Spiffster Tie Box: June 2016 & 20% off Coupon

Been procrastinating on Father’s Day?
If so, I might have just have a solution.   The wonderful folks at Spiffster, a premium tie subscription, sent me a box to review and a fabulous 20% off coupon.
Just use SUBSCRIPTIONTHERAPY to save 20% off your entire subscription (not just the first month, but the whole sub)!

How it works:
After you become a member, they send you a short survey that allows you to build your profile and deliver ties tailored to your preferences.  A fresh tie gets delivered to you monthly.  All ties are shipped on the 16th of each month.

What really sets this sub apart is that you get to customize the tie you receive, plus it’s super affordable.  A month to month sub is only $8.95, with discounts for prepaying 3 or 6 month subs.

Spiffster also offers the ability to purchase ties separately from the subscription in their Spiffster One Time Shop.

Now you may be wondering what $8.95 will get us?
(Me too).  Let’s jump in.

We start with really cute packaging:
Box

Print Tie
The Tie

Now subscribers typically choose their own tie, but mine was selected by Spiffster.  It’s a nice classic style and the quality is excellent.  I’ve gotten a lot of ties from men’s boxes and this is one of the few my boyfriend actually wanted to keep.

Also included was a card, with instructions on how to tie a specific knot.  I thought this was a great inclusion and I think a lot of guys would be interested in learning some of the different methods that they may not be accustomed to using.
Card

Verdict: Hit!
Spffister Tie Box
I’m really impressed with the quality you get for only $8.95.  I also really appreciate that this subscription is completely customized.  For a gentleman that needs to wear a tie every day, this is an easy, inexpensive way to build up a tie wardrobe.  I could also see this as a great gift for a recent grad that is heading into the business world.  If you’ve been looking at tie subs, this is definitely one to move to the top of your list.

Have you ever purchased a subscription as a gift?
If so, tell me about it in the comments!

Gentlemen & Co Noire Style Box: May 2016 & $5 off your First Box

Since Father’s Day is fast approaching, I figured for this lovely Monday, I’d focus on a Men’s subscription.  The wonderful Gentlemen & Co Noire Style Box, a men’s fashion accessory subscription, graciously sent me a box to review.

A little about this sub:
The Gentlemen & Co. Noire Style Monthly Subscription costs $28 per month, with free US shipping and you can cancel at any time.  (International subscriptions are available for $35 and do not include Esquire magazine.)

“Each monthly box will contain anywhere from 4 to 6 dapper accessories, such as pocket squares, lapel pins, tie bars and more… alongside the recent issue of Esquire Magazine. Each box will be completely coordinated by the members here at Gentlemen & Co. and easy to style, making it simple to dress to impress those around you. “

Something really special about this box is that 25% of recurring sales are also donated to a scholarship program set up to help students from low income families afford college.  So not only does Gentlemen & Co help you “dress to impress”, they are helping make the world a little better, box by box.

In addition to the items I received, subscribers will also get an issue of Esquire magazine.

Unfortunately, this box didn’t include an insert with info on the items and because I’m a lady (at least some of the time) I’m just going to leave out a verdict on each piece and instead comment on the overall box as a gift option.

Very stylish box, nice graphic logo:
Box
Open Box

Tie pin
Tie Bar
This is a very classic tie bar that would match any tie or outfit.  A very nice professional choice.

Pocket Square
Cotton Pocket Square

A simple white pocket square is another very classic choice. It will go with everything.

Tie
Skinny Necktie

Skinny neckties seem to be in fashion and I actually think the fabrication of the tie makes it a bit unique.  It seems like a wool blend and it gives a sort of casual chic vibe.

Pin
Lapel Pin
Not sure about this one.  I don’t know too many guys who would wear it, but it’s definitely a fun piece and the red would be a nice pop of color against a dark jacket.

Bracelet Bracelet Close
Beaded Bracelet

My boyfriend doesn’t wear jewelry but I’ve known quite a few guys that do, and I thought the colors of this bracelet were nicely understated and it had some lovely detail.

OVERALL
Noire Box May 2016
So let’s start with the value.  For $28, you receive all of the above plus an Esquire magazine.  The items all seemed well made and the colors would complement a wide variety of suits, so I think $28 is a more than fair price. The box itself has nice packaging for gift giving, and I feel like the guy who really enjoys dapper accessories would dig this box.  These types of subs are a fun way to keep fashion fresh and fun for men who need to wear suits regularly.  I personally love companies that give back, so knowing a portion of the sales go toward scholarships is a great bonus.  My one small criticism is that I’d really want an insert with info on the items and perhaps some suggestions for styling.  Hopefully future boxes will include that.

Have you ever purchased a box subscription for a man in your life?  If so, what did they think?

Heaven’s Honey Box: May 2016 & 15% Coupon Code!

Back in March, I filled you in on the launch of a brand new organic beauty box called Heaven’s Honey Box.  Not only did the lovely folks from Heaven’s Honey send me the May box to review, they also set me up with a great coupon code for my readers. For 15% off your first box, just use the code: SUBTHERAPY

This box costs $49.95 and features 5-8 full size, natural body care products.  I always get excited to see the first box in a subscription, so let’s get right to our natural and organic beauty splurges.

It looks like our featured brand this month is “Skin Nutrition from Nature with Love”.  That’s really quite a mouthful.  For the purposes of my sanity, I’m going to abbreviate them as SNNL because I don’t want to have to type out that whole sentence every time I refer to them.

Sugar ScrubSugar Scrub Open Face
Charcoal & Lemon Sugar Face Scrub

(Estimated Retail: $12.00)
Verdict: Hit!
I couldn’t find this exact scrub on the brand website so I linked to a similar one and used that pricing.  I love citrus and I’ve never tried a scrub with charcoal so I’m excited to add this to my routine.

Body Frosting
Whipped Shea Butter Body Frosting

(Estimated Retail: $6.00)
Verdict: LOVE!
This has all the good parts of frosting: sweet smelling creamy luxury–without any of its downfalls like stickiness (and lots of calories).  This was hands-down my favorite item in the box.  I couldn’t find this 2 oz. size so I linked to a larger one and scaled the price accordingly. It’s like marshmallow fluff that disappears into your skin. (Which sounds totally weird, but I promise its awesome).

Body Scrub
Green Tea & Cucumber Body Scrub

(Estimated Retail: $12.00)
Verdict: Like!
I couldn’t find this exact scrub either, so I’m guessing a lot of our products are exclusive to this box, which makes them even more fun. I’m working my way through a giant jar of Sabor body scrub, but I once I finish that I’ll give this one a try.  The scent of Green Tea & Cucumber seem perfectly suited to Summer.

Cuticle Softener
Cuticle Softener

(Estimated Retail: $???)
Verdict: Love!
I can’t find this at all on the website, but it’s a great product.  It’s incredibly moisturizing for your cuticles and really easy to apply.  I’ve been keeping it on my desk at home and applying it as I surf the net or work on my writing. Hopefully this product will make it on the SNNL website because I think a lot of people would love it.

ToothpasteToothpaste Open
Fluoride Free All Natural Mint Toothpaste, 4 oz

(Estimated Retail: $12.00)
Verdict: The stuff of my nightmares
While I appreciate natural products, this is possibly the hippiest product I’ve ever seen. The only thing that could make it worse was if it flavored with patchouli.  I swear I’ve had a nightmare where my toothpaste was black and made my teeth fall out. In any case, I’m guessing a lot of subscribers of organic and natural products would be interested in this, but it’s just not for me.  The included card came with directions on how to use this and frankly I found a lot of them pretty scary.  “use very little or it will be very oily” and “The paste is black, and will require you to swipe your sink out after each use”.  No, just no.  I’ll keep my fluoride filled deathpaste, thanks.

Lemon Soap
Lemon Poppyseed Handmade Soap
Orange Soap
Spiced Orange Handmade Soap

(Estimated Retail: $6.00 each)
Verdict: Like
This are really lovely handmade soaps and I think they are perfectly packaged for gift giving. I adore citrus scents so these are right up my alley.  I couldn’t find these exact soaps, so I estimated the retail based on soaps like this pumpkin one.

Lotion
Shea Butter Lotion 4.75 oz

(Estimated Retail: $10.00)
Verdict: Like!
This product had a nice consistency and wasn’t too greasy.  It’s slightly anti-climatic after the body frosting, but it’s still a nice product.  I couldn’t find this exact one on the SNNL site, so I’ve linked to a similar one.

OVERALL
Heaven's Honey May 2016

Verdict: Hit!
Even excluding the cuticle oil, this box came out an estimated retail value of $64, so it’s already well over the $49.95 price and that’s before you consider that most of these items seem to be exclusive to this sub box.  Except for the toothpaste, I really liked everything (and the body frosting was to die for).  With the exception of the aforementioned toothpaste, I think even subscribers new to natural beauty products would enjoy these products.  They felt very luxurious while still keeping their natural vibe.

What I’d like to see Heaven’s Honey do in future boxes is include a more detailed card on the contents.  I only received a card with instructions on how to use the toothpaste and sugar scrubs.  I really want a list of everything in the box, with a bit of description and why it was included.  I think it adds a lot to a subscription service when you get more info about the contents.  Still, this was a great start for a natural beauty sub!

April Irish Taste Club & 10% Off Code!

I’ve got a fabulous culinary treat for you all today with my review of the April Irish Taste Club box plus an extra special coupon for 10% off when you sign up (use code therapy10).

The awesome folks from Irish Taste Box, graciously sent me a box to review for you all.  I love international food boxes so I was excited to give this one a shot.

A little about the sub:
Box
Each month, Irish Taste Box will send  7-9 sweet and savory products including handmade chocolate, artisan jams and chutneys, baking mixes, and specialty condiments sourced directly from Ireland’s finest independent producers. Each box will feature an explainer card giving exclusive recipes for our products and the inspirational stories behind their producers. It’s like an Irish farmers’ market direct to your door!”

Irish Taste Box is based in the west of Ireland and one of their core values is to help small Irish producers get a new route to market and a chance to showcase Ireland’s best outside of the island.  For many or the included products/producers the Irish Taste Box will be the first time they have been sold outside of Ireland.

The cost is $44 per month, $120 for 3 months, or $420 for 12 months.

I love learning about small makers and trying new foods so I’m excited to dive into this one.
The lovely packaging includes a detailed card, explaining each items and including recipes and hints on how to use the products.

Chips
O’Donnell’s Mature Cheese and Onion Crisps

(Estimated Retail: $1.80)
Description: “You call them potato chips in the US.  We call them crisps in Ireland.  Either way, no-one can quibble over the taste of these beauties.  They’re the real deal wmade with cheddar from the Little Milk company in Tipperary.  Who can resist finishing the whole bag once they’ve opened them?  Why not go really native and try them in a white bread sandwich with Your Daily Bread kit?  Now you’re talking!”.
Verdict:  Where can I find more!
These were so very delicious.  When we ate them my boyfriend turned to me and asked “Where can we get more of these?”  Unfortunately these seem hard to come by.  I did hunt down what appears to be a match over at foodireland.com, but it is out of stock.  I’d love to see Irish Taste Club start offering an option to buy the foods from boxes on their site.  As an aside, why is it that America is considered such a fatty country with the worst junk food, when the UK puts chips/crisps on white bread and turns it into a sandwich? Although Taco Bell does put Doritos in like everything, so okay.…you win this round.

Marmalade
Follain Whiskey Marmalade

(Suggested Retail: $7.99)
Description: “What is it about proper marmalade with just a jigger of the ‘water of life’ in it that makes you want to eat it by the spoon straight from the jar? Follain jams and preserves are mad with masses of fruit so they taste as close to homemade as you can get.  Try this one in our Marmalade Bread and Butter Pudding recipe and you’ll have lots left in the jar for toast at breakfast time.”
Verdict: Hit!
My mornings would probably be a lot better with a touch of whiskey in my breakfast.  The included recipe for Marmalade Bread and Butter pudding sounds intriguing, but I may end up using this instead for a shortbread tart recipe that I make.  Oddly enough I found this product available at Walmart, so if I fall in love with it, it should be easy to replenish.

Coffee
Red Rooster Coffee

(Suggested Retail: $???)
Description: “Ready to taste the best small batch roasted coffee in Ireland? It’s a blend of three different beans from Colombia, Ethiopia and Kenya.  They got a four-page letter from one grateful customer for what they call their ‘all-rounder’ coffee.  You don’t have to go that far, but a comment on our Facebook/Twitter might get you a free bag in your next box.”
Verdict:  Like!
I’m not a huge coffee drinker, so I passed this one along to my Mom. I do think it was a great item to include and that most subscribers would really enjoy it.  It looks like you can order from Red Rooster but you’d have to buy two bags and that would cost you $20 American, but I’m not sure of the size, so I couldn’t really guess at a retail value on this.  The included card also listed “5 rules for a perfect cup” and #1 was never put your coffee in the fridge.  So many people have told me that’s the best place to keep coffee but it seems they were wrong.  My sub boxes teach me something new every day.

Dressing
Harnett’s Blackberry Vinaigrette

(Suggested Retail: $5.77)
Description: “The Harnett family’s oils are justifiably renowned for their great flavors.  They’ve been growing oilseed rape and hemp on their land for 400 years.  There they have combined their award-winning rapeseed vinegar and local Armagh blackberries to make a dressing that’s perfect for winter salads.  We also love it drizzled over grilled fish and roasted vegetables”.
Verdict:  Hit!
Vinaigrette’s are my go to salad dressing and I’m exciting to try some from a farm that’s been growing on their land for 400 years. Time to stalk my Pinterest boards for some summer salad recipes that feature blackberries.

Soda Bread
Our Daily Bread Soda Bread

(Estimated Retail $5.48)
Description: “The Irish tradition of yeast-free breads goes back millennia.  Soda bread is eaten for breakfast topped with sausage, bacon and egg and toasted at any time of the day.  This kit takes out the faff of measuring and weighing.  We think it’s a great idea and we love that you bake it in the container.  It’s home baking with the hassle.”
Verdict:  Love!
I love baking so an Irish Soda bread kit is right up my alley.  The estimated retail is the value of just this one bread, but in order to purchase this from the link provided, you need to buy sets of 3 and shipping outside the UK/Northern Ireland would cost you a bit more, so it’s not entirely accurate for cost.

Salt
Irish Atlantic Chilli and Paprika Sea Salt

(Estimated Retail: $9.99)
Description: “The Wild Atlantic Way is a rich larder.  The sea salt form this company is gathered from the western shores of Ireland and some is sold au naturel.  They also smoke it and add herbs and spices like these.  The Chilli and Paprika variety is great as a seasoning on just about anything but we particularly like it with pasta and on grilled fish, chicken and meat..”
Verdict:  Hit!
I love getting seasonings in boxes.  It’s a great way to get the flavors of another locale and you get so much use out of them.  I think this will pair really well with chicken recipes.  The included card had a recipe for flavored butter using this salt as well.

Chocolate
Cocoa Bean Rose and Pistachio Chocolate

Description: “We’re a nation of explorers and we’re always finding new flavor combinations on our travels. This combination has a Middle Eastern vibe which we love.  It’s like Turkish Delight without the goo, so say the good people who make it in Dingle, Co. Kerry.  Eat this in big chunks straight from the packet, with a cup of coffee.  It won’t last!”
(Estimated Retail: $3.55)
Verdict: Exactly like Turkish Delight, disappointing
Turkish Delight sounds so amazing and wondrous and mysterious.  Like a candy that promises happiness and wish fulfillment.  Sadly, it sounds so much better than it tastes, which is like gelatinous roses.  Unfortunately this bar is just as disappointing. It has too much rose and not enough pistachio, which leaves it without much crunch and tasting like someone spilled perfume on chocolate.  I really wanted to like this, but it just wasn’t for me.  It’s definitely a unique product though and I had fun trying it out.

OVERALL
Irish Taste Club April 2016
Verdict:
  Hit!
This box really gave me a feel for what kind of food folks in Ireland produce and enjoy.  I thought the box had a nice mix of sweet and savory items, and the included recipes and hints on how to use the products really added to the experience.

It’s very hard to get an overall estimated retail value because so many of these items would need to be purchased internationally with higher shipping, or in sets of multiple items.

I received this box for free, but it would have cost me $44.  I think that’s fair price for all the items it included.  You’d be hard-pressed to find artisanal handmade food products in the US, in each of the categories represented, that total $44.

People always assume that I’m Irish (or Scottish) and I’ve always wanted to visit Ireland so I can finally learn what it’s like to blend in.  Until I save up for airfare, this box was a great way to get a little taste of Ireland in my NJ apartment.

Do you enjoy trying new foods from different countries?

Now let’s get to the gorgeous:
Open Box
Our theme is May Flowers:
Label

Necklace & Oil Open Necklace
Aromatherapy Diffuser Necklace
(Estimated Retail: $26.00)
Description: ”Diffuse your favorite essential oils everywhere you go!  This beautiful aromatherapy pendant necklace looks great and gives you the benefit of using essential oils without carrying and reapplying through the day.  To us, simply open the locket and drop 1 drop of your favorite essential oil onto the included felt pad.  You can replace the pad to switch oils, or when it becomes worn.”
Peace + Calm Essential Oil

(Estimated Retail: $6.00)
Description: “Peace &Calm essential oil is a gentle sweet blend of Ylang, Ylang, Geranium Lavender, Rosewood & Wild Orange. With a comforting, floral aroma, this oil creates a relaxing environment that’s especially great for home with children. You’ll love that you can use this oil for your children’s bedtime and then for yourself for a moment of quiet after the house has settled down.”
Verdict:  Love!
You know I get a lot of sub boxes, and I’ve never received anything like this.  Not only can you use essential oils on the little pad, but I tried it with my favorite perfume and it worked just as well. This is a fabulous alternative for folks with sensitive skin that loves scents – you can wear a perfume or an oil and not actually have it touch your skin.  You can also customize the color that peeks through the necklace by adding your own felt pad.  As for the oil included, it didn’t give me a headache (which is a miracle) and I found it quite pleasant. Normally I’m not a fan of Ylang Ylang, but it’s balanced out by the orange.

Glycolic Rose Peel
Glycolic Rose Peel + Mask
(Estimated Retail 2 oz: $62.00; .5 oz size included: $15.00)
Description: “This two-in-one treatment peel and mask diminishes dark spots and provides instant radiance in as little as 3 minutes.  It contains an array of powerful active ingredients – Rosa Damascena and glycolic acid-that work together to brighten, lighten, and create an even, luminous complexion.  This revitalizing peel smells of fresh roses.  With 10% glycolic acid, it is not meant for sensitive skin.“
Verdict:  Like
Peels scare me a bit and I always feel better trying them when it’s a natural product.  This states it’s not for sensitive skin but I have successfully used glycolic peels before so I do plan to try it out. The pamphlet comes with detailed instructions.  The only reason I’m giving this a “like” instead of a “hit” is because folks with more sensitive skin wouldn’t be able to use this and could miss out on one item in their box.

ShadowsSwatches
Pure Mineral Eyeshadows:

Pink Peony

(Estimated Retail: $12.00)
Description: ”Pink Peony is an invitation to grace.  Luminous and subtle, it inspires and evokes a unique facet.  The shade exudes an immediate and incredible freshness, leaving behind a soft trail of shimmer. Wear it alone for everyday or pair with the Cranberry Rose and Creeping Violet for a charmingly rich look.”
Cranberry Rose
(Estimated Retail: $12.00)
Description: ”A light balance of sweet and tart.  Lovely pink rose bus surrounded by sweet shimmer and tart cranberry make this eyeshadow both feminine and romantic.  A wonderful look for afternoon or evening.”
Creeping Violet
(Estimated Retail: $12.00)
Description: ”Creeping violet descends into a hidden labyrinth, where decadent purple gives way to darker pleasures.  Three violet tones dance with exotic shimmer and mulberry wine for creamy depth. Use as eyeshadow or mix with a few drops of water and line eyes for a seductive and enticing look.”
Verdict:
 Love!
These colors all work together and definitely fit the Flowers theme.  I love the Peony shade.  It blends in well with my skintone and works so well layered with tons of different eyeshadow colors.  The other two shades are really lovely and I definitely need to experiment with the Violet.  With my pale skin and blue undertones, purple can sometimes make me look like I was punched in the face, so I need to tread carefully.  The color is amazing though and I think it would be gorgeous on folks with darker skin.

Rose Butter Balm
Fresh Rose Butter Balm

(Estimated Retail: $18.00)
Description: “Fresh Rose Butter Balm delivers intense 24-hour moisture for normal to dry skin.  A dense, concentrated balm made with exotic Rosa damascene absolute. This soothing balm made with coconut and rose oils delivers soothing hydration wherever you need it. With its concentrated formula, a little goes a long way for petal soft skin.  Suggested Usage: apply to lips, cuticles, or even heels.  Dab on lightly over makeup to give cheeks a healthy glow.”
Verdict:  LOVE!
This is my absolute favorite item in the box.  The rose scent is natural and light. The butter balm is super hydrating, but not greasy and heavy like balms can sometimes be.  This is perfect for getting your feet ready for sandal weather.

OVERALL
Orglamix May 2016
Verdict:
Love!
The products in this box all felt perfect for Spring.  The scents were natural, light and appealing, the colors were lovely and there was a great variety including the unusual necklace. This was definitely a well curated box, and I think most subscribers would love it.  I couldn’t find any of these items on the Orglamix site yet so subscribers are also getting access to exclusive shades and products.

I received this box for free, but the regular month-to-month price is $29.00 and I thought that was an incredible value.  The estimated retail value (based on the included card) came out to $101.00.   Natural, vegan beauty products can be pricey so the value you are getting is awesome, and that’s before you factor in the creativity and exclusive items, so $29 seems like a really great deal.

Oil
Lucky Chick Essential Oil Rollerball

(Estimated Retail: $18.00)
Description: A blend of bright, whimsical essential oils for good luck. Packed with a potent pampering to make you feel like a lucky chick. When you need good things to happen yesterday!   The best spots to apply it? For maximum benefits, apply generously, rolling on in a circular motion to pulse points. Inhale deeply after each application. Reapply frequently throughout the day.  Blended from 100% pure and natural, steam-distilled peppermint, spearmint, eucalyptus and wintergreen essential oils known to attract good luck and protect against environmental threats. With its unique aroma, Lucky Chick offers a fragrant, natural, and effective alternative to nurture and balance emotions. Therapeutic grade.”
Verdict:  Hit!
Apparently luck smells like mint and herbs.  I’m not usually into aromatherapy because I’m sensitive to scents, but I applied this one when my allergies were acting up a bit to see if the mint would help me feel a little better and it actually did.  The oil also rolls really smoothly from the applicator which isn’t always the case with this type of packaging.  If you want to try out aromatherapy or already love it, give this brand a shot.

Lip Balm
Lime Aromatherapy Balm

(Estimated Retail: $6.50)
Description: “Aromatherapy Balm glides smoothly across your lips to create a protective barrier of active botanicals that lock in moisture and promote a firm and supple texture.  Organic coconut oil, candellila wax and sweet almond oil leave lips feeling soft and supple while peptides increase elasticity.  Natural aroma of lime provides a sweet and aromatic finish.  (This balm contains a small amount of lime essential oil.  Although the natural ingredients in our balm provide some sunscreen protection, lime essential oil can make skin more sensitive to prolonged sun exposure.).”
Verdict:  Miss
Unfortunately I didn’t find this balm very hydrating and the lime oil additive means you shouldn’t wear it in the sun, so for a pale redhead like me, it’s not a great option.  It’s not a available on the Orglamix site so it was probably a special addition for March. (I went ahead and linked to their other balms).  Ithink I’d really like some of their other flavors including Hot Apple Cider and Red Velvet.

Lip Scrub
Shamrock Shake Lip scrub

(Estimated Retail: $12.00)
Description: ”Shamrock Shake lip polishing sugar scrub buffs away dead and flaking skin with natural sugars suspended in a blend of natural emollients to leave skin supple and smooth and perfectly prepared for dressing up with color or going comfortably au natural.  A refreshing hint of sweet minty flavor is a delicious bonus.”
Verdict:  Like!
This was obviously a special for St. Patrick’s day so it’s not up on the Orglamix site.  It did have a lovely smell and the texture seemed just right for a scrub.  Unfortunately I didn’t close the lid quite tight enough so it dried out before I could try it out (cue sad face).  I thought it was a fun, seasonally appropriate item that had a great spa vibe to it.

THE EYE ASSORTMENT
Eye Products Swatches
Eye-rish + Limerick

(Estimated Retail: $12.00 each)
Description: ”This high-tech formula creates a glittering wave of sequin-like sparkle, leaving your eyes glistening like jewels.  The perfect blend of pigment and pearl delivers a weightless feel on the eye, leaving lids glamorous and glowing.”
Verdict:  Hit!
Mineral eyeshadows are wonderful for blending and these went on smoothly.  I loved these seasonal shades (first two swatches above – from left to right) and think they’ll look great with my coloring.  Limerick is a bit more of a highlight color, while Eye-rish is much better for every day.  I know I’ll have a lot of fun with these.

Pot of Gold glitter pigment
(Estimated Retail: $10.00)
Description: A versatile glitter makeup for the face and body…A little bit goes a long way. Just pat on the skin with a wet brush for a long-lasting effect.”
Verdict:  Not for everyone, but cool
This is obviously not something you wear every day unless you’re Katy Perry or a stripper, but it’s still way cool.  This is an item reserved for special occasions and Halloween, but it applied pretty easily and is a lot of fun.  Since the box was full of other practical items, I feel like this was a fun addition and fitting of Orglamix’s St. Patrick’s Day theme.  I couldn’t find this particular version on the Orglamix site, but there are lots of other glitter pigments.  I used the retail price on the included card, since the other pigments are priced a bit higher.

Catch a leprechaun
Catch a Leprechaun

(Estimated Retail: $18.00)
Description: ”This silky smooth cream formula lets you go sheer, dramatic or anywhere in between for depth and color that lasts. Infused with coconut and avocado oils to help soothe the sensitive eye area and minimize the look of lines and wrinkles.”
Verdict:  LOVE!
This is my absolute favorite item in the box.  I love cream shadow/liner combos but they can dry out and get hard to apply and it’s actually hard to find colors that appeal to me.  This shade is really funky – a great bronzey brown-green-gold amalgamation that I think would look great on just about every skin tone (swatch above on the far right).  You can layer it for more color and combined with my eye primer it had great staying power.  It also feels good on your lids, which is probably due to the coconut and avocado oils.  Like most of the items this appears to be specially made for this box.

OVERALL
March Orglamix 2016
Verdict:
Love!
I received this box for free, but the regular month-to-month price is $29.00 and I thought that was a great value for the products you received.  If you purchased these all from the Orglamix site they’d be $88.50 and that’s excluding the fact that many of them seem to be limited edition.  Natural beauty products tend to be pricier than regular ones and it can be hard to find brands and items you like.  This box gave a nice mix of practical and fun items that fit the box theme.  It had a sense of playfulness that was very appealing–plus each box you buy helps feed a hungry child so it’s just a win-win all around.

If you are looking for vegan, cruelty free makeup that’s a lot of fun, checkout the Orglamix Glam Box.

This box has the cutest little logo.
Logo
Inside, a gorgeous sturdy mint box (that has already been repurposed to hold my backup makeup stash).
Box
The lovely packaging includes a comprehensive “culture guide” that has a perfect little holder built into the lid and reveals that our country this month is: Portugal!
Open Box Lid with Guide
The guide tells us about the products, Portuguese culture, where the items are from and how to use them. It also features a coupon code (PORTUGAL20) for 20% off all Portuguese item sin their online shop. I was really impressed with the detail and thought that put into the insert. It offers a lot of interesting information and is perfectly designed for a cooking enthusiast.

The guide welcomes us to Portugal and let us know this box is curated by first-generation American born to Portuguese parents, Chef George Mendes. He is a chef-owner of Aldea and Lupolo, both in New York City and the author of the cookbook My Portugal.

Now let’s dive into our expertly chosen Portuguese foods!
Codfish
Codfish in Olive Oil
from Briosa Gourmet
(Retail: $7.90)
Description: “Codfish (called bacalhau in its typical, salted form), is one of Portugal’s most iconic foods. Briosa Gourmet wraps their canned codfish in beautiful packaging reminiscent of hydraulic tiles, an art form in which pigments are pressed onto cement”.
Verdict: Intriguing
As a first generation American from Italian immigrants, codfish often made an appearance (although we call it baccalà). As a kid I was pretty anti-fish, but I definitely would like to revisit it and see if I can appreciate it now that I’m all grown up. The included guide offered recipes for codfish fritters and I think that will be how I try this out.

Hot Sauce
Piri Piri Hot Sauce
from Paladin
(Retail: $8.00)
Description: “A quintessentially Portuguese condiment, piri piri hot sauce was first introduced to Europe in the 15th century when Christopher Columbus came back home with piri piri peppers. Since then, the sauce has been used throughout the country. This one is extra hot for extra heat.”
Verdict: Hit!
I’ve got a cabinet and fridge full of different hot sauces so I’m excited to try out a new one. I’m thinking this might work well mixed into a dipping sauce for those codfish fritters.

Lemon Cookies
Lemon Cookies
by Casa Lucena
(Retail: $6.50)
Description: “Committed to preserving the culinary traditions of Portugal, Casa Lucena’s cookies are made according to old, Portuguese recipes. These ones have a delicious lemon flavor that makes it hard to resist finishing the whole box in one sitting!”
Verdict: Love!
These cute little cookies were light, crispy and delicious. They went well with tea and would be fabulous for a ladies lunch or a bridal shower.

Pumpkin Jam
Pumpkin and Hazelnut Jam RARE by Quinta de Jugais

(Retail: $8.90)
Description: “RARE by Quinta de Jugais crafts premium spreads in Serra da Estrela using traditional Portuguese recipes. One of the most popular fruit preserves in the country, pumpkin jam is delicious over toast or alongside a selection of hard and pungent cheeses.”.
Verdict: Love!
I adore jams and this one sounds different than any I’ve tried. Next time I entertain I think I’ll serve it as part of a cheese plate and alongside some fresh bread.

Onions
Caramelized Onions with Balsamic Reduction and Port Wine

by Casa da Prisca
(Retail $7.50)
Description: “Casa da Prisca specializes in producing the same culinary specialties that the company’s founders grew up to know and love over four generations ago. This spread is made with port, one of Portugal’s most iconic spirits, and is best enjoyed with cheese.”
Verdict: Hit!
I feel like I could get creative with this and use it in a lot of different ways, like on a bruschetta or  different kinds of appetizers. I’ll have to spend some time experimenting.

Olive Oil
Extra-Virgin Olive Oil Clasico
by Olivais Do Sul
Description: “This versatile olive oil is a perfect addition to a variety of dishes. The olives used to make it are grown in central Portugal and are cold pressed to preserve their complex aroma and distinct flavor.”
(Retail 25 oz: $24.90; Estimated Retail 4.2 oz: $4.18)
Verdict: Love!
Olive oil is a staple in my kitchen, but I’ve never tried one made from Portuguese olives so I’m excited to taste this one.

Black Tea
Apple and Cinnamon Black Tea by IT.
Description: “This infusion is made by blending black tea with leaves, flowers, and fruit grown in the mountains of Serra da Estrela in eastern Portugal. Apple and cinnamon aroma makes this tea a wonderful cold weather pick-me-up.”
(Retail: ???)
Verdict: Love!
Unfortunately I couldn’t find this in the Try the World shop so I don’t have a retail price, but it was absolutely lovely. I served it with the lemon cookies and had a fancy little tea time in my living room. I think I’ll try this out next as an iced tea.

Sea Salt
Sea Salt and Lemon
by Hands on Earth
Description: “Committed to sustainability and healthful living, Hands on Earth specializes in producing organic herbs and seasonings. This finishing salt is made free of pesticides and chemicals, and lemon adds a zesty finish to any dish.”
(Retail: $9.50)
Verdict: Hit!
Sea Salt is a staple in my kitchen and this lemon version will be great for summer dishes. I make a shrimp and orzo salad that I think would pair perfectly with this.

OVERALL
Try the World Box Portugal
Verdict:
Love!
This was one of the best food boxes I’ve tried. I love international cuisine and I felt like I learned a lot about Portuguese food from the items included and the inserts. They also feature small businesses and artisanal goods that you might never be able to find otherwise. The items inspired me to come up with new recipes. The online shop gives you the option to keep buying the items you love and it makes it easy to search by different countries.

I received this box for free, but I’d gladly pay $39 for what I received and if I wasn’t in saving mode I’d be signing myself up for this immediately. (Although I may just break down and do it anyway). Without even factoring in the tea, the retail value of this box was $52.48 and it had a nice mix of savory and sweet as well as cooking and snack items. All around I thought this was an amazing box.

This sub is really packaged perfectly for gift giving. If your Mom loves trying out new foods, I think this would make an awesome Mother’s Day gift (especially with the 15% off code).

Do you enjoy trying new foods? If so, what’s your favorite new culinary discovery?

The Story of Perfume box by Harvey Prince Organics: February 2016 & Promotion!

Today I’ve got something totally outside the box for me (pun intended): A perfume subscription! The wonderful folks from Harvey Prince Organics sent me their February The Story of Perfume box to review for you guys. They are also offering a special promotion for free mini perfume rollers (just pay for shipping). Jump down below for all the details.

Now the name Harvey Prince Organics might be familiar to some of you since they have popped up in a lot of Birchboxes. I’ve tried a few of their products and enjoyed them, so I was excited to see what their own box sub would have to offer.

Now first a little about what this sub includes:

To start 100% of their products are cruelty free, vegan & gluten free!

“Each monthly box comes with two private blend, luxe Harvey Prince perfumes available only in The Story of Perfume. These exclusive 7ml roller ball fragrances are made of only the finest essential oils & highest-quality natural ingredients.”

Fresh French Bergamot. Dewy Bulgarian Rose. Sensual Australian Sandalwood. Lush Italian Lemon. Sweet Japanese Sakura. Rich Assamese Oud. Spicy Kashmiri Saffron. These are just some of the notes our private blend fragrances in The Story of Perfume may contain!

Each box also has two samples from our best-selling bath, hair, & body lines. Ranging in size from 15ml to 30ml, you may receive our color-safe shampoo & conditioner, skin-softening body butter, or exfoliating shower gel, among other customer faves!

Lastly, The Story of Perfume contains two 2ml samples of our most popular luxury fragrances for women from our best-selling line of perfumes. From sweet to spicy, sensual to soothing, these perfumes will make you smell beautiful & feel happy!”

The cost of this sub is $22 a month, with a discount for purchasing a year’s subscription.

If you’re a regular reader you know I’m super sensitive to perfumes and super picky, so I’ll do my best to evaluate these on a larger scale and how I think they’d appeal to most folks.

I love love LOVE (did I say love) the style of their box. The packaging is so fairy tale appealing that it feels like a gift. They’ve already scored points with me and I haven’t even opened it up yet.

Sandalwood
Mysore Sandalwood
(7mL: $30.00)
Description: “…the scent of sweet cardamom, spicy cumin, soft clary sage, dewy rose, and soothing chamomile danced with deep cypress, clean musk, warm amber, and Mysore sandalwood notes”
Verdict: For folks that like musky, woodsy scents
I’m not a fan of musky scents and this one is a bit on the stronger side, but it’s not overpowering and I feel like it would appeal to ladies who don’t want something super sweet or floral. If you want to try this for yourself, you can get it home just for the cost of shipping. Add it to your cart and use the code EXOTICINDIA.

Kashmiri Saffron
Kashmiri Saffron
(7mL: $30.00)
Description: “Spicy!
Verdict: For the ladies that like unusual scents.
I couldn’t find this one on the website so I’m guessing it’s sold out, but I’m sure if you shoot Harvey Prince an email they will let you know if it becomes available again.  I thought this was a really unique scent and I think it will appeal to the folks that like to experiment with their beauty products.

Sincerely Body Cream
Sincerely Body Cream
(.05 oz 3.00)
Description: An intensely moisturizing and deeply nourishing blend of Shea butter and sweet almond oil, combined with extracts of French bergamot and South African freesia, Sincerely Body Cream brings out your body’s natural luster, giving you silky smooth skin all day long. Infused with Harvey Prince Sincerely perfume.”
Verdict: A sweet floral
This was a touch too floral for me personally, but I think a lot of ladies would really like this scent. I’ve tried Harvey Prince’s other body creams and found them to be quite moisturizing so I’m sure a lot of subscribers would dig this.

Eau Divine
Eau So Divine
(8.8ml: $23.00)
Description: Delicate Japanese lily, Intoxicating Moroccan Jasmine & sweet Iris softly release into the air. Warm Madagascar Vanilla, deep Indian Patchouli, Sensual Dry Woods & Clean Musk stir you with their aromatic intensity.
Verdict: Floral Musk
This is a floral musk that I think would appeal to ladies who like very feminine scents. Personally it’s not quite to my taste (I’m very anti-Patchouli) but I think this would appeal to folks that that have a bit of a bohemian sensibility.

Sincerely
Sincerely
(8.8ml: $23.00)
Description: Notes: Indonesian Clove Bud, Australian Sandalwood, Moroccan Rose, French Bergamot, Indian Tuberose, Japanese Orange Flower, Lebanese Cedarwood, Turkish Cyclamen, South African Freesia.”
Verdict: A sweet floral
This is the same scent as the lotion and I appreciate that we got two different types of items in the same scent so subscribers could layer them. As I mentioned earlier I think this is a solid scent that will appeal to a lot of women.

Keravegan
Keravegan Hair Masque
(1 oz: $3.00)
Description: Our 100% formaldehyde-free hair smoothing therapy. Transform your tresses with our nourishing and hydrating Keravegan hair masque. Made with the best organic Argan, Coconut and Sweet Almond oils + blended with Shea Butter, Papaya, Lemon and Mandarin extracts, Keravegan moisturizes and softens your hair, bringing out its natural brilliance from root to tip. Sulfate-Free + Paraben-Free.”
Verdict: My favorite item!
This is my favorite item in the box. The perfume on this product was noticeable but not overpowering and it didn’t’ stick with my hair endlessly like some over-scented hair products can do. It left my hair soft and not weighed down.

OVERALL
Harvey Prince March 2016
Verdict:
Hit!
The first thing I was impressed with (besides the gorgeous packaging) was that none of these scents had that strong synthetic give-me-a-headache-immediately issue. While a lot of the fragrances weren’t my taste, I could tell the perfumes were high quality. Each of the 7mL roller balls normally costs $30, so for $22.00 you two of them plus a wide variety of samples. I think that’s a great value. If you know someone who loves perfumes or is really into vegan/cruelty free/gluten free beauty this might be the sub for them.

So I promised you all you’d see more men’s subscription boxes and today I’m delivering. The lovely folks at Harrison Blake Apparel Co. graciously sent me their February box to review.

A little about this sub:
“SELECTED by Harrison Blake is a $25/mo. subscription club that delivers 5 classy accessories and unique products. Each box will contain 1 necktie and 4 additional accessories, such as pocket squares, lapel pins, tie bars and more… – each box will be completely coordinated and easy to style, making it simple to dress to impress. This box costs $25 per month and shipping in the US is free. This sub ships to Canada and internationally but that will cost additional in shipping. For 30% off anything on the Harrison Blake website use code MAR11 at Checkout.

Now let’s check out the box.  Super cute logo.
Box Open Box
Tie Bar
H.B. Scissors Tie Bar
(Suggested Retail: $14.00)
I thought this was a really fun and unique tie bar. Definitely not a run of the mill style.

Pocket Square
Cotton Pocket Square

(Suggested Retail: $10.00)
I loved the print on this pocket square and the finishing at the edge is really lovely. Definitely a nice quality item and I think I’ll be stealing it for myself and keeping it in my purse for a classier alternative to a Kleenex.

Tie
Knit Necktie

(Suggested Retail: $16.00)
I thought this tie was another unique style and had some hipster type charm to it. It’s a younger style and I think it’s definitely a fun choice as we head into spring.

Socks
H.B. Polka Dot Socks
(Suggested Retail: $12.00)
I couldn’t find these on the Harrison Blake website so I’m going with the value listed on the included card. I’m a sucker for polka dots and these coordinate nicely with all the other items.

Bracelet
Beaded Bracelet
(Suggested Retail: $15.00)
This one also wasn’t available on the website so I’m using the value from the included card. I don’t know too many guys who wear these style bracelets, but this one seems comfortable and matches back with the other accessories.

OVERALL
Harrison Blake February 2016
Obviously I’m not a guy so I can’t really review this the way I do a lot of my other boxes. So to start with let’s look at the value. The cost of the box is $25 and I get a estimated retail value of $67. Now that can be tricky since these items appear to be exclusive to Harrison Blake, however just looking at the quality of what’s included I do think $25 is more than a fair price for this box.

I really like that the accessories have more unusual styling than a lot of other boxes I’ve seen. These seem to skew a bit younger and more fun and I appreciate that they all coordinate with each other.

The March box is currently sold out, but I’m sure there will be more available for April. If you know a guy who has a lot of fun with his accessories, I think he’d really enjoy this box.

Do you any of the men in your life purchase subscription boxes? If so, which ones?

Peaches & Petals: February 2015, March Spoiler & 50% Off Coupon Code!

Today I’ve got another fun lifestyle box from Peaches & Petals. They kindly sent me their February box to review along with a great coupon code. If you’re a first time subscriber, you can use the code PEACHTHERAPY for 50% off your first month’s box, when you purchase a monthly subscription. (Gift subscriptions are excluded.).

For Februrary the theme falls in with Valentine’s day with a “how sweet it is”.

Let’s Jump In.

We start with our large, lovely, logoed box.
Box
Pillow
Love Themed Throw Pillow Cover (suggested retail: $???)
Description: “Show a little love to your favorite furniture piece with this darling decorative pillow cover! Has a linen feel and look to it complete with a hidden zipper so you can wash it too! We’re in love!
Verdict: Like
This item was the spoiler from last month and I actually love the design and color. It’s got a “love” theme but not too overly sweet. The only reason this is a “like” instead of a “hit” is because the print on the pillow has some weird spots where it looks like the ink ran or is blotchy. I can’t tell if it’s a purposeful part of the design or an accident. If it’s the former I wish it ran through it more consistently throughout the graphic. In any case, the colors match perfectly with my décor and I’ll most likely be using this in my bedroom. Swapping out covers on your throw pillows is a great, low cost way to decorate for the seasons, so I think including this was a great idea.

Candle
Sugar Sweet Soy Candle
(suggested retail: $10)
Description: “Love is in the air and so is the delightful aroma of this clean burning candle!
Verdict: Like
As the name implies the scent of this candle is quite sweet, but it’s not overbearing and doesn’t give me a headache like so many other fragrances. Soy candles are great and this one is a nice size.

Salt & pepper
Love Birds Salt & Pepper Shakers
(suggested retail: .99)
Description: “Whether nestled beak-to-beak in the box or standing cheek-to-cheek on your tabletop these chic love birds salt and pepper shakers inspire love with every meal!”
Verdict: Miss
These are quite small and in google searching it looks me like they are really designed to be wedding favors. Now I’ve seen tiny salt and pepper shaker like these in bulk sets so that at holiday meals you can put them at each place setting, or have them in different spots on long tables, but one set of itty bitty salt and pepper shakers just isn’t practical. I do love the idea of having a love themed serving/home item, but I think there were much better choices.

Shower Mochi
Sugar Scrub Shower Mochi
from Slightly Melted
(suggested retail: $3.90)
Description: These sugar scrubs will leave your skin feeling soft and renewed! We absolutely adore the Orange Dreamsicle and Cotton Candy scents.”
Verdict: Love!
Included with this was coupon code for 25% off at the Slightly Melted Etsy shop, use code sweetpeaches25 for 25% off. These smell amazing and I love that we’re getting introduced to a new brand. The Slightly Melted shop specializes in luxurious handmade sugar scrubs as well as salt scrubs, bubble bars and body balms and this is hands down my favorite item in the box.

Lip Smackers
Yummy Lip Balm or Gloss
(suggested retail: $5.76)
Description: Treat your lips to a delicious flavored balm/gloss to keep them kissable and smooth!
Verdict: Like/Gift
How did they know Samoas are my favorite Girl Scout cookie? In the interest of my sanity and ever growing lip product collection, I’ll be giving this one to my niece (who happens to actually be a Girl Scout). I had trouble finding this exact version (it seems to mostly be included in sets) so I found a different flavor and based the retail on that.

Canvas
Sweet Surprise!

Description: This special item will vary from box to box. A great way to “share the Love” and show off the special item you received.
Verdict: Miss
This is a freebie so it’s less disappointing that it feels a bit juvenile and dollar-store-esque. If the coloring of it were a bit less drab it might be a bit more appealing. I’ll be giving this to that same Girl Scout niece to either use for decoration or reuse the canvas for her art projects.

OVERALL
Peaches & Petals February 2016
Verdict:
Like!
So to start, I thought the “sweet” theme of the box was seasonally appropriate and I thought each item fit in very well. I received this box for free, but it retails for $19.99. Now the canvas was a freebie and I couldn’t find a cost for the pillow cover. Excluding those items, my total already comes out to $20.65. I’d say the pillow cover was worth at least $10, so the value of the box has well exceeded what we paid, so it’s thumbs up on that area.

Now to the actual items – I thought there was a lot creativity in the curation, but I think there’s room for improvement in the execution. I loved the sugar scrubs from the Etsy company and I’d love to see the box have more items like them. We can grab items from Target ourselves, but we might not be familiar with all the great products from smaller companies. I appreciated the focus on home décor items, but I’d like to see a more practical spin on them. If I were in charge I would have swapped out the shakers and the pillow for a set of cloth napkins with a similar design. Ideally, I’d  like the candle and lip product to come from Etsy sellers instead.

Even with some of the minor problems, I thought this was a solid box and one of the few companies that really works hard at sticking to a theme.

MARCH THEME SPOILER!
For March, the theme is #livelifeincolor. That’s a very broad area so it should be exciting to see what we get. Makeup? Art?
