Jennifer Love Hewitt Fancy Box: January 2014

For info on Fancy subscriptions and a coupon code, check out the Backstory below.  Now let’s get to you regularly scheduled program.
Fancy

So I know a lot of you have been following my neverending saga with Jennifer Love Hewitt Fancy Box  The last two boxes I received were not the regular ones, but some amalgamation of previous boxes filled with repeat items.  So this month, JLove really needed to make up some ground.  I really really *want* to love this subscription and they keep making it oh so hard.  On January 23rd I received a mysterious email from “the fancy team” “confirming my tshirt” size and claiming they were “hard at work designing my tshirt”.  Well, I’m no Sherlock, but I think this means we’ll be getting a tshirt in this box.  Let’s jump in and find out.
Open

Now, I’m excited because for the first time in a long time I have cards for every item!  And they actually have comments from Jennifer Love Hewitt!  Hot Damn!  Maybe Fancy finally got the message that we actually want some celebrity in our celebrity curated boxes.
Open 2

Candle
Cake Candelabra
(Fancy Retail: $8.00; Amazon Retail: $7.49)
Verdict:  Hit!
I opened this and for a moment I was confused and just couldn’t quite get the Jennifer Love Hewitt connection to this fancy pants cake topper.   Cue my seeking out the fancy reference card….and this note from JLove, “I love baking and I can’t wait to top my next cake with this masterpiece!  Sometimes candles just don’t cut it.”  I also love baking so whoever’s next in line for one of my birthday cakes is will get a candelabra instead of the regular grocery store candle.

USB
Message in a Bottle 4G USB Drive(Fancy Retail: $28.00; Amazon Retail: $14.95)
Verdict:  Love!
I can always use another thumb drive and the poet in me loves the idea of modern technology meeting the old fashioned romance of a message in a bottle.  This would be great to use if you want to surprise your significant other with some type of digital gift.   You can even tie a cute little ribbon around the neck.

earrings
Black Acrylic Diamond Earrings
 (Fancy Retail:20.00;)
Verdict:  Hit!
I probably wouldn’t pick these up for myself but they are different and I can certainly wear them with a wide variety of outfits.  They also seem like an item Jennifer Love Hewitt might actually enjoy herself, which is the whole point of this box.

Tee
Very Fancy Tee
(Fancy Retail: $28.00)
Verdict:  Complete Utter & Total Miss

Jennifer Love Hewitt asks on the card “Who doesn’t love being Fancy?”
My answer: “This girl right here.”

So this the tshirt Fancy designed after oh so carefully emailing me to confirm my size. I chose an XL because I have big boobs and prefer not to have logos and pictures stretched weirdly across my chest.  Had I known what I would be getting I would have sized way way down, but let’s start with the design itself.  This looks like something you picked up at the boardwalk of Seaside Heights in 1985. It’s so frick’n ugly.  Really, what, why, I just can’t….  There is a giant world of awesome tshirts out there, covered in things like the Tardis, and cool quotations from the Princess Bride and even the Thundercats and this is what they pick?  This?  An 80sish version of their stupid Fancy logo?  People, I can’t anymore, I just can’t.

And getting back to the subject of the size… this is #%$#%#@%#@ MEN’S XL!  This thing fits like a damn dress on me and I am not a little person.  And don’t give me that unisex bullshit – there is no unisex.  There is just women’s shirts and men’s shirts.   When manufacturers are too lazy to make women’s tees that account for our many curves, they just take a man’s tshirt and stick a unisex label on it.  Last I checked Jennifer Love Hewitt’s subscription was a WOMAN’S subscription.  Why would you send a men’s tshirt?  WHY?????   This is far too big an XL to be considered even unisex.  This is a men’s tshirt, full stop.

Full Box
Overall

I paid full price for this box so including shipping I paid $46.95.  The Fancy retail of this box was $84.00 but I find that highly inflated.  No way was that tee worth $28 and that thumb drive was over $10.00 less on Amazon.

So we were doing fairly well with the items until we got to the horrid tshirt.  I could actually see the Jennifer Love Hewitt vibe in the choices and if the tee had come in a women’s size (or cut) I would have put aside my personal distaste for the logo design and called the box a win.  But sending a giant men’s tshirt in a woman’s subscription box is just ridiculous.  I’m sure when Jennifer Love Hewitt (or her “people”) chose this they assumed it would be an actual woman’s shirt.  In any case I’m calling this box a draw.  Two steps forward, two steps back and we’re doing the same damn cha cha.

So ladies, what do you think of unisex tshirts?
And what do you think of the Fancy logo on this months’ shirt?  Hideous or cute 80s retro?

Top 13 of 2013 – A Few of My Favorites from Subscription Boxes

So now that 2013 is behind us, it’s time to take a look back through all the awesome stuff my wonderful addiction to subscription boxes brought to my doorstep.  I’ve chosen my favorite 13 items from all of my boxes.  It was so hard to choose, but these turned out to be the ones I either loved the most or got the most use from.

AUGUST

Jelly FishJelly Fish Tripod for Smartphones from the August 2013 Original Fancy Box
(Retail: $10.95 on Amazon)
Original Fancy Box
I had just delved into the world of smartphones when I got this little gadget from Fancy.  It’s great for taking video or watching Netflix.

SEPTEMBER

Bombshell BoxAdd-ons
Julep Cleansing Oil & Konjac Cleansing Sponge from the September 2013 Maven Box
(Retail: $28.00/Maven Price: $22.40 & Retail: $12.00/Maven Price: $9.50)
Julep Maven Box
This cleansing oil smells amazing (like oranges) and removes your makeup without drying out your skin.  It’s one of my favorite Julep products ever.  The konjac sponge exfoliates  without being overly harsh and works great with so many other products.

Charger
Fancy Power Grid by Tego: from the September 2013 Original Fancy Box
(
Retail $60.00 on Fancy)
Original Fancy Box
One of the things Fancy does best is bring practical little gadgets that I know I need but never get around to picking up for myself.  This is a great backup charger that can help your dying Iphone battery last a bit longer.

Ring
Rachel Zoe Gold Knot Ring: from the Popsugar Fall Must Have Special Edition Box
(Retail: $75.00 on Piperlime.com)
Popsugar Must Have
I tend to gravitate toward white metals and super sparkly things so this understated gold ring was a great addition to my jewelry collection.  I would never have picked it out myself but it adds a touch of elegance to my outfits and I’ve worn it a lot more than I would have guessed when I first pulled it out of the box.

OCTOBER

Anisa, Valerie & Ciara
Ciara Polish
from the October 2013 Maven Box
(Retail $14.00/Sale: $4.99)
Julep Maven Box
October brought my favorite Julep collection.  It was the only time all year that I did a full upgrade.  And within that awesome “Rebel set” was my favorite polish ever: Ciara.  It is somehow edgy, vampy and ethereal all at the same time.  It’s a magenta polish with a teal microglitter and pictures do not do it justice.  Pick it up, you’ll love it (I promise).

USB Strip
Contort Flexible USB Hub
from the October 2013 Original Fancy Box
(Fancy Retail: $25.00/Amazon Retail: $7.39)
Original Fancy Box
As usual, Fancy delivers another gadget I know I needed but just didn’t bother to buy.  I used to have to take turns plugging in my thumb drive and then my camera. Now with a USB hub I can do it all at once.  (Fancy needs to hope I never get gadget-savvy because then I might not need a subscription).

Purse  Midnight Clutch by Emilie M.from the October 2013 Original Fancy Box
(Fancy Retail: $50.00)
Original Fancy Box
I thought this bag was really cute when I first got it and since I actually didn’t own anything in this style it was a nice plus.  It ended up being my go to bag for my nights out.  You can easily fit your phone, wallet and other essentials plus it matches everything.

NOVEMBER

Ear CuffJack Vartanian Ear Cuff from the November 2013 Nina Garcia Quarterly Box.
(Retail: ???)
Nina Garcia Quarterly Box
I can’t tell you how badly I wanted to be the uber edgy cool girl that can wear stuff like ear cuffs.  And then Nina Garcia sent me a fabulous one by a fancy pants jewelry designer.  I probably wouldn’t have had the courage to try this on my own, but once Nina  sent it my way I realized I could rock it.

Eyeshadow
Le Métier De Beauté –  Pretty in Punk Eye Shadow Palette from the Special Edition Neiman Marcus Popsugar Must Have Box
(Retail: $95.00)
Popsugar Must Have
This beauty palette opened up a whole new world of eyeshadow application.  Did you know we were all doing smoky eyes wrong?  And who better to tell us how to do it than the French!  This is the most luxurious eyeshadow palette I’ve ever owned and I love that it’s opened up a whole new world of makeup for me.

Candle
Nest Candle in Birchwood Pine
from the Special Edition Neiman Marcus Popsugar Must Have Box
(Retail: $34.00)
Popsugar Must Have
Sometimes I fall in love with candles.  Okay,  I frequently fall in love with candles.  But I really, really mean it when I say I love this candle. It is so pretty and while it looked awesome with my Christmas decorations it’s going to look amazing all year long.

DECEMBER

BraceletErickson Beamon Rocks Blondie Stone Bangle from the Limited Edition Popsugar Holiday Box
(Estimated Retail $98.00)
Popsugar Must Have
Okay maybe I’m just a sucker for sparkly things, but I loved the rhinestones on this bracelet.  They were just ethereal and twinkly and the captured my imagination the moment I took this out of the box.  They look so much better in person than in my photograph.

TokyomilkTokyomilk’s Dark Body Soufflé in “Chance” from the Limited Edition Popsugar Holiday Box
(Retail: $40.00)
Popsugar Must Have
You know when it comes to beauty products I’m pretty easy.  You can win me over with gorgeous packaging so this body cream had me at hello.  It proved itself with a soft fragrance and rich, but not greasy formula.  This is a great gift for the girl who thinks she has everything.

DatebookGraphic Image 2014 Datebook: from the Limited Edition Popsugar Holiday Box
(Retail: $97.00)
Popsugar Must Have
Okay so I’m going to be honest.  A planner that costs $100 is for some other girl.  I would never even think of buying something like this and maybe that’s why I love it so very much.  Along with calendars, maps and room for notes it has lists of common words and phrases with translations in English, French, Dutch, Italian and Spanish (including the dates of all their different holidays!)  Just ask me how to say chicken in Dutch (Huhn) or for two nights in French (pour deux nuits).  ASK ME!  Okay, I got a little carried away, but this little book makes me feel like I’m a jetsetting socialite who spends spring time in Paris and summers in the Hamptons, which is exactly what I need when I’m trapped in my windowless, basement office in the Upper East Side of Manhattan.

Now a few winners in the larger subscription categories:

Overall Favorite Subscription:
Popsugar Must Have & Nina Garcia Quarterly Box
Since Nina’s box was brand new and only had one come out this year it was hard to judge it against the others, but it was cohesive and chic and exactly what you expect from Nina Garcia.  Popsugar is the most consistant when it comes to awesome items I can use in my life so I chose it for the top spot.

Favorite One Time Box:
Popsugar Limited Edition Holiday Box
As super fancy as the Neiman Marcus box was, the Holiday box just fit my needs and lifestyle so perfectly (as you notice it had three of my top thirteen picks).

Did you subscribe to any boxes in 2013?  I’d love to hear your favorite things.

Jennifer Love Hewitt Fancy Box – December 2013 Box – The legend continues

Box
No, you are not having déjà vu.  I already reviewed a December 2013 Jennifer Love Hewitt box.  Another one magically appeared at my doorstep yesterday.  I was quite surprised, but I figured since the last one was the “Welcome Box” not the real December travel themed box other folks received, I was probably just getting back on schedule.  Cue my surprise when I opened the box to find yet another version.  I’m going to just jump into the items and then we can discuss my odd saga with the Jennifer Love Hewitt Fancy Box.

Opening

Bracelet
Katie Dean Bad to the Bone Bracelet(Fancy Retail: $18.00)
Verdict:  Epic Miss
You might find that déjà vu feeling getting stronger.  It’s probably because this same cheap bracelet was sent in the last box.  I hated it then and I hate it even more now.

Rest
Steep Up to the Plate Teabag Rest:((Fancy Retail:$10.00)
Verdict:  Total Miss
Still feeling like you’ve seen and done this all before?  You have.  This teabag rest was in the November box.  I had it in my “gift” pile since I’m not a tea drinker and I still haven’t found anyone to give it to yet.  Now I have a matching set.  Joy.

Mug
Camera Lens Mug:
(Fancy Retail: $15.00;Amazon Retail: $10.69)
Verdict:
  Gift
This is an insulated mug that looks like a camera lens.  I think this item has a very specific audience and I’m not sure I see a “Jennifer Love Hewitt” connection.  Thankfully, there is a person on my Christmas list who would enjoy and use this.

Jewelry RollOpen Roll
Ted Baker Jewelry Roll
(Fancy Retail:$40.00)
Verdict:  Hit!
I saved the best for last, since this is the one item that made this box at least a little worthwhile for me.  It’s a floral print jewelry roll that you can use for travel.  It’s compact, well made and useful for any woman you know who wears jewelry and likes to travel.  It’s also an item I can actually see fitting in with the Jennifer Love Hewitt aesthetic that this box is supposed to have.  I wouldn’t have paid $40 for it, but it’s a nice piece to have.

Cards
Overall
Full Box

Before we even get to the dollars and cents we have a lot to discuss.  For those who aren’t regular readers, you can read about the start of this fiasco in my last Jennifer Love Hewitt box review.  So after I received the “Welcome box” instead of the regular December box, I contacted Fancy Customer service.  My big concern was for my next box, since I wanted to be assured I would receive the current box and not repeats.  I was assured that after the Welcome box I would be receiving the regular up to date subscription boxes.  Instead, this is what showed up at my door.

I’ve already sent Fancy customer service another email, and am awaiting a response.  Beyond that I have no idea what’s going on.  This isn’t the Welcome box, the regular December box and if it’s the January box then there are going to be a lot of angry subscribers because half this box is stuff they’ve most likely received.

Now, I had some money left on a Fancy gift card and with the coupon code I was charged $25.30 against my balance.  According to my calculations this box has a Fancy retail of $83.00  and (with the lower Amazon price on the mug) a regular retail of $78.69.   The only worthwhile item in here for me is the jewelry roll but I probably wouldn’t have purchased it at this time since I currently don’t have travel plans and I already have a jewelry travel case.

I would say though that if you are considering the Jennifer Love Hewitt subscription, you hold off until they fix some of these issues.  If you want to try Fancy I’d recommend trying out the Cocha Rocha instead as that appears to be a similar aesthetic and seems far more consistent based on the reviews I’ve seen.  From what I can tell these issues with the Jennifer Love Hewitt box seem to be for recent newer subscribers or re-subscribers. If you’ve been subscribed for awhile with no interruption, you probably won’t be getting all these weird boxes.

If you get the Jennifer Love Hewitt box I’d love to hear your experience and thoughts.  If you receive any other celebrity curated Fancy boxes I’d love to know if you had any similar issues.

If you’re still with me, let’s move on to the review of the December 2013 Jennifer Love Hewitt Fancy Box.
Box

It seems this is the month that Fancy decided to test my blogging abilities.  First, there are no little cards to tell me about the products, but perhaps that’s not necessary since this box looks surprisingly familiar.  Why is it familiar?  Because it’s nearly identical to the very first Jennifer Love Hewitt Fancy box that was sent out in May.   Let’s discuss.
Open

Beanie
Cake Unisex Beanie in Black (Fancy Retail: $40.00)
Verdict:  Miss
A fluorescent orange beanie went out in the JLH May box, so technically this black one is a huge improvement.  While I like knit hats, I don’t really do logos and this is pretty boring as far as hats go.  (I like a little flair with my headgear).  Fancy is supposed to be about the fun cool stuff you might not think to buy.  I can get these hats at any street corner in NYC for about $5.  To its credit, the beanie is well made and seems durable.  It would probably be a pretty nice gift for a guy who doesn’t mind wearing logos.

Bracelet
Katie Dean Bad to the Bone Bracelet (Fancy Retail: $18.00)
Verdict:  Complete Miss
This exact bracelet was included in the May box.  From a fashion standpoint, I like the idea of mixing whimsical little skulls with a metallic bead.  From an execution standpoint this item fails.  If you’re going to string one strand of beads on an elastic cord, those beads need to be fabulous in order for your jewelry not to look cheap.  These beads are not fabulous, heck the gold ones are basically just pony beads.  It’s an incredibly cheap looking bracelet and looks more suited to middle-schoolers than a grown woman.  This would cost you at most $3.00 to make yourself (and I’m being generous).  I find this item to be the biggest disappointment in the whole box.

Headphones
Urban Beats Headphones in Pink (Fancy Retail:$40.00; Amazon Retail: $32.50)
Verdict:  Hit!
These headphones were included in the May box but in mint instead of pink.  I would have loved the mint as that shade is more my speed, but I’ve been looking for this style of headphone to use on cold days (I figure they can double as earmuffs).  The pink is fun even if it’s not what I would have chosen.

Wayfarer
The Fancy Wayfarer
(Fancy Retail:$30.00)
Verdict:  Like

The May box included the basic black wayfarers (shown in the link) while this one had a patterned pair.  I could always use an extra pair of sunglasses and I like the print and shape of these, however it seems an odd addition for this time of year.  They seem way better suited for that earlier box.  I do prefer this print to the solid black they sent out before.

Full Box
Overall

With a Fancy discount coupon and a couple of referral dollars I was charged $25.30 which I used my gift card to cover.  The Fancy retail of this box was $128.00 and the retail with the lower Amazon price was $120.50.    Unfortunately I think both the beanie and the bracelet are far over-valued for what they are.

Thankfully, the headphones coupled with my discount made this box worthwhile, because at full price I would have been hugely disappointed.  Even putting aside the fact that this box is pretty much a duplicate of a previous one and didn’t include any cards, it still doesn’t measure up. The bracelet is cheap, the beanie is boring and they could have done so much more interesting stuff for the holiday season.

I wasn’t subscribed at the time of the May box, so thankfully this box isn’t a duplicate for me.  I’m interested to see what happens for currently subscribed folks that received that May box already.   Will they be getting something different or a redux of that same box?

I have to say that if there is a totally different December Jennifer Love Hewitt box that other subscribers receive, I will be uber disappointed and probably put in a complaint to Fancy.  While the original subscription is different per customer, the celebrity ones are supposed to be the same for all the subscribers and I feel like I’ve gotten the leftovers instead of a brand, spanking new celebrity box.

So the question for you dear readers is: even if you hadn’t received the box before, would you be upset to receive a duplicate of an older celebrity box instead of the current one?

UPDATE!!!
I contacted Fancy about recieving an older box instead of the current one and got a very quick response. It is as follows: “Whenever a Fancy Box subscription is cancelled, and re-subscribed, the latest one is always treated as a new subscription. It just so happens the Jennifer Love Hewitt Subscription has a welcome box of her favorite items; when a new subscription comes in, that would be the box sent…This is only exclusive to that specific subscription.”

I had canceled and resubscribed in order to use a coupon code so that it what caused me to receive the “Welcome box” from May.  Fancy was gracious in their response and also gave me a $15 giftcard.  If you had a smiliar situation to mine, I’d suggest dropping them a line.  I’m not sure which other subscriptions are affected by this type of problem, but I was told the original Fancy box is not.

This “welcome box” issue is going to be extremely problematic for people that like to experiment by trying out different Fancy boxes thus canceling and resubscribing frequently.  So currently, if you are interested in the Jennifer Love Hewitt Fancy box and decide to subscribe today you will recieve this “Welcome Box” and not whatever the current box is.  After your welcome box, your subscription should just pick up with whatever is current.

I strongly hope that Fancy rethinks how they’ve set up this subscription because if someone hates this box, they will still need to purchase it in order to get access to a Jennifer Love Hewitt subscription.  They are going to run into a lot of people just opting for a different subscription at Fancy or going to one of its competitors.  There will also be quite a few confused and angry subscribers who will read blogs like mine and wonder why they are getting a different box than everyone else.   Please fix this Fancy before the small problem becomes a big one.

Jennifer Love Hewitt Fancy Box – October 2013

For more on Fancy  subscription boxes and a coupon code, jump down below, but let’s get to the review of my October Jennifer Love Hewitt Fancy Box.  This is one of the five celebrity curated boxes that Fancy offers.

Open Box

Somehow Jennifer Love Hewitt must have known that October is my birthday month because she sent me a party in a box.  I was a bit disappointed with her last month, but she’s more than made up for it with a booze themed box centering around her favorite drink, the Cosmopolitan.

ShakerFinal Touch Glass Cocktail Shaker (Retail $25:00 on Fancy; $21.99 on Amazon)
Verdict:
Hit!
This is a really sturdy and practical cocktail shaker.  It’s got seven different drink recipes written on the glass along with measurements in both ounce and milliliter.  I have a metal cocktail shaker, but I’ve been wanting an additional glass one so we can make more than one cocktail at a time.

Cutting BoardCore Bamboo Mixology Bar Board: (Retail: $15.00 on Fancy & Amazon)
Verdict:
  Hit!
This little bar board has a recipe for a cosmopolitan cut right in.  It’s a great size and it has a hole cut in the corner so you can hang it up.  I actually don’t own a cutting board in this size nor do I have one just for my bar.  This is a welcome addition.

ChitchatsChitChats Drink Markers: (Retail: $10.00 on Fancy; $9.02 on Amazon )
Verdict:
  Hit!
These are reusable drink markers that let you write fun messages.  While I’d probably never pick these up on my own because I don’t tend to have large parties, they’re fun and I’m sure I’ll pull a few out for my birthday.

Molecular

Molecule-R Cosmpolitan: (Retail: $29.00, this size kit not available on Amazon)
Verdict:
Love!
This kit includes 3 recipes for molecular mixology at home.  You get encapsulated cosmopolitan, cranberry foam and citrus caviar.  I have been dying to try one of these kits, but they were always way more than I wanted to spend.  I was so excited to see this and I can’t wait to try it out with some friends.

CardsSo overall, I was thrilled with this box.  I will use every single item.  This is my first Fancy box that really had a solid theme and I hope they do this more in the future.  I also liked that it had a real connection to Jennifer Love Hewitt by featuring her favorite drink.  Now if you’re not a drinker, you could be disappointed by this box.  However, each of these items can be coupled with a corresponding bottle of booze to make a great gift.  It’s particularly suited for hostess gifts.  As long as you know some people who like to booze it up from time to time, you can still get a lot of use out of this box.

Full BoxEven using the cheaper amazon price on the shaker, this box retailed for $75.99.  Normally it would cost me $46.95 (including shipping),  but Fancy gave me a $15 gift card for a previous error with a box and you lovely readers gave me some referral credits, so this month I only ended up spending $22.95.   I would have been thrilled with this box at the higher price, so I’m super excited to have gotten it for such a low cost.  (And a big thank you to those of you who gave me referral credits!  It is much appreciated!)

What did you guys think?  Would you have loved the booze filled box or been bored with the theme?
