Popsugar: December 2016 Must Have Box + February 2017 Spoilers!

I’m powering through my backlog of boxes with my December 2016 Popsugar Review.  But first I’ve got an awesome spoiler from the February Must Have Box.

Love this clutch!  The print goes with everything and the product supports a worthy cause.
What more could you want?
Except, maybe to see ALL of the February items?  Well head over to my Instagram for a sneak peek at the full box!

Now onto the main event:
open-box open-box-2

Odeme Catchall
& Ring Dish
(Suggested Retail: $67)
Description: “This matching porcelain dish set is the perfect pairing for your vanity, providing a chic vessel for your jewelry and accessories.  For Winter entertaining, you can also try storing drink accessories in the dishes and displaying them on your bar cart.”
Verdict: Love!
I adore home décor items in boxes and this set is incredibly versatile.  I can’t decide if I’m going to use them on my vanity or  in my bathroom, but the simple design will work with a ton of different décor.  A great start!

Baublebar Snowfall Pendant

(Suggested Retail: $28.00)
Description: ”You can’t beat a good statement necklace, especially a versatile one that can be worn over a sweater or used to elevate a party blouse.  This Popsugar-exclusive bauble checks all the boxes; your only dilemma will be deciding whether to layer it or let the necklace stand alone.”
I really love that this is a Popsugar exclusive necklace but the design isn’t wowing me.  I do think it would be a nice piece to wear to work and to layer with other necklaces, so I’m sure it will get some use.  I just wish it was a bit more compelling.

Winky Lux Lip Pill in Bunny

(Suggested Retail: $14.00)
Description: ”’Tis the season for cranberry lip shades, and this festive, pill-shaped lipstick is the ideal hue!  The nondrying matte formula and cruelty-free ingredients make this beauty staple extra special, and its golden tube is merry enough to display on your vanity!”
Verdict: Hit!
Absolutely adorable packaging!  I didn’t swatch this because I’m saving my brand new makeup for when I set up my vanity in my new house.  The color looks lovely and it felt just right for the holidays.  I also love that it’s a matte formula.

Sisters’ Gourmet Baker’s Dozen Classic Chocolate Chip Cookie Mix

(Suggested Retail: $6.99)
Description: ”The mason jar packaging of this cookie mix makes for a handy hostess gift or a quick solution to your last minute entertaining woes.  Fresh-baked goodies are just minutes away – just add eggs and butter, then mix and bake!”
Verdict: On the Fence
I love getting baking mixes in boxes, but the Mason jar packaging made the mix really obnoxious to get out of the jar.  The cookies came out decently, but they weren’t anything too special or surprising.  For $6.99 you could find some better mixes.

Mane Message Date Night Bobby Pins
(Suggested Retail: $10
Description: “Versatile enough to pull bangs out of your face or to jazz up a topknot, these glittery hair pins can be worn individually or all together.  They’re festive enough for New  Year’s Eve parties and beyond!”
Verdict: Love!
I love getting fun hair accessories, because I have long hair and am always looking for a way to keep it out of my face.  These are pretty and easy to incorporate into a lot of hair styles.  The colors in this set should match just about everything in my closet.

Dessange Professional Hair Luxury Color Restore Color Protecting Top Coat Serum
(Suggested Retail: $11.99)
Description: “Give your hair the boost it needs with this serum’s special formula for a smooth shiny look regardless of whether your hair is color treated or not.  Who doesn’t want long-lasting shine that will keep you radiant all day long?”
Verdict: Miss
I don’t color my hair and while it says that you can use it regardless, it seems like it is designed for folks *with* colored hair.  In a world full of hair products I don’t see the point in using ones where the main focus is not something I need.  In any case, I’ll be passing this along to a friend.

Even though not everything was a hit, I thought this box was well curated and seasonably appropriate.  I snagged one of the great promotions that Popsugar had during the holidays, so I was able to prepay 6 months at a huge discount.  This box only cost me $20.46 and had an estimated retail value of $137.98.  Even if I removed the items I wasn’t enthused about, it’s still an awesome haul for a low price tag.

I’ve got lots more Popsugar boxes coming up and if you want sneak previews of the box contents, be sure to follow me on Instagram!

Popsugar: February 2015 & LE Resort Spoiler!

Time to catch up on some of my February boxes and there’s no place better to start than with one of my favorite boxes, Popsugar.  I’ve also got a spoiler on the LE Popsugar box, so let’s get to the goods.
Box Open Box

BlushBlush Swatch
Tarte Cosmetics Amazonian Clay 12 Hour Blush in True Love
(Suggested Retail: $26.00)
Category: Must Have Beauty
Description: “For a healthy-looking flush, Tarte’s 12-hour blush iwill be your one true love. Infused with Amazonian clay, this blush hydrates skin while giving your cheeks a fed-free, flawless tint.”
Verdict: Hit!
Tarte is a great brand and their blushes go on smoothly. I think it’s so perfect that we got the “True Love” shade in a Valentine’s day box. It’s a nod to the holiday in a practical way. This color is a touch bright for me, but with a delicate application it still looks great.

US Apothecary Rose Water Bubble Bath
(Suggested Retail: $30.00)
Category: Must Have Beauty
Description: “After a long day, terat yourself with a relaxing bubble bath and come out smelling like roses. US Apothecary crafted a natural rose bath solution with soothing botanicals that will wash away any stress of the day.”
I enjoy baths although I don’t often have the time for them. This beautifully packaged bubble bath may change that. I love rose scented things so this is right up my alley. This is another great nod to Valentine’s day without being cliché. This is also a new brand for me so I’m excited to try them out.

A mysterious bag…

Cutting Board
ACME Party Box Company
Bamboo Heart Cutting Board & Cheese Knife
(Suggested Retail: $32.00)
Category: Must Have Home
Description: “”We love cheese so much we wanted to cut it on a heart shaped board. Perfect for picnics of a special thank you to your hosts, this bamboo board is as functional as it is beautiful. Enjoy the paired cheese knife for easy meals on the go!”
Verdict: Love!
This is a Popsugar exclusive and I adore it. I’ve pinned many an ACME fancy pants picnic kit that is way out of my budget, so I was so psyched to get this cutting board set. It’s adorable and super practical. The knife is high quality and the set will become an adorable cheese server for my next party. Again, another nod to Valentine’s day without being too cutesy. Well done, Popsugar.

NecklaceNecklace Close
Mini Arrow Pendant Necklace
(Suggested Retail: $32.00)
Category: Must Have Fashion
Description: “We’ve been struck with Cupid’s arrow and fallen madly in love with this mini arrow pendant necklace from BaubleBar. This bestseller’s slim, modern design and pave detailing give you an extra reason to sparkle.”
Verdict: Hit!
I’ve recently become addicted to Baublebar necklaces so this was another welcome addition. Subscribers could get gold or silver and I actually preferred silver so yet another win for me. This is a delicate chain that will be great for everyday wear or layered with other pieces. I couldn’t find the exact one on BaubleBar so I don’t think it’s for sale anymore, but they have a ton of great stuff so I recommend dropping by there to browse for pretties while you’re trapped inside during yet.another.winter.storm.

Figs & Rouge 100% Natural Balm in Pomegranate
(Retail: $8.00)
Category: Must Have Beauty
Description: “Figs & Rouge soothing balm will keep your lips kissable for hours on end. This lovely tin adds instant handbag glam so you can be prepared in any moisture emergency!”
Verdict: Hit!
Is anyone else slightly weirded out by the phrase “moisture emergency”? Just me? In any case, I love lip balms and cute packaging and fruity flavors so this is a win for me. Damn it, Popsugar you’re really hitting it out of the park this month.

Chuao Chocolatier Ravishing Rocky Road Bar
(Suggested Retail: $6.00)
Category: Must Have Food
Description: “Prepare to be enchanged by Chuao’s Ravishing Rocky Road bar made with salted, carmaleized almonds and fluffy marshmallows. This handcrafted, all-natural chocolate bar is simply irresistible.!
Verdict: Hit!
Is it possible to have Valentine’s day without chocolate? That would be like a sky without stars or Sia without that little dancer girl. Chocolate, almonds and marshmallows—it’s like all my favorite treats in one cute little package. This was a very tasty hit.

Polish Mark Polish
Polish Swatch

Sally Beauty FingerPaints Nail Color in Pink Imagination (Suggested Retail: $35.50)
Description: “With just one coat, FingerPaints’ innovative formula gives you intense color, durable shine, and a long-lasting finish!”
Verdict: Damn it Popsugar, I can’t quit you..
Polish too? Oh Popsugar, you know the way to my heart. The one thing that was weird was that my polish came with something sort of stuck on it as you can see in my first pic. The bottle wasn’t broken or used, so something just must have gotten stuck to it when it was being packaged up. At first I was a little disappointed I didn’t snag a red shade, but then I looked at the color closely and it has a beautiful shimmer. The formula was lovely and did go on well with just one coat. If you’re shopping for drugstore polish brands I’d definitely give this brand a shot.

Full Box 2
Crazy in Love..

Oh Popsugar you stole my heart. This was a perfect Valentine’s day box. The theme was evident but  in an innovative and sophisticated way. This was so thoughtfully curated and is a great example of what a subscription box should be. I paid $42.95 for this box and received a retail value of approximately $139.50.  Not only is the value there, but I love and will use all of the items. This was a really awesome box and I hope Popsugar keeps up their meticulous curation for March.

Did you get the February Popsugar? If so, were you as crazy about it as I was?

Popsugar’s $100 LE Resort box is sold out, but if you nabbed one here’s a spoiler for one of the items:

Popsugar is a women’s lifestyle subscription that delivers a monthly box of fun, full-size products hand-selected by Popsugar editors.

In addition to Popsugar’s monthly must have boxes, they have some seasonal special edition boxes that contain uber luxe items.  The price tag on these boxes is higher, but the products you receive are high end.

Popsugar Must Have: March 2014

It’s Popsugar time again. So let’s jump into the March box and see what we find.
Box Open

Brokedown Blue Ikat Scarf (Retail: $72.00)
Category: Must Have Fashion
Verdict: Gift
Brokedown designed this scarf especially for Popsugar Must Have subscribers, and it’s super soft and nice quality.  Unfortunately I’m just not enthralled with the print.  I know blue is big this season, and I like the blue, but the overall print just isn’t that compelling for me.  I think this will make a great gift for someone who will enjoy the print more.

Harvest Snaps Snapea Crisps (Retail: $2.00)
Category: Must Have Food
Verdict:  Love!
So when I first saw these I was expecting to hate them.  I thought they were dried peas and I just prefer my veggies cooked and fresh.  These were so delicious and not overly salty. Even my boyfriend loved them.  I’ll definitely be picking these up the next time I see them in the grocery store.

Jurlique Herbal Recovery Advanced Serum (Suggested Retail: $27.00; 30mL: $54.00)
Category: Must Have Beauty
Verdict:  Love!
I adore trying out new serums and I’ve heard wonderful things about Jurlique.  I’m excited to give this one a try.  It also came with a coupon for 15% off on the Jurlique site.

Baublebar Elephant Ring Tree (Retail: $12.00)
Category: Must Have Home
Verdict:  Gift
This little guy is certainly adorable.  Unfortunately I have a fancy pants jewelry cabinet with about a million unfilled ring slots, so I don’t need a separate ring holder.  I’ll be adding this cutie to my gift pile. Also included was a 20% off coupon for order over $30 at Baublebar.

Activeforever Fusion Exercise Ball (Retail: $9.95)
Category: Must Have Fitness
Verdict:  On the Fence
I appreciate the inclusion of a fitness item, but I didn’t like that we got this ball but no pamphlet or DVD or anything to give us some exercises.  I know we can go online and search for stuff, but I think it’s incomplete.  If you send me a fitness item, I at least want a brochure to give me a few ideas to start with.

Dogeared Lucky Horsehoe Make a Wish Necklace (Retail: $30.00)
Category: Must Have Fashion
Verdict:  Love!
Okay so I’m super whimsical and the idea of a wish necklace appeals to me immensely.  Basically you make a wish and wear this necklace and when the string breaks your wish is ready to come true.  I have to say that I would never have bought this on my own, but I love it and I’ll be a little sad when it breaks (but not too sad, if my wish really does come true).  This came with a coupon for 20% the dogeared site.

Fig Bar
Nature’s Bakery Stone Ground Whole Wheat Strawberry Fig Bar
Category: Special Extra
Verdict:  Hit!
This bar was like a fig newton, but better.  I took it to work for breakfast and it was perfect with some coffee.  I would have no problem purchasing these on my own.

Full Box

I enjoyed this box even if everything wasn’t exactly to my taste.  It had a super high retail value of $152.95 (excluding the fig bar) and well worth the $33.88 I paid.  Once again I feel like Popsugar delivers consistent quality and value in their boxes.

Popsugar has another special edition box showing up next month:  The Must Have Resort.  I’ts Popsugar, Limited Edition and uses the word “resort”, so you know I snapped it up.
If you want to see what’s inside be sure to come back.

So what did you think of the March Popsugar Must Have Box?

Did you love the scarf print?  Was the wish necklace too whimsical for your taste?

Nina Garcia Quarterly Box – November 2013

When I opened my mailbox and found a jury duty summons there was only one thing that could make me feel better.  The fact that it was sitting on top of my Nina Garcia Quarterly box.  Quarterly is a service that offers quarterly subscriptions curated by all kinds of interesting folks who send select items in their special area of expertise.  Nina Garcia is listed a “Style Expert” so this is a fashion and beauty focused subscription and November 2013 is the launch of its first box.
I was a little perturbed by the size of the package.  It just didn’t seem big enough for a $100 subscription, but I’m not going to panic because I trust Nina.

First ImpressionThe first thing I find when I open it up is the nicest descriptive info I’ve gotten from any of my boxes.  It’s a long letter from Nina detailing all the items and why they were chosen.

CardsNina writes, “For my first box, I’ve handpicked products from this season that reflect what’s happening in fashion today: hot brands, wardrobe staples, beauty essentials and up-and-coming designers.”  She goes on to explain that she’s connected the items with an underlying theme: Glam Grunge.

Okay people, this is going to be good.

The first item is:
Leather Cuff
Leather Dual Cone Cuff by Baublebar:
(Estimated Retail: $32.00)
Verdict: Love!
This item is exclusive for Nina’s first Quarterly mailing. She writes that it “strikes that perfect balance between polish and edge”.  Okay one, how cool is to have something that only the other folks smart enough to subscribe to Nina’s box will get and 2. This thing is just badass.  What I also love about it is that it has 3 rows of snaps, so whether you have a larger wrist or a freakishly small one like I do, it will fit you.  This item also came with a Baublebar coupon for $15 off of any order of $30+.  Because this is an exclusive, I’m basing the retail on a somewhat similar studded bracelet on the Baublebar Site.

Ear Cuff
Jack Vartanian Ear Cuff:
  (Retail: ????)
Verdict: Love!
The ear cuff trend is everywhere and I think it looks pretty damn cool, but I’ve been on the fence as to whether I could pull it off.  But now that Nina Garcia has given me permission I am totally ready to rock this.  It’s so dainty but edgy, and its subtle enough to make that touch of punk seem effortless.  Now I googled trying to find a retail price only to discover that Jack Vartanian is super fancy – as in jewelry at Barneys with price tags in the thousands of dollars.  This might not be gold and diamonds, but I’m betting the retail on costume jewelry from this caliber of designer is quite high.

Faux Fur Stole by Adrienne Landau
(Estimated Retail: $39.90)
How did Nina know that I’ve been pinning fur scarves to my Pinterest board for the last two months?  This little stole is quite soft and has an easy Velcro closure.  It’s small so it can add just a touch of fur without overwhelming your outfit.  Plus it’s warm, which is helpful for facing NYC winters.  This is yet another item made exclusively for Nina (clearly everyone loves Nina or she’s got a safety deposit box chock full of incriminating photos).  So this is another one where it’s difficult to pinpoint a retail value.  Adrienne has products in stores from Saks Fifth Avenue to HSN.  Since this stole is faux we’ll estimate the price to be on par with this piece she has on HSN.

Too Faced La Créme Color Drenched Lip Cream in Teddy Berry:
  (Retail: $21.00)
Verdict: Love!
Nina chose four different shades of plum lipstick and included a different one in each box.  Mine seems to be a little on the lighter side, but I think it will complement my skin tone really well.  I’ve never tried any Too Faced cosmetics so I can’t wait to give this one a whirl.

Essie Polish in Shearling Darling:
(Retail: $8.50)
Verdict: Hit!
I am a sucker for dark red polishes and this is a lovely shade of burgundy.  I only own one Essie polish, so this will help build my collection.

Pearl+ Luxury Soap: (Retail: $6.00)
This is a detox soap comprised of crushed pearl and charcoal.  It sounds fascinating but I am really sensitive to smells and this one is just too strong.  It’s definitely a manly type soap (think musk and cologne).  I think I will be adding this one to the gift pile.

Open Kit
VBeauté It Kit Anti Age Skin Care System:
(Retail: $99.00)
Verdict: Love!
Okay so the cost of this little kit pretty much covered the entire box.  It is an anti-aging skin care system and this little clutch is designed to be TSA friendly.  I have to say this is the most luxe travel skincare set I have ever seen.  Included with this was a coupon code for $25 off of a $75+ at vbeaute.com. I am unfamiliar with this brand, but if their product is half as good as their packaging I will love it.

December 2013 Marie Claire Magazine:
(Retail: $3.99)
Verdict: Hit!
We all knew this would be in here.  I don’t subscribe to this magazine, so it’s nice to get a free copy.

Full Box

Amazing.  Badass.  Awesome.
I had high hopes for this subscription and it more than exceeded them.  I paid $100 for this box.  Without including the Jack Vartanian ear cuff or the coupons,  my estimated retail is already at $200.00.  I love nearly everything, and with the exception of the soap I will use it all myself.  It’s clear that Nina had a lot of input and took a lot of care with this box.  I also adore that she gave all the items a theme.  I have to say I think this is my favorite subscription box to date.  Brava Nina!

There is just one downside to this box.  I have to wait a few months until the next one.
