Cookbook Cookie!

One Sweet Cookie by Tracy Zabar (Fancy Retail: $30.00; Amazon Retail: $20.79)
Verdict:  Hit!
When it comes to cookbooks, I’m as easy as an easy bake oven.  I love to collect them and typically can find at least one useful recipe in most of the volumes that end up on my shelves.  This book is for fancy pants cookies – the kind you see at tea parties or bridal showers.  I love baking, but I favor cakes and pies, since my oven doesn’t understand that pesky concept of temperature.  It’s so old the numbers on the dial have rubbed off, so there’s only a deep scratch where 350 degrees *should* be.  If you want any other temps, you’ll just have to guess.  It also won’t stay on any one temperature for too long (it, like me, is a fickle bitch). But I digress.  Anyway, these are super fancy cookies so they’d be nice for Christmas gift boxes or to serve at parties.  I think I’ll start with something less temperature sensitive, like a bar recipe and hope for the best.

Trinket BoxTrinket
French Macaron Trinket Box: (Fancy Retail: $14.00)
Verdict:  Gift
When I first saw the card for this little trinket box I thought it was glass, but it’s actually made of some type of resin.  It’s cute, although the color is slightly disappointing.  (I was hoping for a cheerful pastel in lieu of poop brown).  Once I realized this item wasn’t breakable, I thought it’d be something cute to tuck into my niece’s Christmas gift.  She loves baked goods and little things and hiding little things in other little things so this should be perfect.

Creme
Archipelago Botanicals Soy Milk Cream (Fancy Retail:$18.00; Amazon Retail: $14.28)
Verdict:  Hit!
Surprisingly I don’t actually have much in the way of body lotion  and I don’t have any soy milk based body products so this will be fun to try out. This is another great giftable since it seems like a subtle scent that would appeal to a lot of folks.

Spatula
Pop Chomp Spatula:
(Fancy Retail: $12.00; Amazon Retail:$8.94)
Verdict:  Hit!/Gift
Okay, okay it’s a spatula.  But it’s a *cute* spatula and pretty darn sturdy to boot.  I own quite a few spatulas so I’m not sure if I’ll be adding this to my collection or including it as part of a Christmas gift.  Pair it with an upscale baking mix for an adorable hostess gift.

Tea Rest
Steep Up to the Plate Teabag Rest:(
Fancy Retail:$10.00)
Verdict:  Gift!
So for years I have tried to convince myself that I could be a tea drinker.  Whether loose tea leaves or bags, green or oolong, I just can’t drink more than a few sips.  Oddly, I’m also not much of a coffee drinker either.  Truthfully, I’m just a heathen who drinks diet soda in the morning.  (Listen, I won’t comment on your caffeine fix, if you don’t comment on mine).  This little tray is whimsical and charming and paired with some fancy teas it’s a perfect gift for someone who actually drinks (or likes) tea.

Open Box
Overall

With shipping, and minus a few referral dollars (thanks again!) I paid $44.95 for this box.  The total retail value on Fancy came out to $84.00. If you factor in the cheaper prices I found on Amazon for a couple items, the cost would be $68.01.

Cards
I’m satisfied with this box as a great way to pick up some holiday gifts, although there wasn’t a single item I absolutely loved.  I was also slightly disappointed that the cards didn’t really link back to JLove (although the psuedo cookies and milk theme was appealing.)

I really want to see more of a link between the celebrity and their box items since the big draw of the curated subscriptions are the celebrities involved.  I thought last month did a great job of giving us info about Jennifer Love Hewitt (her favorite cocktail) while providing a fun cohesive box.

So what do you think?  Do you want more celebrity in your celebrity themed boxes, or is it enough to pick up some cool swag?

Jennifer Love Hewitt Fancy Box – October 2013

For more on Fancy  subscription boxes and a coupon code, jump down below, but let’s get to the review of my October Jennifer Love Hewitt Fancy Box.  This is one of the five celebrity curated boxes that Fancy offers.

Open Box

Somehow Jennifer Love Hewitt must have known that October is my birthday month because she sent me a party in a box.  I was a bit disappointed with her last month, but she’s more than made up for it with a booze themed box centering around her favorite drink, the Cosmopolitan.

ShakerFinal Touch Glass Cocktail Shaker (Retail $25:00 on Fancy; $21.99 on Amazon)
Verdict:
Hit!
This is a really sturdy and practical cocktail shaker.  It’s got seven different drink recipes written on the glass along with measurements in both ounce and milliliter.  I have a metal cocktail shaker, but I’ve been wanting an additional glass one so we can make more than one cocktail at a time.

Cutting BoardCore Bamboo Mixology Bar Board: (Retail: $15.00 on Fancy & Amazon)
Verdict:
  Hit!
This little bar board has a recipe for a cosmopolitan cut right in.  It’s a great size and it has a hole cut in the corner so you can hang it up.  I actually don’t own a cutting board in this size nor do I have one just for my bar.  This is a welcome addition.

ChitchatsChitChats Drink Markers: (Retail: $10.00 on Fancy; $9.02 on Amazon )
Verdict:
  Hit!
These are reusable drink markers that let you write fun messages.  While I’d probably never pick these up on my own because I don’t tend to have large parties, they’re fun and I’m sure I’ll pull a few out for my birthday.

Molecular

Molecule-R Cosmpolitan: (Retail: $29.00, this size kit not available on Amazon)
Verdict:
Love!
This kit includes 3 recipes for molecular mixology at home.  You get encapsulated cosmopolitan, cranberry foam and citrus caviar.  I have been dying to try one of these kits, but they were always way more than I wanted to spend.  I was so excited to see this and I can’t wait to try it out with some friends.

CardsSo overall, I was thrilled with this box.  I will use every single item.  This is my first Fancy box that really had a solid theme and I hope they do this more in the future.  I also liked that it had a real connection to Jennifer Love Hewitt by featuring her favorite drink.  Now if you’re not a drinker, you could be disappointed by this box.  However, each of these items can be coupled with a corresponding bottle of booze to make a great gift.  It’s particularly suited for hostess gifts.  As long as you know some people who like to booze it up from time to time, you can still get a lot of use out of this box.

Full BoxEven using the cheaper amazon price on the shaker, this box retailed for $75.99.  Normally it would cost me $46.95 (including shipping),  but Fancy gave me a $15 gift card for a previous error with a box and you lovely readers gave me some referral credits, so this month I only ended up spending $22.95.   I would have been thrilled with this box at the higher price, so I’m super excited to have gotten it for such a low cost.  (And a big thank you to those of you who gave me referral credits!  It is much appreciated!)

What did you guys think?  Would you have loved the booze filled box or been bored with the theme?

Jennifer Love Hewitt Fancy Box – September 2013

Inside

For more on Fancy  subscription boxes and a coupon code, jump down below, but let’s get to the review of the September Jennifer Love Hewitt Fancy Box.  This is one of the five celebrity curated boxes that Fancy offers.

Polish

Limited Edition Ciate Nail Polish Caviar Manicure in Tutti Fruitti: (Retail $25:00)
Verdict: Miss

As you probably know if you read the blog, I have a Julep subscription so in theory this should work since I love nail stuff.  The thing is this looks like something it takes at least a little skill to apply and I am still working on not getting nail polish all over my fingers, hands and table.  There is no way I would be able to pull this off and not have those little beads everywhere.  I also don’t think it’s the best look for work.  In terms of mass appeal, every time I look at the pictures I envision those beads scattering all over the floor and women frantically running to keep their toddlers and dogs from eating them.  It’s an interesting item, but I think impractical for most folks.  Another one for my gift stash.

Shower Gel

L’Occitane Almond Shower Oil: (Retail: $8.50)
Verdict:
Product = Hit; Size = Miss

Now according to the Fancy site this product is $10, but the L’Occitane site lists it at $8.50.  As you can tell from the picture, this product is very small basically a deluxe sample size.  In a box this expensive where even shipping is extra, I expect better sizes.  And if you are going to go the sample route, then either do a couple items as a “travel set” or pick some things that work great in someone’s every day bag, like hand cream, lip balm, antibacterial, etc.  L’Occitane does make wonderful items, so the product itself is welcome.

Bandaids

Mustache Bandages:  (Retail: $6.00)
Verdict:
  Hit!

While I’d never pay $6.00 for these, they are fun and practical, plus the tin is extra cute.  I’m not sure if you can tell in the picture, but the tin came slightly dented.  It included a “free prize inside.”  Mine was a temporary tattoo of a zombie so that’s a double win right there.

NecklaceCloseup

Sophie Sparrow Shark Tooth Necklace:  (Retail: $40.00)
Verdict:
Miss

This is a brass necklace with a long chain.  For me personally it doesn’t read as a shark tooth.  My first impression was more toward a variation on a Native American arrowhead.  Honestly, it’s not my aesthetic and my brass chain actually came with a tiny bit that was already tarnished.  I think the necklace was aiming for edgy and instead languishes at mediocre and uncompelling.  The retail on Fancy is $40, but a  quick google search found tons on ebay and craiglist in the $20/$25 range.  So if you happen to love this, I’d suggest picking it up on one of those sites for a lot less.

Book

One Line a Day: A Five-Year Memory Book (Retail $12.66)
Verdict:
Gift

This is a journal with an interesting variation.  It’s a 5 year journal that is set up for you to write just one line a day.  It’s well made and a cool concept, but sadlyI have enough daily writing projects.  I do think however it will make a great gift.  I’m thinking it’s perfect for an expectant parent, and once the kid is born they can jot down a line every day about how trying or wonderful parenting can be.  Now again, this is overpriced on Fancy.  According to Fancy, the price is $25, but you can pick it up on Amazon for $12.66.

CardsSo overall, I was kind of disappointed with this box.  There wasn’t much for me to use personally and it didn’t feel particularly Jennifer Love Hewitt-esque.  The cards that come with the box give a little info on the products, but also state why the celebrity chose them.  This time, only three items had info on why JLove chose them (the necklace, the bandaids and the journal).  The nail polish set and the shower oil only contained generic messages.

Full
This box cost me $46.95, according to the retail values (using the cheapest prices I found) it’s worth $92.16.  The problem is I probably wouldn’t have selected a lot of these—even as gifts.  I’m hoping next month is improved otherwise as much as it breaks my heart, I may need to say goodbye to the Jennifer Love Hewitt Box.

What did you guys think of the items?  Am I being too hard on Fancy?  Did you love anything?
