June Product Review: Grace & Stella Co. Luxurious Foot Peeling Mask & 60% Off Coupon

So the lovely folks at Grace & Stella Co. sent me a Luxurious Foot Peeling Mask to review along with a special link which gets you get 60% off full price.) Grace & Stella also offer a subscription service where you can opt for them to send you a foot peeling mask at specific intervals for a discounted price.

First,  we should find out exactly what this “foot peeling mask” entails.

“Grace & Stella’s Foot Peeling Mask is designed to remove the unsightly, dead skin cells on your feet that build up over time and can contribute to numerous problems associated with the soles of your feet. In many cases, feet become cracked and painful from the accumulation of dead skin….Our scientifically formulated product contains 17 types of natural extracts which exfoliate and moisturize at the same time. The principal ingredient of our Foot Peeling Mask is fruit acid which is very gentle, when compared with other acids. The fruit acid penetrates into the layers of dead skin cells and breaks down the desmosomes which hold the layers together. By this process, skin is undamaged but peels easily away from the fresh layer beneath. After peeling, your feet are reborn just like a baby’s foot, giving you healthy, beautiful feet.”

I’m not sure I want to have a “baby’s foot” but the rest sounds fabulous. My feet get a bit worse for wear during the summer when I’m constantly in flip flops and sandals so I was excited to try this out.
Peeling Mask

So first I washed and dried my feet, then put them inside the plastic booties that came in the package. The product inside felt cool and pretty pleasant. I was worried something called a “peel” would feel harsh or uncomfortable but it was just fine. I left the booties on for an hour. I removed them, washed my feet with soap and cold water and then examined them. They definitely felt softer than when I started. I have sensitive skin and was not irritated at all by the foot peel.  The instructions stated that I’d see dead skin cells continue to peel from 5 to 7 days and could possibly continue to peel for up to two weeks. I definitely noticed more dead skin coming off during the week after.  My feet aren’t weren’t in horrific shape to start with but they definitely improved after the peel.

Verdict: Like at Full Price; Hit with Discount!

Overall, the foot peel did help my feet quite a bit with no irritation to my skin, so I feel like the package delivered on its promise. The only thing that makes this a “like” instead of a “hit” is that the regular cost of this foot peel is $24.95 which is for me quite high. My feet aren’t in horrific shape so I probably wouldn’t be willing to pay that much for one mask unless it was a very special occasion. However, if you follow this link you can get the foot peeling masks for just $9.95. At that price point these are a total hit and I recommend them. You can also get a discount on the price by signing up for Grace & Stella Co’s subscription service.

Do you have trouble with cracked and dry feet? If so, would you be interested in a foot peeling mask?

April Product Review: Memebox NYLON #ItGirlPalette “Sweet 16” & Coupon Codes!

So April’s product review is a special palette from Memebox. Once known for their Korean beauty boxes, Memebox has now made a big push into creating their own makeup line. For lots (and lots!) of coupon codes (including $4.00 off this palette), jump down below. Now on to the main event!
Box

Memebox graciously sent me their “Sweet 16”, Nylon #ItGirlPalette, designed by Nylon and created by Memebox. This palette retails for $29.00 and Memebox describes it on the site as follows:
“#ItGirlPalette is NYLON’s special gift to its readers in celebration of their 16th anniversary. All colors were carefully picked by NYLON’s senior beauty editors with a strong emphasis on versatility and uniqueness. Each color packs a punch so you can amp up the night with just one shade, or blend your favorites to create a custom look! This palette is a must-have for all gals that are edgy, trend-setting, and f***ing awesome. Cruelty Free.”

I kind of appreciate the nod to profanity. Sometimes you don’t want to be a princess, sometimes you just want to be a bitch in heels.

For folks that don’t know, Nylon is a beauty, fashion and pop culture magazine.  The “Sweet 16” moniker is in tribute to Nylon’s 16th anniversary and the shades relate to the magazine and are inspired by their most iconic cover stars.
Palette & Box Brush

Memebox automatically gets points added for the plastic packaging. So many palettes come in cardboard and even if you’re careful they end up looking dingy in no time. The dual sided brush is also nice quality and can give a decent application, although I prefer to use my makeup brushes.

Palette Close
The Moment: A Champagne Pink that can be used as a killer face illuminator or brow highlight
Lilo: A Matte White
Mary Kate: A Sparkly Olive
Mischa: A Grungy Rust
Lana: An Antique Gold
Paris: An Expensive Hazel
Nicole: A multi-dimensional blue-hued brown
Sweet 16: (blush) Memebox & Nylon’s signature matte hot pink

Verdict: Love!

At first glance I was worried these colors would look terrible on, but they don’t. Typically makeup leans a bit too warm or yellow for my cool, pale, pink undertoned complexion but these didn’t. Shades like the gold, definitely leaned a touch warm, but nothing that I couldn’t pull off. These colors are pretty neutral so whether you’re warm or cool, yellow or pink, you should be able to rock them.

Swatch Moment & Sweet 16
“The Moment” is super sparkly so I’d reserve it for evenings. The “Sweet 16” blush has amazing color payoff, but I’m not sure that I can pull it off with my complexion. I’ll have to play around with it.
Swatches
These eyeshadows went on smoothly and had decent staying power (even on my super oily lids). The best thing about this palette is how unique the colors. They are both intriguing and edgy and can work in a variety of looks. You could use Nicole for an evening metallic smoky eye with Mischa has an unexpected pop of color or Lana with a gorgeous cat eye liner for some old Hollywood flair, or try Paris for a romantic daytime look. I have quite a bit of makeup and these colors aren’t like anything else in my makeup kit. I’m going to have a ton of fun experimenting with them.

This palette retails for $29.00 which I think is a fair price. A lot of similarly priced palettes come in cardboard and with colors that aren’t half as interesting. If you want something unique for your makeup kit, definitely give this palette a shot.

MARCH PRODUCT REVIEW: Ottilie & Lulu Naturals for Tweens

I’m sneaking in yet another product review for March. (I told you I’d been stockpiling these). This one is a little different since it’s skincare specially formulated for “tweens”. I don’t normally review kid stuff since I don’t have any of my own, but I do have a ton of children to shop for and I thought this might be a great item to get for that 11/12 year old girl that is too old for Barbies but too young for makeup. The gracious folks at Ottilie & Lulu sent me an assortment of their natural skincare line to review.

So first a little about this company:

“Tween skin is delicate, unique and in a state of constant change. Having a daily skin care regime is essential to keeping skin clear and healthy. Using harsh ingredients found in teen and adult products can damage tween skin, and 80% of the damage done to skin happens before the age of 17. O&L products are specially formulated just for tween skin. Our gentle and effective formulas are filled with anti-oxidants, botanicals, and vitamins – exactly what tween skin needs. Dermatologist and allergy tested — but not on animals. Start using Ottilie & Lulu today and show off your natural beauty.”

 Wipes
Ottilie & Lulu, Clean Skin Face Wipes, 30 Wipes
(Retail: $7.90)
Description: “Ottilie & Lulu Gentle Cleansing Wipes with soothing rosewater scent are great for on-the-go cleansing. Use these pre-moistened 100% cotton wipes to refresh and cleanse throughout the day. Feeling clean and fresh has never been so easy. Gentle cleansing eliminates oil and dirt leaving skin feeling soft, clean and smooth.”
Verdict: Hit!
And how cute are the little girls on the label? I’m assuming they are Otillie and Lulu and they have lots of adventures. (The children’s book writer in me is emerging). These face wipes had a nice fresh scent unlike so many other brands that reek of alcohol. I think face wipes are a great idea for kids, particularly when traveling to the eleventybillion activities kids have (like soccer games, girl scout trips and dance competitions.)  Some kids also don’t like getting bogged down in a long bed time routine and these are a quick and convenient way for them to clean their face.

Cleanser
Ottilie & Lulu, Morning & Night Gel Cleanser, Soothing Mandarin Sandalwood Scent, 4 fl oz (118 ml)

(Retail: $7.90)
Description: “Specially formulated for all skin types, our all-natural Morning & Night Gel Cleanser leaves skin feeling soft, smooth, and clean. A unique infusion of soothing Organic Aloe Vera Juice, purifying Witch Hazel Extract, and refreshing Mandarin Essential Oil helps keep skin purified and glowing..”
Verdict: Like
A lot of kids products have super synthetic scents but this one felt very spa like. I also think kids will enjoy the gel consistency.

Moisturizer
Ottilie & Lulu, Morning Pure Facial Moisturizer, Southing Mandarin Sandalwood Scent, 3 fl oz (88 ml)
(Retail:$12.90)
Description: Specially formulated for all skin types, our all-natural Morning Pure Facial Moisturizer provides gentle, effective care for dry, chapped skin. A unique infusion of hydrating Organic Shea Butter, calming Calendula Extract, and refreshing mandarin essential oil leaves skin feeling silky soft and smooth, not sticky.”
Verdict: Like, if used with sunblock
I’m not sure it’s really all that logical to have a morning moisturizer for kids and then an additional sunscreen. I feel like for this age group, less steps are better so I’d love to see the moisturizer have SPF included. This does have a nice scent and is a lighter moisturizer which is appropriate for the age bracket we are looking at.

Sunblock
Ottilie & Lulu, Everyday Facial Moisturizer & Sunscreen, SPF 20, Fresh Scent, 2.5 fl oz (75 ml)

(Retail:$16.90)
Description: ” Provides full spectrum protection against UVA (cause of skin cancer and aging) and UVB (sunburn) rays. Recommended for all skin types. Anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties (green tea, algae, and vitamin E) guard against free radical damage.”
Verdict: On the Fence
I guess my wish was granted since this is both a moisturizer and sunscreen.  I love the fact that this is a moisturizing sunscreen with a lovely scent with natural ingredients. The part that leaves me wanting is the SPF level. I think SPF 20 is too low for kids, hell SPF 20 is too low for adults. I think you’d have to use this in conjunction with a higher level sunscreen. It’s a great idea to get kids in a habit of using a sunblock and even better when they include natural products, so hopefully Otillie & Lulu will start offering some in SPF 35 or SPF 50.

Blemish
Ottilie & Lulu, Spot Blemish Treatment, Soothing Mandarin Sandalwood Scent, 2 fl oz (60 ml)

(Retail:$12.90)
Description: ” This oil-free formula helps diminish the appearance of blemishes. A powerhouse extract blend of White Willow Bark, Peppermint Leaf, and Tea Tree Leaf naturally calms skin and provides relief from breakouts. Tea Tree Oil and Peppermint Oil help reduce redness..”
Verdict: Like
This is the biggest tube of blemish treatment I have ever seen. Seriously, Ottilie & Lulu are totally giving you your money’s worth here. Tweens are right on the cusp of becoming hormonal teenagers and I imagine those that get blemishes can feel really self-conscious. You wouldn’t want to give them a harsh acne fighting product so this is a really nice alternative to help them with skin issues.

Verdict:
Like!

These products all have nice scents and natural ingredients, and I feel like parents could feel secure that they are giving their kids products that are safe for their skin. These could also be a great gift for those impossible-to-shop-for tween girls in your life. The only reason I didn’t give this review a “hit” was just because of the low SPF, otherwise I think this is a unique, fun line and the price is quite affordable for the amount of product you receive.

Do you have any “tweens” in your life that would enjoy this type of skincare?

March Product Review: Benefit Roller Lash

So I told you I had lots of product reviews just waiting for you, so don’t be too surprised that you’re getting another product review for March. If you’re even remotely interested in beauty buzz you’ve probably heard about Benefit’s Roller Lash. Benefit has been hyping this product everywhere with the fancy pants claims about it’s special design that will give your lashes tons of curls.

“The mascara’s innovative Hook ‘n’ Roll™ brush is coated in tiny, soft hooks, which catch onto and lift, curl, and separate each lash instantly. The brush is universal and works with any eye shape or size and varying lash types (it works especially well with short or straight lashes that won’t usually hold a curl). The mascara itself is inky black with a satiny finish, doesn’t smudge or flake, and contains provitamin B5 for lash-conditioning benefits. The result is a dramatic (but not overdone) look that lasts for up to 12 hours. Plus, it’s easy to remove!”

Now I love Benefit and have great experience with the Benefit They’re Real! Mascara , so when HSN sent me a $10 off coupon, I figured I’d use it to gamble on this new product. With free shipping I was able to snag one for $14.00.

Box
I read the directions and Benefit asks you to put the roller at the base of your lashes, wiggle it and then roll it up. Since this has been my technique for all my mascara application since high school, I figured I’d have a good handle on it.
Brush

So how did it measure up?
Tube
Verdict:
Don’t throw away your eyelash curler just yet

So I found that this mascara did absolutely nothing in terms of curling my lashes. The formula was thin and gave that spiderlash look that I loathe. I tried it several times and even used it layered but I still really disliked it. In terms of brush design alone, I find the Mirenesse iCurl Secret Weapon 24 Hour Mascara to be far superior for curling lashes. I loved the curl it gave mine, but unfortunately their formula flakes on me. However, if you don’t have oily lashes like I do, it would probably work great for you. My overall pick for best mascara is It Cosmetic’s Hello Lashes Clinically Proven 5-in-1 Mascara. This formula not only curls your lashes, but thickens them as well and doesn’t budge at all on me. The little ball at the end helps you go back in and get any small lashes you may have missed. I’ve tried a lot of mascaras and it’s still my top pick.

I know a lot of ladies are raving about this mascara so part of it may just be body chemistry, but I’d urge you to find a sample to try first before committing to a full size. Thankfully I only paid $14.00 for this, but for $24.00 it’s really not worth the price.

Have you tried Benefit’s Roller Lash  yet?
If so, was it everything you’d hoped or just a big old disappointment?

March Product Review: Memebox SoothingSista Eyeshadow Quad & Coupon Codes!

It’s been awhile since I’ve done a product review, but it’s because I’ve been amassing a nice stockpile so prepare yourselves to see a bunch of them for Spring (blessed, wondrous, oh so longed for Spring). I’m kicking off my 2015 product reviews with a little something from Memebox. Typically I review Memebox’s Korean beauty boxes, but they’ve really made a push into creating their own makeup line and they sent me the SoothingSista Eyeshadow Quad to review for you all.
Box

This paraben free/cruelty free palette retails on Memebox for $17.00. “Stephanie Villa AKA SOOTHINGSISTA has created 4 rosy brown shades to be worn day or night for irresistible eyes! Each shade has a smooth finish with double-coated pigment technology for long lasting color.”
Box 2
Who is Stephanie Villa aka Soothingsista?

SOOTHINGSISTA AKA Stephanie Villa is taking the YouTube world by storm with her makeup, skincare and fashion tutorials. Stephanie empowers you to be a goddess, harnessing inner and outer beauty to be the best version of yourself.”

Stephanie sounds way cool, since I totes believe my best self is an empowered goddess. Also, she has kick ass eyebrows. I’m going to need to spend some time studying her ways. You can check out her tutorial about using this palette on YouTube.

I appreciate the plastic packaging since cardboard palettes get destroyed in a short time.
Palette
Stephanie named the different shades in this palette after her favorite places in San Francisco.

Closeup Names
Sutro:
Light Dusty Rose Matte
Valencia: Medium pinky-brown matte
Candy Rain: Metallic Rose Shimmer with silver microglitter
Bay Area: Metallic Pink shimmer with iridescent glitter
Palette Colors Swatches

The colors go on smoothly but Sutro isn’t as pigmented as I would like. The Bay area is quite glittery and I’d probably use it more for evening than daytime. It’s hard to see in these photos but these rosy nude shades lean just a touch on the warm side for my cool undertones and the result is that the colors end up looking  a bit muddy. They were still wearable but they lost that pink/rose feel that made them so pretty in the palette.  A huge positive for these shadows was their staying power.  I have super oily lids and even with a hardcore eye primer most of my eye makeup is gone or all over my face by the end of the day. These shades were still on my lid and going strong long after I’d gotten home from work.

Overall
Palette Full
Verdict:
Like

If these shades were a cooler pink then this would be a love. Unfortunately I just don’t think they are the best match for my complexion.  If you have warmer or more neutral undertones to your skin I think you could rock these shades, (particularly if you want to go for a romantic look.) Overall, rose browns can offer a lot of versatility and I recommend that everyone keep a few shades in their makeup arsenal.

NOVEMBER PRODUCT REVIEW: Emtage Hair & Beauty

For November, the lovely folks at Emtage sent me a selection of really intriguing products to review. They are a natural beauty brand with products that feature botanical oils.

So first a little about this company:

“Emtage Beauty is born out of genuine passion and commitment for providing pure, premium, natural, multi-use products that are healthy for the body and the planet. We are committed to a lifestyle that focuses on the holistic approach of beauty, from the inside out. Our mission is to use only the purest, highest-quality ingredients that are fairly traded, sustainable and ethnically sourced that are effective and benefit the health of the skin, hair and scalp. We support fair trade women co-ops throughout the world, support human rights and are against the use of child labor and animal testing.”

Emtage has an extensive list of all the natural ingredients they use including things like Certified Argan Oil, Certified Sea Buckthorn oil and Mango Butter.

This seems like a super health conscious line and I’m interested to see how the products work.

Moisturizer
Emtage Island Beauty Balm, 2 oz
(2 Oz Retail: $18.40)
Description: “An exotic blend of organic oils, fruit extracts and butters to nourish, inspired from the Tropics where women are known for their beautiful skin. This multi-use cream moisturizes, nourishes, hydrates and protect face and body. Apply to face, lips, hands, feet, stretch marks, anywhere care is needed. Use a small amount on face as your daily moisturizer, makeup remover and night cream.”
Verdict: Like
This is thicker balm so it’s not something I would use on my face during the day. It is rich and hydrating so I think it’s great for those rough areas on the body that need extra hydration (like elbows, heels, and hands). I also could see using this on your face as a night treatment during the winter months when your skin might be feeling raw. This product didn’t have much of a scent and definitely had a natural feel.

Scalp
Emtage SILKtage Scalp Repair, Pre-Wash Healing Oil Treatment

(2 Oz Retail: $17.00)
Description: “An infusion of nature’s most healing organic botanical oils from around the world. This multi-purpose oil treatment nourishes the scalp, soothe itchness, dryness, eczema, psoriasis, relieve dandruff, strengthen roots and follicles and stimulate.”
Verdict: Like
I get a super dry scalp (especially in winter) which often results in that oh so fun problem of itchy scalp and oily roots. This is a treatment that you apply to your scalp and then leave on for a few hours (or overnight) and then wash off. I felt like this moisturized my scalp but it also made my hair super greasy while I waited for it to do its thing. So if you try this out just make sure you have some time to let it work before having to look presentable.

Styling Serum
Emtage Silktáge™ Rejuvenating Styling Serum
(1 oz Retail:$15.20)
Description: An infusion of nature’s most exotic organic botanical oils from around the world. This multi-purpose hair oil serum is nourishing to every hair type and especially beneficial to dry, stressed, frizzy hair—strengthening hair from the root and restoring moisture lost from styling heat, chemicals, and the environment..”
Verdict: Miss for Wavy Hair, Hit for Straight Hair
So hair oils are super trendy and I’m always up for trying a new one. I have thicker, wavy hair that is prone to frizziness. I tried a bit of this and let it air dry and while it made my hair shiny and helped the frizz, it sort of weighed down the waves and made them odd. It is much better suited for applying to wet hair, then blow drying.  I’m going to set this one aside for my blowout or flat iron days.

Cleansing Oil
Emtage Clear Glow™ – Camellia Cleansing Oil

(4 Oz Retail:$26.00)
Description: ”An infusion of nature’s most luxurious organic botanical oils from around the world. This all-natural cleansing solution combines the ancient beauty secret of Camellia with Olive and Red Palm to calm redness, diminish pores and blackheads, rejuvenate your skin and restore your natural glow. This multi-purpose cleansing oil treatment removes makeup, dirt and impurities and leaves your skin soft and clear while treating your skin and delicate eye area with age-defying antioxidants.
Verdict: Like
Oil cleansers are my absolute favorite type. I gave this one a “like” rating because I found it to easily break down make up and to go on smoothly. This is a natural product and has a nutty (almost cooking oil) type scent which just isn’t my favorite. It’s not overly obtrusive but I prefer a fresher scent in my cleansers, which is the only reason I didn’t give this one a “love”.

I saved my favorite items for last:

 Argan Oil
Emtage Argan Oil Rollerball
(.36 fl oz Retail:$12.99)
Description: “Rich, nourishing Argan oil provides instant hydration and age-defying benefits to nourish skin, soften cuticles and treat split ends. This precious, time proven oil in a rollerball form allows you to target and rejuvenate problem areas with powerful antioxidants, Vitamin E and essential fatty acids for a healthy and radiant glow that’s always with you.”

Argan Rosehip
Emtage Argan Oil Rosehip Rollerball

(.36 fl oz Retail:$14.99)
Description: “Rich, nourishing, luxurious blend of Argan oil and Rose hip oil infused with Geranium essential oil provides instant hydration and age defying benefits to dehydrated, dry skin, wrinkles, fine lines and discoloration. These precious, time proven oils in a rollerball form allow you to target and rejuvenate problem areas with powerful antioxidants, vitamin E, C and essential fatty acids to restore skin’s radiance and youthful glow.”

Verdict: Love!
Oils are great but applying them can be an arduous process. Pure Argan Oil can also be quite pricey. These adorable rollerballs have taken all the annoyance and expense out of using Argan oil. They have a metal rollerball that makes them fabulous for using on the undereye area. It gives a nice cooling effect that feels fabulous when your eyes are tired. These are also safe to use on your lips. I’ve been using the rosehip under my eyes and on my giant forehead wrinkle and I do feel like it’s made a bit of difference. The argan oil roller is perfect on my lips. These go on smoothly and are not sticky at all. Out of all the products I received, these are the rockstars.

OVERALL

Hit!

All these products were of good quality and felt super natural. A lot of the items had multiple applications which helps you get more bang for your buck. I really loved the Argan oil rollerballs so that put this collection firmly in the “hit” category for me.  The packaging on them is wonderful and it’s a inexpensive way to incorporate Argan oil into your beauty regimen.

Do you currently use Argan Oil? If so, do you notice a difference in your beauty routine?

The October Product Review That Wasn’t: A Tale of Lost Love & QVC

Once upon a time there was a fashion and beauty blogger who loved It Cosmetics.  One day, QVC sent her an email about an advance order for the 5 piece It Cosmetics Holiday kit with two brand new products that were exclusive to QVC until 2015.  Our blogger immediately thought, “This is perfect for my October product review!   And this is the perfect birthday treat for myself.  Plus I can use it on my upcoming mini vacation!  This is all so perfect!”

A long, long work week goes by.  It’s Friday, almost 8 PM when our blogger arrives home.  It’s been about a 2 and a hour round trip commute and a long week of working in a dungeon basement filling out government forms and doing word problems.  She eyes the QVC delivery box in the vestibule of her apartment.  A smile crosses her lips, but then she realizes it’s the wrong shape.  From the pictures online the kit is a square gift box and this is a rectangle.  “Maybe I’m wrong,” she thinks.  “Maybe they package it differently when they send it.”

So she opens the box and instead of this lovely kit:
It Cosmetics
.30-oz Celebration Foundation Illumination in Fair, Light, Medium, Tan, or Rich
0.33-fl oz Hello Lashes! Extensions Mascara in Black
0.17-oz No Tug Waterproof Gel Eyeliner in Black/Brown
0.38-oz CC+ Radiance Ombre Blush in Je Ne Sais Quoi, a soft pink shade
Heavenly Luxe Double Airbrush Foundation Brush
Hello Lashes! Extensions Mascara and CC+ Radiance Ombre Blush are exclusive to QVC until 12/31/14

She receives this:
Wen
A gasp emerges from her lips.  “It cannot be!  Not Wen!  Anything but Wen!”
You see of all the beauty products in the whole wide world, Wen was the one she despised the most.  She’d tried the fig version long long ago and it had not only made her long hair smell like rotten bananas, but had ruined the texture so much she opted to chop it all off and start over.  Encased in this wrong size box was 32 oz of liquid mockery.  It seemed that Wen had managed to win yet another battle in their beauty war.

Cue a frantic call to QVC’s customer service.  Our blogger spent approximately 5 minutes trying to navigate their recorded menu which sadly did not offer a :”You sent me the most horrible thing ever instead of what I ordered” option.  Eventually she gives up and just starts pushing the operator button over and over.  Approximately 10 minutes after that she gets connected to Richard in customer service. With disinterest, he tells her that the kit is now “sold out” and then proceeds to tell her how to return the evil Wen conditioner.   She is understandably upset, but keeps it together until she asks about her refund.  Then the knave Richard, states that she won’t get a refund until they receive the Wen.  You know that awful product that she hates and  never ordered! She now has to go to the post office/UPS and wait for it to be returned and processed before they will give her a refund.  What evil magic is this?  They were holding her hard earned basement money hostage until she fixed their terrible mistake.  She requested to speak to a supervisor but none were available.

Now our blogger is angry.  She hangs up with QVC and proceeds to go to social media to unearth this treachery.   She posts on the QVC page about her disappointment and quickly gets a response from the conscientious social media team member, Beth.  She asks the blogger to email her with details on the problem.  The blogger does and receives a response from the lovely Brittany.  Brittany apologizes and reiterates the unfortunate news that there is no more stock of this kit.  It seems our story has had a tragic ending and our blogger has lost her beloved It Cosmetics kit.  Brittany lightens this cutting blow by stating that the blogger’s money has been refunded, that she doesn’t need to return the Wen conditioner and that she’s been given a $25.00 store credit that she can perhaps use toward a different product to review.

So folks as you can guess, I am that blogger.  And sadly, you are the guys who won’t get a review of what looked like an awesome kit.

I am torn on my feelings about this particular incident.   It seems to encompass both the best and worst customer service. I appreciate how quickly and thoroughly the customer service team kicked in after my post on their Facebook page.  But, I can’t forget how useless and unapologetic their original customer service was.  Customers shouldn’t have to go to social media to get their problems addressed.  This wasn’t just an average QVC order – it was an advance order that included products exclusive to QVC, and from some comments on social media it seems a few other unlucky customers had the same issue I did.  I would have gladly emailed photos if they needed proof of the mixup before they could issue my refund.

I have the Wen product all packaged up so I may still return it depending upon whether I can get to a post office/UPS before they close and whether I can think of someone who really loves the stuff.

Hopefully QVC will offer another It Cosmetics kit with these exclusive items and then I can nab it and review it for you guys..

Would you have been upset at being asked to return an unordered product before receiving your refund, or do you think it’s par for the course with online ordering?

September Product Review: bee naturals

My product review for September features a variety of skincare and beauty products generously sent to me by bee naturals.

“bee naturals is committed to formulating and producing skin and body care products that have a specific therapeutic purpose and are made with the highest quality all natural ingredients that promote healthy skin and body for overall well being.  At bee naturals….We combine the best that nature and science have to offer to create luxurious, naturally derived products for the body and home. bee naturals’ goal is to provide luxurious, premium quality products using the purest natural ingredients, formulated utilizing small batch techniques to create a product designed to help heal, normalize and maintain healthy beautiful skin.”

I love the idea that these beauty products have a therapeutic focus along with natural ingredients. I also think there is something extra special about beauty products made in small batches.

OilCuticle and Nail Oil
(0.5 Oz Retail: $7.44)
Description: “Smooth cuticles and strong, healthy nails are just a brush away. Lemon and lavender make nail care smell heavenly, and tea tree oil helps prevent fungal infections from acrylic nail overlays..”
Verdict: Love!
I’m going to make a confession. My nail polish tends to peel off in really big chunks. So once I have a big chunk missing, I can’t help myself and I just keep peeling the rest off. This means my nails can get into pretty bad shape. This nail and cuticle oil is perfect when my nails start peeling and the brush applicator makes it easy to apply.

PowderQueen Bee Facial Polish
(2 Oz Retail: $7.28)
Description: “Treat yourself like royalty with Bee Naturals Queen Bee Facial Polish. Our delicate mixture of oatmeal, lavender, and gentle exfoliating clays will brighten your complexion each day.”
Verdict: Hit!
This is a powder that you add to your favorite cleanser to turn into an exfoliator. I thought this was a great product since you can customize it to work with things you already love. Their descriptor of it being delicate is accurate. This is a more gentle scrub that I believe would work well for the folks with delicate skin.

Eye Balm
Queen Bee, Peeper Keeper Eye Balm
(.8 oz Retail:$7.28)
Description: Treat yourself like royalty with Queen Bee Peeper Keeper Eye Balm. Keep dry skin and wrinkles at bay with our all natural ingredients..”
Verdict: Like
This was a really interesting product. It’s a very hard moisturizing balm that you just run your fingers over and then use as an eye moisturizer. It reminded me of the moisturizing part of Benefit’s “Fake up” stick. And if this item had a stick like applicator I would have given it a love.  In it’s current formulation, it’s a little difficult to apply, but I found it great to use beneath my morning makeup to keep my under eye area from getting dry. For night I’d probably use something a bit richer.  My eyes tend to be a sensitive area for me and this product produced no irritation.

Facial NectarQueen Bee Facial Nectar
(2 Oz Retail:$9.28)
Description: Treat yourself like royalty with Bee Naturals Queen Bee Face Creme. Enjoy soft, nourished skin all year round with our all-natural ingredients.”
Verdict: Like
This is a really light moisturizer that’s a bit on the liquid side. It goes on smoothly and I found the product to be very gentle. This isn’t super rich or heavy so I think it would work well with a variety of skin types. The scent was unobtrusive and I liked the pump style applicator.

Also included were 3 lipsticks in some really fun shades.
bee naturals Luxury Lipsticks

Swatches

Cherry
Cherry No. 3
(Retail:$21.60)
Description: “Cherry #3 is a clear, semi-sheer, low-luster red with moderate gloss. This bright, buildable shade looks best on either fair complexions with blonde hair or on brunettes with deep skin tone. Creamy texture. Neutral.”
Verdict: Hit!
What about redheads? We look pretty damn good with a classic red lip (if I do say so myself). This shade a vintage red sort of vibe that I thought went well with my pale complexion. I paired it with minimal eyeshadow and a winged liner for a retro vibe. The description on this lipstick is on pointe. This is a semi sheer so you can build it to the level of color you prefer. It also had excellent staying power. The only downside was that I found this shade to be a bit drying. The color was lovely, but I’d wear a clear balm beneath it for a bit of extra moisture.

Fig
Fig No. 3
(Retail:$21.60)
Description: “Fig #2 is a tawny, rosy umber shade with moderate-high luster and low-moderate gloss that is beautiful on a wide range of complexions ranging from warm to cool. Buildable color ranges from sheer to medium opacity. Creamy texture. Neutral.”
Verdict: Like
This was a great every day sort of shade and went on creamier and less sheer than the other shades. It also felt more moisturizing on the lip than the cherry color. It had good staying power and I thought this shade would complement many skin tones.

ChasteChaste No. 5
(Retail:$21.60)
Description:Chaste (berry) #5 is technically a nude, but oh so much more lovely; the color of newborn baby lips.  This color is beautiful on everyone and is perfect when you need just a hint of color.  A very sheer nude-pink without luster and low-moderate gloss. Softly buildable, low opacity and creamy texture.  Neutral.”
Verdict: Like
This shade was similar to the Fig in it’s creamy texture and level of moisture, but I found it to be much more sheer. This is a super natural color that you can build up and is the perfect option for the girl who doesn’t like to wear much makeup or wants to keep things looking natural. I think this color would work best for ladies with fair complexions.

OVERALL
All Products

I really enjoyed trying out this natural line.   From the more straight forward products like the Cuticle and Nail oil to the more unique like the Eye balm, I found all the items to be of excellent quality. The skincare in particular is a great value and for what you’d pay at a drugstore for mass-marketed products you can grab some all natural items. If you’re looking for one product to start with, the facial polish is a great option since you can easily incorporate it into your regular skincare routine.

My personal favorites were the lipsticks and found all the shades to be flattering for me. I also love that I now have a couple handcrafted lipsticks in my beauty collection!

What’s your take on handcrafted lipsticks? Intriguing or unnecessary?

AUGUST PRODUCT REVIEW: Honey Girl Organics

So I’m just sneaking in my August product review. I like to hold these until the end of the month, so I have lots of time to try out the products. This month I have some skincare from Honey Girl Organics. (Isn’t that an incredibly adorable name? It totally sounds like a Japanese anime character). The Honey Girl folks were super gracious and sent me a sample of products to share with you guys.

So First let’s start with a little background on Honey Girl:

Honey Girl produces Certified Organic skin care products in Hawaii. They describe them as “Completely natural skincare made with nature’s best organic ingredients including honey, olive oil, beeswax, and propolis.” They also state that “…We collect these ingredients from our hives located in forested areas on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii , from our holistically managed hives..”

Foraged in Hawaii from holistically managed hives? Sounds awesome, sign me up for a jar of that.

Face & Eye
Face & Eye Créme
(1.75 fl. Oz Retail: $29.44)
Description: “This luxurious emollient will soften, moisturize and repair your skin, reducing fine lines while providing protection from the harsh elements. It hydrates and nourishes to bring out your natural radiance. This crème is extremely beneficial and gentle enough to use on the delicate tissue around the eyes.”
Verdict: Like
This product is super moisturizing and quite rich. Because it’s natural, once you open it, there tends to be a little bit of oil that’s separated at the top. A quick stir and the cream is perfectly fine. This is definitely a product more geared toward those with dry skin, or for use during the colder seasons. If you have oily skin, I’d say you should probably skip this one. The scent is slightly herbal, but not particularly strong or distracting. I found this to be super gentle around my eyes (which can be a problem area for me). The packaging is quite attractive and a little of this product goes a long way. If you have dry, sensitive skin this might be the perfect product for you. (Honey Girl also has an extra sensitive version of this product as well.)

Polish
Facial Scrub
(1.75 fl. Oz Retail: $24.69)
Description: “HGO Facial Scrub whisks away dead skin cells and increases blood circulation, helping to diminish fine lines, revealing plumper, younger skin and leaving it silky smooth.”.”
Verdict: Like
Of course at first glance I adored the itty bitty metal jar. I’m a sucker for tiny packaging. Once I got into it, the facial scrub had a really unique consistency, almost like a rubbery sort of texture. It was really intriguing. I found that this product to be a good exfoliator and quite gentle. Some scrubs can leave your face feeling a little worse for the wear, but this one left my skin soft without any irritation. I think it would work really great on those with sensitive skin. Honey Girl says you can use it once or twice a week.

Mask
Rejuvenating Mask
(1.75 fl. Oz Retail:$25.64)
Description:Enhance collagen production and stimulate new cell growth with HGO’s Rejuvenating Mask. It softens and moisturizes while providing the skin with the nutrition it needs to be the best. Good for all skin types..”
Verdict: Miss
Unfortunately, I’m someone who really doesn’t like sticky masks. I know that honey cleansing is the rage right now, but the consistency of this on my skin just didn’t work for me. While the herbal scent in this product was similar to the one in the cream, it was a bit more overpowering. My skin did feel tighter after using this mask, so it’s really just my preference for the texture of it. If you don’t mind honey type masks, you’ll probably like this one.

Lip Balm
Lip Balm
(.33 fl. oz Retail:$6.36)
Description:A luscious antioxidant lip treatment that soothes dry and chapped lips and protects them from dehydration.”
Verdict: Miss
This balm had a nice citrus taste and scent. Both the texture and wear reminded me of the Eos balms. It’s a harder balm and you just put a thin layer on your lips. The positive is that the balm will last you a long time, the negative is that because it’s a thin layer you’ll have to reapply frequently. I prefer thicker balms (like the Rosebud salve) so this one was a miss for me. It does feel nice on, and I love the scent. Because of the thinner application, I think this balm would be perfect layered beneath matte lipsticks. It won’t interfere with the color, but it will give you some extra moisture  to combat the uber drying characteristics of most matte lip products.

Cuticle Balm
Cuticle & Nail Créme
(.5 fl. oz Retail:$12.82)
Description: “This nourishing crème soothes protects and moisturizes whil providing nutrition for stronger and healthier nails.”
Verdict: Love!
You guys know I have a polish obsession so cuticle crème is right up my alley and I totally fell in love with this one. It is super rich and a little will go a long way. I found it really moisturizes my cuticles and nails and I’ve left the jar on my desk so I can apply frequently. I highly recommend this if you have problems with dry cuticles and peeling nails.

Foot Balm
Foot Balm
(2 fl. oz Retail:$17.49)
Description: “Our rejuvenating and moisturizing Peppermint & Lavender Foot Balm instantly soothes, nourishes, restores and softens your tired and overworked feet. It will also help with dry and cracked skin.”
Verdict: Love!
I love, love, love this product. It does exactly what it says and the peppermint smell is present but not at all overpowering. I tried this cream on my feet and put some socks over it. I checked back in just a half hour and the dry skin on my feet was so much improved. This is my favorite product and the best foot balm I’ve tried.

OVERALL
All Products
Hit!

I really enjoyed trying out this organic line. All of the products were super moisturizing and had that natural feel you expect from organic skin care.  Even the products that I found weren’t the right fit for me, would be great for someone with a different skin type or preference. This line is a great option for those with dry, normal or combination skin as we head into the fall/winter season. If you’re into manis and pedis, I highly recommend grabbing the cuticle and foot balms. You won’t be disappointed.

Do you regularly use organic skincare products? What are your faves?

JULY PRODUCT REVIEW: Earthlab Cosmetics & a GIVEAWAY! – WINNER ANNOUNCED!

In order to celebrate my milestone of surpassing 100 posts and to highlight July’s products from Earthlab Cosmetics, I’m hosting a giveaway! If you’re super impatient, you can jump down the post for all the details, but if you’ve got some time let’s dive into my review.

Let’s start with a little background on Earthlab Cosmetics:

Earthlab Cosmetics was created by a mother and daughter team whose goal was to create a makeup line that worked well for women of all different skin color, tones and types and features the finest natural minerals and raw pigments, derived directly from nature with no additives. Earthlab’s vision is to “have women around the world using a pure makeup that is actually healthy for their skin. One that will not completely absorb into the skin and that is completely free of additives, fillers and preservatives.”
This is a vegan makeup line that does not test on animals and does NOT contain: By-Products, Parabens, Toxic Chemicals,Bismuth Oxychloride,Preservatives.

I’m always intrigued with trying out organic and vegan makeup, but I must confess that I’m not typically a fan of mineral makeup. I find it to be too much effort and a bit too messy for me. Let’s see if this brand changes my mind.

Mascara
Earthlab Cosmetics, Raw Mascara, Black, 0.33 fl oz (10 ml)
(Retail: $18.37)
Description: “…a silky, lash-defining and weightless mascara providing all day colour. The smooth light-as-a-feather base does not clump because of the absence of clay in the superior formula. Which also means no flaking and no smudging. Perhaps best of all is that this botanically-enriched mascara adds a softness to the lashes while this moisturizing formula will condition the lashes at the same time. It also has no harmful preservatives that can irritate the eyes and is paraben free.”
Verdict: Like
I wear contacts and in general it’s hard for me to find mascaras and liners that don’t bother my eyes. Since this is natural it didn’t bug my eyes and it also didn’t flake or smudge. This mascara gives you a very natural, boho chic type of vibe. It’s not going to give you that super thick, heavy lash look, but it’s great when you’re going with a natural beauty feel.

Gloss Gloss Swatch
Earthlab Cosmetics, Lip Gloss, Autumn, 0.25 fl oz (8 ml)

(Retail: $15.00)
Description: “Earthlab’s lip gloss is handcrafted with natural plant products and mineral blends. A base of jojoba and natural waxes yields a wonderful silky texture. Your lips will benefit from this nourishing botanical based formula. The Autumn shade is a beautiful cool shade of light pink and gold tones.”
Verdict: Hit!
When I first glanced at this shade in the tube I was worried it would look terrible on me. But with the cooler skin tone, red hair and brown eyes it was a perfect shade. The consistency was a little odd to me at first since this had a more liquid feel and wasn’t quite as sticky as other glosses. I got used to that quickly and found that it had excellent staying power for a gloss.

Mineral Blushes  Blush Swatches
Mineral Blushes
Earthlab Cosmetics, Loose Mineral Blush Shimmer, Sultry Brown, 2 g
(Retail: $19.50)
Description:This deep luscious color is a blend of plum and brown. Perfect for a darker cheek highlight.”

Earthlab Cosmetics, Loose Mineral Blush Shimmer, Apricot, 2 g
(Retail: $19.50)
Description: Highlight the cheeks with this soft Apricot glow, for just a touch of cheek color.”

Earthlab Cosmetics, Loose Mineral Blush Shimmer, Peach, 2 g
(Retail: $19.50)
Description:This peaches and cream shade works well with all skin tones. It’s the perfect shade to achieve a natural daytime look.”
Verdict: Hit!
So I’m usually intimidated by mineral makeup, but I grabbed a big old blush brush and gave this a try. While the sultry brown is far too dark for me, the apricot and peach both looked quite nice. I was very surprised at how easily (and non-fussy) the blush went on. Very easy to apply and the peach and apricot both looked extremely natural on me. (Although the Apricot is my favorite). If you want a really natural cheek, these blushes are perfect.

Eye Bright
Earthlab Cosmetics, Mineral Powder, Eyebright, 1 g
(Full Size Retail: $18.00)
Description:Women of all skin tones and types will benefit from having a brighter eye area when using this product. Use as a base on the lid and under brow. It looks great by itself but even better when other shades are added to the inner and outer edges and along the crease line.”
Verdict: On the Fence
This applied easily but it was a bit shiny for my taste. I layered colors over it but I wasn’t really sure if it made a difference. I’m not quite sure how to use this one so I’m a bit on the fence about it. But maybe folks more experienced with mineral makeup will have a better time with it.

Matte Shadows Matte Shadow Swatches
Matte Mineral Eyeshadows

Earthlab Cosmetics, Matte Shadow Liner, Lavender, 2 g
(Retail: $19.99)
Description: “Earth Lab’s MSLs can be used wet or dry as a matte eye shadow or as an eyeliner.”

Earthlab Cosmetics, Matte Eye Shadow, Deep Plum, 2 g
(Retail: $19.99)
Description: “This soft gorgeous Plum shade is one of our most popular raw pigments. This shade works well in the crease of the eyelid, and looks great paired up with our Bronze shade on the lower lid. It can also be used as a lip tint just top off with clear gloss or make a great fall nail color by mixing with a clear nail polish! Our Multi-purpose colors are unbelievably versatile.”

Earthlab Cosmetics, Matte Eye Shadow, Light Brown, 2 g
(Retail: $19.00)
Description:This Matte Shadow Liner can be used wet or dry as a smokey eye shade or wet with our Accent It brush as a light brown eye liner. This shade also works well dry with our angled brush to define eyebrows for that perfect blended line.”

Verdict: Like
I only tried these out as eyeshadows because I don’t think I’m quite advanced enough with mineral makeup to attempt them as eye liners nor do I need to make my own nail polish. It took me a little while to figure out how much to tap off before application, but the colors went on nicely. They had a pretty, soft focus (almost watercolor) look. The light brown was a touch warm for me. I really like the two purple shades but I need to be careful since purple + my complexion = giant bruise.

Shimmer Mineral Eyeshadows
Shimmer Shadows Shimmer Shadow Swatches
Earthlab Cosmetics, Multi Purpose Mineral Powder/Eye Shadow, Sea Moss, 1 g

(Retail: $18.00)
Description: “A dramatic color to blend with other colors for amazing eye color results..”

Earthlab Cosmetics, Multi Purpose Mineral Powder/Eye Shadow, Plum, 1 g
(Retail: $18.00)
Description: “This soft gorgeous Plum shade is one of our most popular raw pigments. This shade works well in the crease of the eyelid, and looks great paired up with our Bronze shade on the lower lid. It can also be used as a lip tint just top off with clear gloss or make a great fall nail color by mixing with a clear nail polish.”

Earthlab Cosmetics, Multi Purpose Mineral Powder/Eye Shadow, Soft Brown, 1 g
(Retail: $18.00)
Description: “This color can be sheer or dramatic. A Perfect soft brown color for your eyes. Pair it up with our Champagne color on the lower lid for a more dramatic look. This shade is one of our most popular colors.”

Earthlab Cosmetics, Mineral Powder, Autumn, 1 g
(Retail: $18.00)
Description: A very soft pink shimmer. Works well worn alone on the eye or blended with darker shades.”

Earthlab Cosmetics, Multi Purpose Mineral Powder/Eye Shadow, Brown Copper, 1 g
(Retail: $18.00)
Description: This shade is a rich firey shade of copper with just a hint of pinkish/orange..”

Verdict:
Love!
For me, these were the rockstars of the products I tried. These are so pretty going on and I found them to be easier to apply then the matte shades. The shimmer on these is beautiful and the Autumn and Sea Moss look amazing on. The shimmer on these sort of mimics the effect of a smoky eye so you can wear a lot of the shades on their own and still look amazing.

OVERALL

I found this line to be a lot of fun to try out and it definitely helped me get more comfortable with mineral makeup. I think the colors and formulations give a fabulous laid back, boho, California vibe and I think it’s a great option if you are looking for a natural look. None of the eye products irritated me at all and I’m going to keep experimenting with their mineral products. If I had to pick one product for you to try from the ones I reviewed, I’d suggest one of the eye shimmer mineral eyeshadows. They are so lovely and versatile.

Do you swear by mineral cosmetics? Do you find them too messy or intimidating?
