Julep Maven: June 2017: Bask in the Heat + $20 Off

I got my first royalty check for “Ice Maiden’s Tale” and I really don’t want to brag but I can totes buy myself a slice of pizza now.  Maybe next time, I’ll make enough to add on a can of soda.  We’ll have to play it by ear.  But in the interim, I’ve got a review for you today and a fab coupon offer from Julep.

Julep’s June Collection, “Bask in the Heat”, offered a new mascara and some warm polish shades.  I’m always on the hunt for the perfect mascara so I thought I’d give this box a shot.

 MY CUSTOMIZABLE MAVEN BOX

With a Twist – Lash Boosting Bamboo Mascara
(Retail $22.00/Maven Price: $22.40)
Verdict: Like
Description: “This multitasking mascara lengthens and volumizes lashes with just a twist of the customizable wand. Bamboo extracts & peptides support healthier, longer, fuller lashes over time. To use: To build volume, twist the customizable wand to shorten the brush. Sweep upward from base to tip. To separate and lengthen lashes, use the wand in its fully extended position. Repeat the same sweeping motion, wiggle up as you go until desired look is achieved.”
This mascara features a unique customizable wand that allows you to  adjust the length.  I’ll be honest, I haven’t even tried that part yet.  I basically just used it as is and like an idiot totally forgot it could be adjusted.  The formula itself isn’t too thick or thin and does a nice job of covering lashes without being too smudgeriffic.  I found though that it didn’t give me quite as much volume as some of my favorite brands, but I haven’t experimented with the different application techniques so I’ll need to play around with it a bit more.

Cushion Complexion 5-in-1 Skin Perfector with Turmeric
in Alabaster

(Retail $30.00/Maven Price: $24.00)
Verdict: Hit as a Concealer – Fail as a Foundation
Color Description: Light Alabaster with Cool Undertone
“This multitasking skin perfector has a natural, demi-matte finish with buildable medium-to-full coverage that conceals, corrects, illuminates, blurs & brightens.  The convenient cushion tip applicator allows for easy and precise application, even on the go. Use it to spot correct and conceal, or all over as a foundation.”

I don’t remember Julep releasing this as the featured beauty product for a collection, but this was a recent release. I was so so excited to see a pale shade with a cool undertone that I nabbed this immediately.  The pictures above show the swatch on application and then how it looks blended in.  It blended into my skin tone beautifully and worked great under my eyes and on spots where I just wanted to even out my skin tone.

That being said, let’s discuss Julep’s suggestion to use this all over as a foundation.
#1 – This little stick is supposed to retail for $30.  How long do you think it will last if you are using it as a foundation? You’d be spending so much that you could pretty much buy any foundation you want  (even the really high end products) for much less.
#2 – The packaging is not conducive to application as a foundation.  Cushion compact foundations are a thing.  They are everywhere in Kbeauty and plenty of other brands have jumped on the bandwagon.  If this is supposed to be a foundation, it should be in a proper compact.
#3 – The product itself.  I tried this as a foundation to see what would happen.  I looked like I was wearing Japanese Kabuki makeup.  It was awful.  I couldn’t understand how it could blend so nicely in small areas and be so very awful spread out all over my face.
In conclusion, it seems pretty obvious to me that this should not be used a foundation.  It’s a concealer for small areas.  It works well for that purpose and when used in that capacity, the small tube should last for some time.

I paid $21.39 for this box and the retail value came out to $52 and the maven value was $41.60. I thought both items were excellent quality and definitely a step above normal drug store brands.  I’d recommend buying them on sale from Julep since I find their normal retail/maven pricetags to be a little high.  If you use the code MATCHPOINT you can save $20 off a $50 or more order, so you can snag these at a serious discount.  I ended up paying a little over $10 for each item, so I feel like I got a great value.

Julep Maven: May 2017: Sun Crush

I know it’s been oh so quiet over here, but my plans to clone myself so that one Lisa could go to my day job, another could work on my house, while a third could handle my book promotion, so that I could do my blogging just didn’t pan out. I have managed to sneak out some time to get back to my boxes and soon I will have an actual place to write and take pictures instead of a room full of boxes and junk.

Because my budget is super tight with the renovation of my shack, er house, I skipped Julep boxes for March and April.
In May, I decided to snag a Maven box when Julep featured their Sun Crush collection.
This set brought back some summer favorites like Julep’s sea salt spray, mint pedi cream and sunscreen along with some cheerful new summer polishes.
On to my box…

 MY CUSTOMIZABLE MAVEN BOX

No Excuses – Invisible Sunscreen Gel
(Retail $28.00/Maven Price: $22.40)
Verdict: Hit!
Description: “A completely transparent, fast-absorbing face sunscreen in an essence-gel base that delivers Broad Spectrum SPF 40 protection from UVA/UVB rays. This lightweight gel goes on smoothly and dries quickly to a satin finish, making it perfect to wear under makeup.”
Julep actually introduced this last summer, but couldn’t actually get it out to customers.  I had ordered it then, but wasn’t able to try it out.  What I really like about this sunscreen is that it feels nice going on.  It never has that awful stinging feeling sunscreen get can when you start sweating.  It does give you a dewy complexion so if you want to look more matte, than top it with a touch of powder.  I used this as a pale redhead and didn’t burn so it seems pretty effective to me.

Don’t Leave Your Brows At Home
(Retail $16.00/Maven Price: $12.80)
Verdict: Love!
Color Description: Warm Brown
“Two-in-one tool with brow powder and an angled brush to fill in and define your brows.”
I’ve ordered this product many times, I didn’t bother to take it out or swatch it, since you’ve seen it before.  I’ve tried other brow products but Julep’s is hands down my favorite.  It’s easy to apply and stays put.  My only beef, besides the stupid name (seriously Julep, you need to stop with that nonsense) is I’d love to see a shade with a bit of red for us redheads. Both “warm brown” and “cool brown” can work for me, but I think something with a little red too might be even better.

Thin Iridescent Holo Nail Tape
(Retail ???/Maven Price: ???)
Verdict: Like
I had room in my maven box for something small so I added on this nail tape.  At some point I will have my studio finished and I will then actually attempt some fun nail art.  I have no idea how much this costs since you can’t buy it on the Julep site.

As is par for the course these days, I went really practical with my box.  I’ve been hoarding Jules so I got this box for free!  Excluding the tape which I don’t have a value on, this box came out to a retail cost of $52 and a maven cost of $41.60. I use both the items regularly so I’m super happy with my choices. The best thing about Julep’s subscription is the options it gives you to customize or skip.  If you’re like me and you regularly use their products, it’s great to have an option each month to add on what you need at a greatly reduced price.  As a maven you also get lower prices on all Julep products and free shipping.  If you fall in love with any Julep products that you’re going to use regularly, consider signing up for a Maven box.  It’s easy to skip months where you don’t need anything, and when you do, you can grab your favorites at an awesome discount.

Color Description: Charcoal Matte
“A waterproof eye pencil with the formula of a gel eyeliner that glides on smoothly without tugging or skipping. Sets in 30 seconds and provides 10+ hours of wear. Ophthalmologist tested.”
Julep’s eyeliners go on so smoothly and have excellent staying power.  I’ve become determined to collect all the shades.  Both of these are excellent staples that are perfect for everyday use.  The clay is a bit more understated and nice for those natural makeup looks.  The trick to these pencils is to be sure to sharpen them before each use.

I paid $21.39 and got two eyeliners I can use every day, a really pretty Spring polish and some fun nail stickers.  The retail value came out to $46, while the maven value was $36.80.  That’s even better than drugstore prices and these products are superior to anything I’ve tried from my local CVS.

To stick to my budget, I’ve skipped the last couple Maven boxes, but I did take one for May and I’ll have that review soon, so be sure to check back.

I love the shimmery iridescent polishes and I wish my budget would have allowed me to pick up a few more shades.  I’m interested to see if I love the hydrating oil as much as the cleansing oil, but for $21.39 for all three products, it was worth taking a gamble on.  The retail cost of this box came out to $64, while the maven cost was $51.20.  Overall, I feel like I got a great deal. I’d pay more for drugstore products that aren’t as unique and don’t have quite as nice packaging.

I’ve been searching for a great everyday pink – something to pair with a simple cat eye. This color was almost perfect, it leans just a touch too yellow for my complexion.  The formula is great though and goes on matte without over-drying your lips.  I don’t get 12 hours out of it, but it’s definitely more durable than a lot of my other lip products.

While I still haven’t found the perfect everyday matte lip shade, I still thought the lip products were quite nice.  As I mentioned, Julep has a really great formula and I hope they continue to make more shades.  The shatter stickers are fun and great for folks who aren’t adept at nail art, but still want to try something different.  Excluding the cost of the shatter stickers, the retail value of this box was $40 and the maven value was $32.  I paid $21.39 and I think I got my money’s worth.  Even excluding the stickers, that’s like paying $10 per lip product, which is basically akin to drugstore pricing  Personally, I feel the “It’s Whipped” products have superior packaging and formula to  anything I can find in my local Rite Aid.

Evergreen Shimmer: Forest Green Shimmer

Verdict: Hit!
These colors are so lovely it’s hard to pick a favorite from the bunch.  The pearl is a great highlight shade that you can use with other eyeshadows in your collection, or just in the inner corner of your eye for that extra bit of pop.  I found the burgundy to be unique and surprisingly wearable and the midnight blue is great for a smoky eye that isn’t too Goth.  I was concerned that the copper shimmer might be too warm for my cool skin tone, but it’s still quite wearable.   The gunmetal is a classic that I reach for everyday and the violet is a really fun, unexpected pop of color.  These eyeshadow sticks come with a blending tip at one end, but I personally don’t use it.  In order for it blend and not erase the product, you need to first saturate it with shadow.  Instead I use my fingers or a brush to blend, and reserve the tip for erasing if I’ve put too much on.  I find myself reaching for eyeshadow sticks during my work week because they are so fast to apply and there’s no need to fuss with brushes.  If you like minimal effort in your makeup application, consider giving these a try.

Julep Maven: October 2016: Dark & Stormy Nights!

I finished my Christmas cards and made some headway on my manuscript edits, so I’ve finally earned some time to chat with you about boxes.  Today I’m reviewing my October Julep Maven box.  October’s theme was “Dark & Stormy Nights” and brought some lovely dark shades, a free holographic topcoat and a product favorite.

Julep Maven: September 2016: Cheers to Five Years!

Chugging through my backlog of boxes, I realized I’m overdue for a Julep Maven box review.  September’s theme was “Cheers to Five Years!” to celebrate Julep’s anniversary.  The collection featured some cute makeup kits and an array of cheerful polishes.

When Pencil Met Gel – Galaxy Black Shimmer
When Pencil Met Gel – Deep Sea Foam Shimmer
When Pencil Met Gel – Gilded Gold Shimmer
When Pencil Met Gel – Lilac Shimmer
When Pencil Met Gel – Ultraviolet
Verdict: Love!
I love Julep eye gliders because they go on so easily and have great staying power.  As soon as  I saw the fun colors, I knew I had to grab this set.  The shimmer in the black really shows up, and the sea foam shade has a great boho vibe.  The gold is more of an antique tone and feels art deco.  The lilac is my least favorite of the bunch as it reads a bit faded.  The Ultraviolet is a fun shade that feels kind of 80s (but in a good way).  This is a fun set to play with and while I wouldn’t pay the retail price of $40, I think it’s worth at least $18.  Julep has tons of great holiday sales so keep this in mind if you see a great coupon code.

SEPTEMBER FREEBIE!
You’ll note that there’s no picture here.  Why?  Well, it’s another one of those unfortunately consistent Julep screw-ups.  As part of Julep’s anniversary, they promised to include a free makeup bag in every box…except of course they didn’t.  People had to ask about it and when they did Julep said the bags arrived not up to their standards and so they didn’t include them.  No mention of including them at any other time.  I believe people who complained to Julep might have gotten a free item or a coupon code, but they didn’t offer that to everyone affected–you had to call and complain.  I didn’t bother since it was a free item and I didn’t really need another makeup bag, but this constantly promising things they can’t deliver needs to stop.

OVERALL:

Verdict:
Good
This box would have been a “love” if not for the makeup bag fiasco.  I paid $21.39 and got a great little eyeliner set and a pretty polish.  The retail value on these items is $54 and the maven value is $32.  The eyeliner set features a lot of colors I didn’t already own and that I think will look great for the holidays.  It’s fun to experiment with bright eye colors and a mini kit is a great way to try lots of things without committing to the cost of one full size product.

MY CUSTOMIZABLE MAVEN BOX

Sadly, it seems these days we can’t get a month without another Julep issue.  This collection offered an invisible sunscreen gel called “No Excuses”.  It did not live up to its name because like Julep’s other sun-related products, it was delayed and didn’t come in this box.  Julep did go big on making it up to mavens, by sending those who ordered the sunblock (myself included) a $50 credit for their site.  That seemed like a very generous solution and my only issue was that there was an expiration date to the credit that wasn’t clearly listed.  If not for all my Facebook friends who are mavens I might have missed out on using mine.

The Missing Product:
no_excuses
No Excuses Invisible Sunscreen Gel

(Retail $22.00/Maven Price: $17.60)
Description: “completely transparent, fast-absorbing face sunscreen in an essence-gel base that delivers Broad Spectrum SPF 40 protection from UVA/UVB rays.  This lightweight gel goes on smoothly and dries quickly to a satin finish, making it perfect to wear under makeup.  To use: Apply liberally 15 minutes before sun exposure. Use a water resistant sunscreen if swimming or sweating. Reapply at least every two hours.”
Verdict: Isn’t it ironic, don’t think?
Seems like this product is full of excuses.  It only became available for sale, fairly recently so I opted not to order this since my Fall/Winter sunblock needs are pretty well met.  This product was also not available for the Canadian mavens at all.  While I appreciate Julep’s ambition, they need to focus on doing the things they can do very well, rather than attempting things they can’t truly pull off with the resources they have.

So this box is a tough one to calculate.  If I’d gotten the box I ordered (with the sunblock) it would have had a retail value of $56 and a maven value of $44.80.  For the retail polish prices + my $50 credit, I got a $78 value.  With the maven value + store credit, we come out to $72.40.  I used Jules I’d saved up for this box so I ended up getting it for free.  The only reason this box doesn’t have a “hit” rating is because of Julep’s disorganization. I appreciate that they try to make it right, but problems have turned into the rule rather than the exception, and that needs to change. I wish I could tell you that Julep’s problems stopped in August, but there’s more Julep gossip to share in my next reviews, so be sure to come back.

july-2016-julep-polish

July offered some really pretty ocean inspired polish shades and Julep’s brand new SPF sheer lip butters.  Unfortunately, there was a controversy to mar this new launch.  When mavens got their boxes, the lip sheers were set to expire in just one month.  Julep clarified that the product itself wouldn’t expire, but the SPF in it would no longer have full potency after the expiration date.  As you can imagine that didn’t go over so well since many folks (like myself) bought these because they thought they’d be great for wearing in the sun.  And who finishes an entire lipstick in a month?

Julep offered refunds when contacted and I ended up getting my whole box comped which was really nice of them to do.

So enough controversy let’s try out the products.

Sheer Lip Butters

Verdict: Hit!
The only thing wrong with these lip products is that the SPF expires.  The packaging on these is feels luxe and high end and the sheerness can be built up for more or less coverage.  If you’re someone who wants to try out brighter shades but is intimidated, these would be the perfect option to ease you into color.  The sheerness is so much more wearable than something like a matte liquid lipstick.  These also feel great on your lips.  If Julep can release these without the SPF, they will fly off the shelves like hotcakes. (Do hotcakes really fly off shelves?  I’ve always wondered.)

I was originally charged $28.87 for this box and the retail value came out to $72.00 with a maven value of $57.60.  Because of the SPF situation I received the box for free.  Now if the lip products hadn’t had an expired component I would have been really happy with paying the $28.87.  I’d also gladly have bought more lip butters.  They are a perfect everyday product and the packaging feels very durable. I hope that Julep can formulate them without the problematic SPF component as I’d love to order more.   I wish I could tell you that this was the last Julep controversy this year, but there are some more coming, so be sure to check back for the gossip.

Do you like SPF in your lip products?  Why or why?
