Julep Maven: December 2016: This Way to the Soirée

In my game of review catch-up, today’s lineup has Julep’s This Way to the Soirée December collection which included a bunch of new matte lip shades. Despite my overflowing makeup box, I don’t have many matte lip products so I was excited to nab a few in my box.  If you’d like to try out Julep for yourself, be sure to check out the coupons and offers below.

It’s Whipped – Pillow Talk – Matte Lip Mousse

(Retail $20.00/Maven Price: $16.00)
Verdict: So close to perfect
Description: “A weightless matte lip color that lasts all day and never feels dry. A super-pigmented formula provides saturated color for up to 12 hours of comfortable wear.”
Color: “Victorian Pink Matte”
I’ve been searching for a great everyday pink – something to pair with a simple cat eye. This color was almost perfect, it leans just a touch too yellow for my complexion.  The formula is great though and goes on matte without over-drying your lips.  I don’t get 12 hours out of it, but it’s definitely more durable than a lot of my other lip products.

It’s Whipped – Pillow Talk – Matte Lip Mousse

(Retail $20.00/Maven Price: $16.00)
Verdict: Hit!
Description: “A weightless matte lip color that lasts all day and never feels dry. A super-pigmented formula provides saturated color for up to 12 hours of comfortable wear.”
Color: “Femme Fuchsia Matte”
I thought I’d take a chance on this one and it is so much lovelier in person than on the screen.  It’s a saturated shade that can go glam or laid back.  I also think it would work well for a variety of skin tones.

Verdict: Like!
While I still haven’t found the perfect everyday matte lip shade, I still thought the lip products were quite nice.  As I mentioned, Julep has a really great formula and I hope they continue to make more shades.  The shatter stickers are fun and great for folks who aren’t adept at nail art, but still want to try something different.  Excluding the cost of the shatter stickers, the retail value of this box was $40 and the maven value was $32.  I paid $21.39 and I think I got my money’s worth.  Even excluding the stickers, that’s like paying $10 per lip product, which is basically akin to drugstore pricing  Personally, I feel the “It’s Whipped” products have superior packaging and formula to  anything I can find in my local Rite Aid.

Midnight Blue: Deep Navy Sheen
Burgundy Shimmer: Port Wine Shimmer
Evergreen Shimmer: Forest Green Shimmer
Gunmetal Shimmer: Pewter Shimmer
Copper Shimmer: Cinnamon Shimmer
Verdict: Hit!
These colors are so lovely it’s hard to pick a favorite from the bunch.  The pearl is a great highlight shade that you can use with other eyeshadows in your collection, or just in the inner corner of your eye for that extra bit of pop.  I found the burgundy to be unique and surprisingly wearable and the midnight blue is great for a smoky eye that isn’t too Goth.  I was concerned that the copper shimmer might be too warm for my cool skin tone, but it’s still quite wearable.   The gunmetal is a classic that I reach for everyday and the violet is a really fun, unexpected pop of color.  These eyeshadow sticks come with a blending tip at one end, but I personally don’t use it.  In order for it blend and not erase the product, you need to first saturate it with shadow.  Instead I use my fingers or a brush to blend, and reserve the tip for erasing if I’ve put too much on.  I find myself reaching for eyeshadow sticks during my work week because they are so fast to apply and there’s no need to fuss with brushes.  If you like minimal effort in your makeup application, consider giving these a try.

I’ve been saving up jules (rewards you get for your maven sub box orders) and used it to cover the cost of my maven box, so I only paid for my add-on polish.  That brought my out of pocket costs to just $7.48 for all the items you see!  According to my calculations, this box had a retail value of $140 and a maven value of $112 – so not too shabby. Those eyeshadow 101s are really lovely and the Keiko polish is a glamorous update on a neutral shade.  Definitely one of my favorite Julep boxes to date!

Julep Maven: September 2016: Cheers to Five Years!

Chugging through my backlog of boxes, I realized I’m overdue for a Julep Maven box review.  September’s theme was “Cheers to Five Years!” to celebrate Julep’s anniversary.  The collection featured some cute makeup kits and an array of cheerful polishes.

Verdict: Love!
I love Julep eye gliders because they go on so easily and have great staying power.  As soon as  I saw the fun colors, I knew I had to grab this set.  The shimmer in the black really shows up, and the sea foam shade has a great boho vibe.  The gold is more of an antique tone and feels art deco.  The lilac is my least favorite of the bunch as it reads a bit faded.  The Ultraviolet is a fun shade that feels kind of 80s (but in a good way).  This is a fun set to play with and while I wouldn’t pay the retail price of $40, I think it’s worth at least $18.  Julep has tons of great holiday sales so keep this in mind if you see a great coupon code.

SEPTEMBER FREEBIE!
You’ll note that there’s no picture here.  Why?  Well, it’s another one of those unfortunately consistent Julep screw-ups.  As part of Julep’s anniversary, they promised to include a free makeup bag in every box…except of course they didn’t.  People had to ask about it and when they did Julep said the bags arrived not up to their standards and so they didn’t include them.  No mention of including them at any other time.  I believe people who complained to Julep might have gotten a free item or a coupon code, but they didn’t offer that to everyone affected–you had to call and complain.  I didn’t bother since it was a free item and I didn’t really need another makeup bag, but this constantly promising things they can’t deliver needs to stop.

This box would have been a “love” if not for the makeup bag fiasco.  I paid $21.39 and got a great little eyeliner set and a pretty polish.  The retail value on these items is $54 and the maven value is $32.  The eyeliner set features a lot of colors I didn’t already own and that I think will look great for the holidays.  It’s fun to experiment with bright eye colors and a mini kit is a great way to try lots of things without committing to the cost of one full size product.

Sadly, it seems these days we can’t get a month without another Julep issue.  This collection offered an invisible sunscreen gel called “No Excuses”.  It did not live up to its name because like Julep’s other sun-related products, it was delayed and didn’t come in this box.  Julep did go big on making it up to mavens, by sending those who ordered the sunblock (myself included) a $50 credit for their site.  That seemed like a very generous solution and my only issue was that there was an expiration date to the credit that wasn’t clearly listed.  If not for all my Facebook friends who are mavens I might have missed out on using mine.

The Missing Product:

No Excuses Invisible Sunscreen Gel

(Retail $22.00/Maven Price: $17.60)
Description: “completely transparent, fast-absorbing face sunscreen in an essence-gel base that delivers Broad Spectrum SPF 40 protection from UVA/UVB rays.  This lightweight gel goes on smoothly and dries quickly to a satin finish, making it perfect to wear under makeup.  To use: Apply liberally 15 minutes before sun exposure. Use a water resistant sunscreen if swimming or sweating. Reapply at least every two hours.”
Verdict: Isn’t it ironic, don’t think?
Seems like this product is full of excuses.  It only became available for sale, fairly recently so I opted not to order this since my Fall/Winter sunblock needs are pretty well met.  This product was also not available for the Canadian mavens at all.  While I appreciate Julep’s ambition, they need to focus on doing the things they can do very well, rather than attempting things they can’t truly pull off with the resources they have.

So this box is a tough one to calculate.  If I’d gotten the box I ordered (with the sunblock) it would have had a retail value of $56 and a maven value of $44.80.  For the retail polish prices + my $50 credit, I got a $78 value.  With the maven value + store credit, we come out to $72.40.  I used Jules I’d saved up for this box so I ended up getting it for free.  The only reason this box doesn’t have a “hit” rating is because of Julep’s disorganization. I appreciate that they try to make it right, but problems have turned into the rule rather than the exception, and that needs to change. I wish I could tell you that Julep’s problems stopped in August, but there’s more Julep gossip to share in my next reviews, so be sure to come back.

july-2016-julep-polish

July offered some really pretty ocean inspired polish shades and Julep’s brand new SPF sheer lip butters.  Unfortunately, there was a controversy to mar this new launch.  When mavens got their boxes, the lip sheers were set to expire in just one month.  Julep clarified that the product itself wouldn’t expire, but the SPF in it would no longer have full potency after the expiration date.  As you can imagine that didn’t go over so well since many folks (like myself) bought these because they thought they’d be great for wearing in the sun.  And who finishes an entire lipstick in a month?

Julep offered refunds when contacted and I ended up getting my whole box comped which was really nice of them to do.

So enough controversy let’s try out the products.

Verdict: Hit!
The only thing wrong with these lip products is that the SPF expires.  The packaging on these is feels luxe and high end and the sheerness can be built up for more or less coverage.  If you’re someone who wants to try out brighter shades but is intimidated, these would be the perfect option to ease you into color.  The sheerness is so much more wearable than something like a matte liquid lipstick.  These also feel great on your lips.  If Julep can release these without the SPF, they will fly off the shelves like hotcakes. (Do hotcakes really fly off shelves?  I’ve always wondered.)

I was originally charged $28.87 for this box and the retail value came out to $72.00 with a maven value of $57.60.  Because of the SPF situation I received the box for free.  Now if the lip products hadn’t had an expired component I would have been really happy with paying the $28.87.  I’d also gladly have bought more lip butters.  They are a perfect everyday product and the packaging feels very durable. I hope that Julep can formulate them without the problematic SPF component as I’d love to order more.   I wish I could tell you that this was the last Julep controversy this year, but there are some more coming, so be sure to check back for the gossip.

Do you like SPF in your lip products?  Why or why?

June Collection

Verdict: On the Fence
Description: “Color description: Golden Amber Shimmer  A waterproof eye pencil with the formula of a gel eyeliner that glides on smoothly without tugging or skipping. Sets in 30 seconds and provides 10+ hours of wear. Ophthalmologist tested.”
Julep eyeliners have a great formula so I tend to jump at trying any of the new colors.  This one is pretty and goes on smooth (just like the other shades) but I’m not sure I can pull it off.  It’s going to require some experimenting.

Shower Gel
Rethink Your Shower – Hydrating Body Cleansing Oil

(Retail $38.00/Maven Price: $30.40)
Verdict: Hit!
Description: “An ultra-hydrating, lightweight body cleansing oil that reaches deep to dissolve impurities and prep skin for exfoliation, then rinses away to reveal silky, nourished skin.”
I really like this shower gel, it’s hydrating while still giving your skin a clean feeling, and the scent is light and fresh.  I do think it’s quite overpriced (even at a maven discount) so I like to add this to my box when I need more.  If you enjoy Julep products, the customizable subscription is a great way to stock up at a great discount.

Description: “Specially formulated for Julep nail colors, these drops magically restore your favorite polish to its ideal consistency so you get more out of every bottle.”
Folks have been begging for this product forever and I’m so glad Julep finally caved.  If you’ve got a giant polish collection, you may have bottles you don’t use for a while and they get a bit thick.  A touch of thinner will make them perfectly useable again.  As a PSA, don’t use acetone to thin your polishes.  It will ruin them!  Just grab a bottle of polish thinner instead.  A little goes a long way and a bottle will last you quite some time.

July Irish Taste Club & 10% Off Code!

Today I’ve got some more fun with food with my review of the July Irish Taste Club box plus an extra special coupon for 10% off when you sign up (use code therapy10).

If you remember from my last review, Irish Taste Box, features sweet and savory treats all the way from Ireland.  For details on the pricing jump down to The Backstory.

The lovely box included a handwritten note to subscribers, which was a thoughtful touch.  Apparently this is the first box for subscribers, so I’m assuming my previous one was a trial run.
Box Open Box Personal Note
Now let’s get to the goodies!
Granola
Maria Lucia Bakes Granola Cranberry Coconut and Chia Seed Granola

Description: “We knew when we tasted Maria Lucia Bakes Granola that it was a perfect example of its kind.  We were determined to have it in our boxes.  She has just won best cereal in Ireland at the Irish Quality Food and Drink Awards with her cranberry Coconut and Chia Seed Granola, which is our favorite flavor, but we will offer the whole range over the coming months.”
Verdict:  Like!
This was a really nice granola chock full of healthy things, I didn’t find it all that different from what we have available in the US, but still good. I’m taking it to work to sprinkle in my morning yogurt or oatmeal.  This is quite a large box so this should last me awhile.

Sauce
Ballymaloe Original Sauce

Description: “????.”
Verdict: “Couldna been so beautiful…couldna been so right…”
According to my insert, this was supposed to be “Ed Hicks Bacon Jam”, (Bacon Jam!!!!!) so I don’t have any info on the Original Sauce.    Instead it’s tomato sauce?  Which I think might be what we think of in the US as ketchup.  I am sort of a ketchup addict (although my heart belongs to Heinz) so theoretically this would be a good addition for me, but I can’t keep thinking that I missed out on bacon jam. Mmm, bacon jam.  It looks like this is available at Wegman’s so if you’re lucky enough to be close to one, you can try this out for yourself.

Sour Cream Chips
Keogh’s Shamrock and Sour Cream Crisps

Description: “Everyone loves crisps and the Shamrock and Sour Cream variety from Keogh’s. The guys make them on their farm in North Dublin.  We applaud that he producer grows the potatoes that make the crisps and we really like the flavor combinations.  Our first box just had to have a little shamrock.”
Verdict:  Hit!
There is never anything wrong with sour cream and onion chips.  I gave these to my boyfriend (because I’m the awesomiest girlfriend ever) and he enjoyed them quite a bit.  Unsurprisingly, Irish folks know how to make a tasty potato.

OatsTea
Foods of Athenry Just Oats Flapjacks
& SD Bells Belfast Tea
Description: “The flapjacks from the Foods of Athenry are part of a massive range of oat-based goodies form the multi-award winning Galway producer.  We think they’re great for kids/ lunchboxes and to have the cup of the iconic SD Bells Belfast Brew tea.  They’re also good crumbled up over fruit and baked as a Crisp.  SD Bells supplied the Titanic with dry goods including tea!  The company is Ireland’s oldest Tea Importer and Coffee Roaster.  The Belfast Brew cuppa is a perfect blend example of Indian Orthodox Leaf.  It’s strong and that’s how we Irish like our tea.  It’s best taken with a little milk.”.
Verdict:  Miss for the Oats, Hit for the Tea!
I found the Flapjack treats to be a bit dry and not as flavorful as I would like, but the insert included a recipe for a granola fruit crisp, so I may try it out in that capacity instead.  I didn’t get a chance to try the tea yet, but I love that it’s the oldest tea importer and actually supplied the Titanic.  I think this will be a lovely treat as the weather cools and we head toward Fall.

Oil
Newgrange Gold Rapeseed Oil

Description: “Rapeseed oil is Ireland’s answer to olive oil and some say it’s even better for you.  This one from Newgrange Gold is just that-liquid gold in a bottle.  It’s so versatile.  You can cook with it and use it in salad dressings. It also takes on flavor really well, so add some chili and garlic or basil or rosemary….We could go on.”
Verdict:  Like
I enjoy cooking so I always love getting seasonings and oils from other countries to try out in my dishes.  I think I might try this out in a Mediterranean style orzo salad.

Truffles
Skellig Chocolate Company Citrus Truffles

Description: “Finally, we had to have some chocolate.  The Skelligs Chocolate Company in Kerry is one of the best in the country.  We just can’t stop eating these White Chocolate Truffles with sharp hits of lemon zest, but don’t’ worry, there’s plenty of stock.  We just know there will be repeat requests.”
Verdict:  Like/Gift
I like that there was a dessert component and I brought this with me to a summer BBQ to share.  Some folks loved it, others thought it had a sort of lemon pledge vibe.  I thought the citrus flavor was a lovely addition for summer and a unique truffle to offer.

I received this box for free, but it would have cost me $44.  I think that considering that most of these products are very difficult to find in the States, it’s a solid value.  I am super disappointed though that I didn’t receive the bacon jam that was listed.  I’d also love to see more recipes and uses for the ingredients (there were only two and one was to be paired with the missing bacon jam).  It will be interesting to see the unique items this sub offers in the coming months.

Seattle Chocolates – Birthday Cake Batter

(2.5 oz Bar: $3.50)
Description: “Seattle Chocolates created this wonderful treat, which tastes like vanilla frosted yellow cake. With colorful confetti pieces mixed into the milk chocolate, it’s even more exciting!”.
Verdict:  Hit!
I love birthday cake batter treats, so it must have been a moment of insanity (or true love) when I gave this one to my boyfriend.

Ethereal
Ethereal Confections

Verdict: Hit!
I couldn’t find this exact bar, but Chococurb does offer one for sale with Macadamia nuts, raspberry and lime kaffir.

Menakao
Menakao Chocolate – 44% Milk Chocolate with Madagascan Vanilla

(Bar: $7.99)
Description: “Similar to coffee beans, the ones for cacao obtain many unique characteristics based on where they are cultivated. This might explain how every bar by Menakao has a unique taste of its own. With notes of vanilla and butter, this caramel-esque bar exemplifies the acidic and fruity flavors that distinguish Madagascan cocoa.”
Verdict:  Miss
This one had such lovely packaging that I was super excited for it, but sadly it tasted a bit bitter to me. I’m sure someone else would enjoy it, but it just wasn’t to my taste.

Mokkacino
TCHO – Mokaccino + Blue Bottle Coffee Bar

(2 Oz Bar: $5.95)
Description: “Warm, roasted nuttiness and complex, dried fruit notes from freshly roasted Blue Bottle coffee blend seamlessly with the dense caramel and cocoa notes in our SeriousMilk chocolate. Named Best Flavored Milk Chocolate in America by the International Chocolate Awards.”
Verdict:  Hit!
I loved the flavor on this one – just the right mix of coffee and chocolate.

Noire Gingembre
Chocolat Dolfin – Noire Gingembre

(Estimated Retail Bar size 2.47 oz. Bar $5.99)
Verdict:  Like
This may be the fanciest sounding thing I’ve ever eaten.  Chococurb’s store didn’t include this flavor, but they have some other options including a Pear & Almond one that sounds ah-may-zing.  I’m not a huge fan of ginger mixed with chocolate, so this bar wasn’t my favorite but it was still quite lovely.

There’s something about getting a box of chocolate that brings a smile to your face.  This is a tiny box of chocolates, but I think the unique, high quality offerings match the $10 pricetag.  The nano box option offers you a way to indulge in a monthly treat without going overboard, and it makes a great little gift for someone you love that’s got a sweet tooth.

I also appreciate that Chococurb offers the option to purchase most of the items from their online store.  So many times you fall in love with a unique confection from a sub box and then just can’t find it anywhere.  The one thing I’d love to see added to this sub is an info card that lists all the chocolates included with a description of the flavors.  The included card gave me info about Chococurb, but I had to do some searching on their site to find out about the chocolates themselves.

Julep Maven: May 2016 Rainbow Brights! Plus 20% Off!

Before we get into the May Box, there’s some Julep gossip to dish.  Beauty box controversies seem to be the buzz this summer, as Julep, like Birchbox has had some bad press.  Their July box collection featured SPF lip sheers that mavens had been totally pumped up about trying.  They arrived stamped with an expiration date of August 31st.  Cue the many confused social media posts to Julep.  It turns out that one of the SPF ingredients will start to be less effective, so the product itself is safe to use, but not for sun protection. In addition, Canadian mavens couldn’t receive the products at all due to regulations regarding the SPF ingredients.  As you can imagine there were many angry customers.  Julep offered refunds or replacements to folks that contacted them, so they did their best to make it right.  The products themselves actually got a lot of positive response, so hopefully Julep will be able to re-formulate the product without SPF.  I got two in my July box so I’ll be able to tell you all about them soon.

May’s collection offered a rainbow of polish and some new lip oils.  Because I have a ginormous polish collection, all of these shades were similar to colors I already own so I opted to try out one of the lip oils and stock up on another product.

This oil left behind a really pretty lip stain type look.  It felt quite moisturizing and I was surprised at the staying power it had.  This is a nice product for summer when  you want a little color on your lips, but don’t want the stickiness of gloss or the heaviness of cream lipstick.
