I haven’t gotten a chance to try this out yet, but I’m giving it a positive review for the sole reason that I really want to see Julep making more interesting topcoats. If you’re not a polish collector, these types of topcoats can really expand your collection by offering different finishes for the polishes you already use. I’m looking forward to trying this one out with some metallics.

Reindeer Games Duo:
(Retail $28.00/Maven Price: $20.00)
Verdict: Hit!/Gift
Duo includes:
Neely (It Girl):
Sparkling cranberry full-coverage glitter
Nic (Bombshell): Black crimson crème
Neely Neely Swatch
I already own Nic and love the shade, so that one went into the gift pile. I bought this set exclusively to get Neely. I hate that Julep pairs these new polishes with old ones since it penalizes their most loyal customers who collect all the shades. I just wait until the set gets low enough in cost that the dupe(s) becomes just a free bonus. When I nabbed this set it was $7.99, so it was worth it for me, but I wouldn’t pay full price for it, even though I think Neely is gorgeous.

NellNell Swatch
(Retail $14.00/Maven Price: $11.20)
Verdict: Love!
Description: Blushing holographic full-coverage glitter
Photos do not do Nell justice. If magic could be a nail polish color, it would be this one. It is this beautiful pale pink with an amazing rainbow sparkle. It’s the shade every little girl who dresses up like a Princess wants to wear and every woman who remembers that fondly would enjoy gazing at. Even in the bottle this color is gorgeous and I consider it a Julep must have.

If you take 3 or more add-ons, Julep offers a free mystery gift.

So along with this lovely candy I received…
Free Gift
Blank Canvas Lip Pumping Primer: (Retail $22.00/Maven Price: $7.99)
Description: A multitasking primer that preps lips for flawless, all-day color.
Julep has been trying to unload these for a while, since they’ve been popping up in mystery boxes for some time, but it’s free so I can’t complain. I’m going to add this to my stack of lip primers that are going into some gifts.

Full Box

I paid $55.59 for all these items (including the freebie) and received a retail value of $142.00 and a maven value of $100.60, so I feel like I got a great value.

I really thought the orbital shadows were a fun new product even if I’m not sure I can pull off the looks. Nell was amazing and it was great to see the silk topcoat, but a lot of the other colors in this collection were a bit dull. Julep’s holiday collection on the other hand was a-mah-zing but you could only nab them in exclusive sets (like Neely in the Reindeer duo). I think that Julep creating two separate full collections really split their focus. They should have combined the two offerings into a fabulous December collection full of exclusive add-ons instead of a lackluster December collection and a fabulous, but hard to acquire Holiday set.
