Orglamix Glam Box: May 2017 Tea Party + 25% Off

Today it’s time to work through one of  the many awesome boxes I have piled up, since I’m going through the literal boxes piled up all over my house.  Moving sucks, but you never really remember how bad it is until you actually have to do it again.  Plus this is all going on while I try to get folks to review my new book, “The Ice Maiden’s Tale”.  I’m not sure what to start bribing people with since I have no money.  I have some beauty products though.  Do you think offering moisturizer and hair oil would work?

Anyway, it’s time to forget my responsibilities for a moment and have some fun with one of my favorite boxes.
The May Orglamix Glam Box had a “Tea Party” theme.  “It seems like a new beauty craze crops up practically every day, but there’s a reason some have staying power.  And in the case of tea, as a beauty staple, that staying power has lasted a very very long time.  Tea is the world’s most ancient remedy.  It was discovered thousands of years ago in China, where people cultivated its use as a medicine, as a ritual, as an art form.  Turns out the world’s most popular beverage has plenty of beauty perks.  Tea makes for a great ingredient because it has wonderful benefits for the skin.  It’s packed with powerful antioxidants, as well as anti-inflammatory and anti-aging benefits, plus it’s effective and gentle, making it perfect for all skin types.”

If you’d like to try out a box of vegan, cruelty free natural beauty products for yourself use the coupon code VEGAN to save 25%.

Multi Tea Organic Facial Cleanser
(Estimated Retail: $9.00)
Description: ”Organic green tea, white tea and rooibos tea, organic neem, DMAE, vitamins, and organic aloe vera make up this mild cleanser that won’t strip your skin of its natural oils or alter is pH….”
Verdict: Like!
This cleanser includes natural oils so it’s right up my alley.  I’m interested to see how adding tea to the mix effects the cleanser.

Rooibos Organic Eye Cream
(Estimated Retail: $18.00)
Description: “Rooibos tea is a red tea made from a South African red bush and it’s known to have even more antioxidant benefits than green tea.  Enhanced with hyaluronic acid, clanedula, rooibos, pomegranate extracts and evening primrose, this eye cream diminishes the appearance of puffs, under eye circles…”
Verdict: Love!
I love eye creams because even when I get really lazy about my skin care routine, I can usually stick to at least using an eye cream.  If you do nothing besides wear sun screen and apply a good eye cream regularly, you’ll really make a huge difference in how your skin ages.  I’m excited to try this out and love the generous size.

Sweet Tea Liplux Lip Tint
(Estimated Retail: $12.00)
Description: “A beautiful delicate pink, this lip tint adds lot so hydration and shine to your lips.  Made with coconut, canola, olive and grapeseed oils, this rose gold lip tint is delicately flavored with sweet tea…”
Verdict: Not quite right for me.
First, let me just say this feels amazing going on and it gives a really saturated color.  The only problem is for me it’s orange on my skin tone, not pink.  But this would look amazing on somebody with tan or olive skin. I can really see it giving that bronze JLo type glow.

Tea for Two Natural Eyeshadow
(Estimated Retail: $12.50)
Description: ”…Our golden metal crush eye shadow is electric, made from pigment-saturated powders that apply flawlessly dry or wet.”
Verdict: Hit!
This shade has a really pretty shimmer that is lovely during summer.  A little goes a long way.

Lemongrass Bath Bomb
(Estimated Retail: $5.00)
Description: ”…Take a dip with this zippy green and yellow fizzer to feel instantly energized!  Next time you’re feeling sluggish, simply pop one into your bath for a sunny dose of invigorating lemon-grass, bergamot essential oils and mesmerizing vibrant green waters.  Organic shea butter leaves you with soft, hydrated skin, while good ol’ fashioned baking soda cleanses and keeps you feeling fresh..”
Verdict: Like
There will come a day where I will have time to actually sit in a bathtub and enjoy my giant stockpile of bath products.  I’m sure I’ll enjoy this bathbomb then.

OVERALL
Verdict:
Like
I receive this for free in order to review it, but the regular cost is $29 and the estimated retail value came out to $56.50.  That’s a bit lower than past Orglamix boxes, but still a good value.  This had a nice summery feel and I think all the products would appeal to most subscribers.  The only reason it’s not a “love” for me is because the lip tint wasn’t a match for my complexion.  The product itself though feels so nice and goes on so smoothly that I’d love to try another in a different shade.

Play by Sephora: May 2017

It’s been a rough week.  I’m not quite at the point where I can articulate something clear and thoughtful about the terrorism that shook Charlottesville.  All I can say is that we’ve beaten hate before and we will do it again, because despite everything, most people are good. (Although sometimes I know it doesn’t seem like it.) We just have to stand together and help each other, and most of all never, ever, ever let hate be the loudest voice in the room.

Now, I know sub boxes are especially frivolous at this time, but I refuse to let terror stop me from doing the things I want to do.  So today I’m going to review my damn May Play by Sephora subscription and keep on keeping on.

If you want to see my box reveals as soon as I get them, follow me on Instagram for real time spoilers.
May’s theme was “The Rising Stars” – “This month we’re taking you on a tour of cult favorites, hard-to-find formulas, and one-of-a-kind brands that are making their mark.”
This month we got a super cute plastic pouch.  Great for tucking in some toiletries when you go to the beach, pool or waterpark.

NUDESTIX Magnetic Matte Lip Color in Greystone
(Full Size: $24.00)
Description: “A three-in-one matte lip stain, lip color, and lip liner that has a long-wearing, intensely pigmented formula in a bold, dep shade.”
Verdict: Like for Fall/Winter
I didn’t swatch this one because the color seems way more suited to Fall/Winter so I’m going to save it for then.  It’s described as “griege” shade and seems like a throwback to the 90s.  Even if it doesn’t work well with my pale complexion, I’ll have some fun playing around with it.

trèStiQue – Highlight & Perfect Multipurpose Stick  Maldives Luminescent
(Full Size: $34.00)
Description: “This silk-smooth gel highlighter stick Paris a barely-there, lightweight texture with a luminous champagne pink shimmer.
Verdict: Like
Champagne pinks usually work well with my complexion.  I have so much makeup open that I wanted to save this one, so I didn’t swatch it. Unlike the matte lipstick, this felt appropriate for summer.

SUNDAY RILEY – Ceramic Slip Clay Cleanser
(Full Size: $45.00)
Description: “Luxurious clay cleanser uses potent ingredients to minimize the appearance of pores and brighten for clear, balanced skin.”
Verdict: Like
Sunday Riley is one of those brands that bloggers adore and has quite a cult following.  It’s also pretty pricey, so I’m always glad to get some samples to try out.

Grande Cosmetics – GrandeLIPS Hydrating Lip Plumper in Clear
(Full Size: $27.00)
Description: “Clear gloss uses a patented hyaluronic acid-infused formula to visibly plump lips while also softening over time.”
Verdict: On the fence
I’m not usually a fan of “plumping” lip products, but I’m willing to give it a try.  I do like that it’s clear so you can pair it with your favorite lipstick or gloss.

Christophe Robin – Cleansing Purifying Scrub with Sea Salt
(Full Size: $53.00)
Description:”Cleanse, purify, and rebalance a sensitive or oily scalp with this soothing sea salt scrub that leaves hair soft and refreshed.”
Verdict: Love!
My scalp is one of my problem areas so getting a hair product to target that area is awesome.  I hope I don’t like this one too much since a full size is pretty pricey at $53.

This Month’s Perfume Pick:
MAISON MARGIELA – ’REPLICA’ Beach Walk (3.4 oz $126.00)
Description: “Transport yourself to sandy seaside memories with this radiant scent of bergamot, coconut milk, and lemon.”
Verdict: Finally!
The rare perfume that I can wear!  I love citrus scents so this was a nice surprise.

OVERALL

Verdict: Love!
This box was such a huge improvement over April’s.  I’ll use every product and there are lots of brands here that I haven’t tried before.   I also thought it had an excellent balance of products, although if I want to be nit-picky, I’d say they should have opted for a different makeup item rather than 2 lip products, and that the shade of the nudestix should have been more seasonally appropriate.  Still, this was a great box for $10, and Sephora still stands as my favorite budget beauty sub.

What type of lip colors do you wear and do you change them by season?

THE BACKSTORY

Daily Goodie Box – June 2017

Today I’ve got something great to get us through hump day.
A FREE box.  That’s right, I said free.
Daily Goodie Box will send you a box of free product samples.  All you need to do is sign up and then leave your reviews of the product on their site.  It’s that simple.  It’s subject to availability of course, but free is free.

Here’s our box…

Tiger Balm –  Pain Relieving Ointment
Verdict:  Useful, but small
Tiger balm is great when you’ve done something you’re probably not supposed to do and your muscles are making you pay for it.  I just wish the sample was a little bigger.

Prince of Peace – Original Ginger Honey Crystals
Verdict: Great for a cold
I’m not much into ginger beverages, but this sounds like something that would be perfect for when you catch some horrible subway flu.  The size is great for a sample.

Black Forest Organic –  Gummy Bears
Verdict:  You had me at gummy
I’ll be honest, if it’s fruit flavored and in gummy form, I’ll probably love it.  These were delicious, not quite as amazing as the Albanese gummies, but still quite good.

BiPro – Protein Water Berry Burst
Verdict:  Not my jam
I’m not really into the flavored “waters” and I try to stay away from drinks that have calories.  This had the type of flavor you’d expect from berry flavored water – a slightly synthetic, but mostly refreshing drink.

Crown Maple – Organic Maple Syrup
Verdict:  Love!
Organic maple syrup in an adorable glass bottle. Yes, please!
Coupon: Use code GOODIE25 for 25% off any product order.  Expires 8/31/2017.

VitaBath – Travel Size Body Wash
Verdict:  Hit!
Bodywash is a product that my household goes through pretty quickly so I’m always happy to try a new brand.  This one is sulfate and paraben free and comes in a variety of scents.  Mine is coconut which sounds perfect for summer.

BetterThanCoffee – Energy Bars
Verdict:  Not too bad
I’m not big on “energy” bars or drinks.  This one did have a more natural, hippy type flavor and texture.  It seemed like something that was good for you. (If that makes sense).

Pure Growth Organic – Snack Mix
Verdict:
  Decent
There’s nothing extraordinary about this mix.  It tastes just fine and I think kids will like it.

Goddess Garden – Mineral Removing Cleanser
Verdict:  Too small
I’m always up for trying out new organic beauty products, but I think this sample is just too small to get a real idea of whether you truly like this product or not.

OVERALL

Because this is a free box, I’m not going to give it an overall rating, but I found it to be a wonderful free box.  Most of the sizes are more than adequate to judge the products, and it has a nice mix of different types of things, including some brands you might not know about otherwise.  I also appreciate that it included a lot of organic and healthy options.  Definitely worth the five minutes it takes to sign up and the few minutes it takes to write a couple sentences about each item.

Have you ever tried any free sample product boxes? What did you think?

May 2017 Orangeglad & 10% off Coupon Code!

Okay it’s time to get back to boxes. To push us over the mid-week hump, I’ve got some sweet treats with my May review of Orangeglad, a monthly artisan dessert subscription.

If you’d like to try out one for yourself use my code ST10 for 10% off your order.

Lovely packaging as usual:

Rustic Bakery – Larkspur, CA
About the Company:
“So, the bakers scrambled to find a commercial kitchen space in their hometown of Novato, which they outgrew in the first week, struggling to keep up with more orders while working with a rolling pin and standard convection oven.  It wasn’t an around-the-clock effort.  Josh would mix all of the dough, and Carol would shape and bake the flatbreads.  As luck would have it, there was a wine bar in Larkspur with a fully outfitted, but unused bakery in the back.  Carol and Josh signed a lease, and the crowds converged the same day.  Two days later they purchased the entire space , turning the wine bar into a café serving coffee and croissants alongside the crackers….As far as we know, it’s the only handmade sourdough flatbread anywhere…”

Pecan Shortbread
($2.99 Each)
Description: “Tender and luscious, this delicate cookie is topped with sanding sugar after baking to complete its yumminess!”

Chocolate Chip and Cacao Nib

($2.99 Each)
Description: “This sophisticated cookie has a double chocolate flavor with the Valrhona chocolate and cacao nibs with a tiny bit of salt on the finish.”
Verdict:
Like
These are lovely shortbread cookies that aren’t overly dry.  They didn’t blow me away as super amazing, but they were quite nice and would pair well with a cup of tea or coffee.

McCrea’s

About the Company:
“The company uses local, real-food ingredients and packages its caramel in beautiful compostable containers.  Everything is made in America.  In fact, McCrea’s is a Good Food Award winner, an honor given to outstanding American food producers and farmers who provide their ingredients.  The company was also selected by Martha Stewart as an American Made finalist, by USA Today as a Best Gift for Foodies and by People Magazine for inclusion in the publication’s gala gift bags.”

Cape Cod Sea Salt Caramel
(5.5 oz Tube: $14.95)
Description: “Sweet caramel with savory flakes of coast a New England se salt. A walk in the surf.”
Verdict:
Miss
While I thought the caramel had a wonderful buttery taste, I did not care for the sea salt addition.  It was like eating caramel that accidentally got some sand in it.  I’d have loved to sample one of their offerings without the salt.

Treat Bake Shop
About the Company:
“Sarah started her culinary career as an early-morning bake in college.  After college, she studied with a pastry chef in France and got a master’s in Library and Information Science with an emphasis on Collections and Food Research.  She then started working at food magazines, went to Japan, wrote, and published a highly praised cookbook, A Cook’s Journey to Japan.  All of her experience led up to the moment in November 2011, Sarah made the scary, but more-so exciting, decision to take the plunge and open Treat Bake Shop  – business focused on sourcing the highest-quality ingredients to produce unforgettable baked goods delivered with exceptional customer service.  Treat Bake Shop’s first product, Spiced Pecan, was inspired by her childhood friend, Sarah, and became an instant hit.”

Candied Pecans
(3 oz Bag: $5.95)
Description: “A salty-sweet treat with great crunch. Perfect with a little white wine…a creamy cheese…on salads. And of course, on their own.”
Verdict:
Love!
This is so beautifully packaged and would make a wonderful wedding or party favor.  These nuts were delicious and not overly sweet.  And as mentioned in the description, they are a versatile treat that can be used in as an ingredient in a larger dish or paired with other savory components.  My favorite item in the box!

Torie and Howard
About the Company:
“Coincidentally, along the road somewhere, each of them experienced a health related event that would have a significant impact on their life.  For Howard, Losing over a hundred pounds led to a renewed focus on eating as healthy and nutritionally conscious as possible.  For Torie, it was the onset of severe food allergies that forced her to make serious changes in her life and in her diet.  With a new dedication to nutrition in their lives and the relative lack of healthy, indulgent snacks on the market, it became apparent that the time was right to fulfill their dream of starting their own snack food company.  And so Torie & Howard was born, out of a mutual love of delicious and all natural foods that soothe the soul and nourish the body.

Pomegranate & Nectarine Hard Candy
(2 oz: $3.99)
Description: “Unique, sophisticated sweets brimming with fresh flavors that taste of real luscious fruit-picked straight from the garden.  You’ve certainly never tasted anything like these candies.  Carefully crafted from all natural ingredients, the candies feature sophisticated dual flavors of tart California pomegranate with sweet freestone nectarine.  No additives, no artificial flavors or colors.  Just pure. fresh. delicious satisfaction.”
Verdict:
Like!
These hard candies definitely have a fresh fruit taste, unlike so many that have a chemical or overly processed flavor.  The tin is lovely as well and is nice to keep in your bag or car when you need a little pick me up.

 OVERALL

Verdict: Hit!
Even though I receive this box free in order to review it, I’ve had some issues in the past with the price tag relative to the value you receive.  This month marks a huge improvement in that area.  The cost of a box is $25 and the estimated retail of the items comes out to $19.73, but that’s without shipping.  The flat rate shipping just from the Treat Bake Shop would set you back $9.99.  I don’t think a consumer would be able to get all these items for $25 or less on their own, so we’ll check off the value box as a win.

I thought the treats in this box had a nice variety and were all quite sophisticated.  Orangeglad is a great gift for someone who you may not know super well or someone who you know in a less personal capacity – like a work colleague or business associate.  It has a lovely high end feel and most people would find at least one treat in the box they’d enjoy.

Have you ever given a subscription as a gift?
If so, what was it and how did the recipient like it?

Orglamix Glam Box: April 2017 Best In Beauty + 25% Off

Another day, another late sub box review.  Promoting my new book, “The Ice Maiden’s Tale” has proven both stressful and time-consuming.  Apparently you can’t just tell people it’s an awesome book and beg them to leave you an Amazon review.  Do you think bribing people with cookies would work?  I’d bake them myself and everything.

Anyways, I am shamefully behind with so many great box reviews and posts, so I’m going to just try to power through my backlog and see where we end up.
Today I have my April Orglamix Glam Box that had “Best in Beauty” theme.  “Spring is in full bloom, and as the sun comes out and jackets come off, the desire to lift a few layers (and minutes) from our makeup routine is intensifying.  To help, this month we’ve turned to our bestselling favorites for a makeup bag refresh.  These 5-star products are an easy way to sharpen up your look but still keep it low key.”
If you’d like to try out a box of vegan, cruelty free natural beauty products for yourself use the coupon code VEGAN to save 25%.
My packaging even came with this adorable tiny little stars.

Bubble Blender Silicone Makeup Applicator
(Estimated Retail: $15.00)
Description: ”…It’s time to throw out all of your makeup sponges and never waste expensive makeup again. The Bubble Blender’s innovative and revolutionary design allows you to blend all your liquid or cream based makeup without any waste.  THE secret lies in its nonporpous design which does not absorb makeup like a sponge but still maintains flawless application.”
Verdict: Love!
I’ve seen these style of applicators on beauty blogs and been dying to try one out. I can’t wait to see how it works with my go to CC cream from It Cosmetics.  I’d love to see if this can replace my makeup sponges since I find cleaning the sponges tedious and since this product is non-porous it seems like it’s super easy to keep hygienic.

llume Cream Luminizer
(Estimated Retail: $18.00)
Description: “Our must have, bestselling cream highlighter adds a youthful glow with a transparent, dewy finish.  Use Luminizer on cheek bones, brow bones and eyelids to create a sensuous, luminous glow.  IT’s not shiny, greasy or glittery.  Use it anywhere you want gorgeous, glowing skin.  Simply blend over cheek bones, down the bridge of the nose and at the bow of the lips.”
Verdict: Like!
I like the subtle sheen of this Luminizer and that it’s not glittery.  It’s definitely a nice product for the more natural makeup looks I like to go for in Spring and Summer.

Mud Treatment Hydrating
(Estimated Retail: $15.00)
Description: “A 5-minute professional-quality mud mask treatment to deliver instant, extreme hydrating. Our Hydrating Mud Treatment uses the newest, most advanced and extreme hydration active technologies.  It moisturizes, restores, replenishes, and calms in just five minutes.”
Verdict: Hit!
I found that working in the garden and around the house has left my skin dry.  Once I actually have at least one bathroom in decent shape, I’m going to give myself a nice facial and try out this mud treatment.

V.I.Pretty lip + cheek gelle

(Estimated Retail: $18.00)
Description: ”Wear the first rosy glow of Spring with this multi-tasking lip & cheek stain.”
Verdict: Hit!
I adore cream blushes and this shade is lovely and subtle.

5 Star Fab natural eyeshadow
(Estimated Retail: $12.50)
Description: ”One part unicorn, one part mermaid and three parts magic combine for a wash of rainbow color and all around total gorgeousness.  So without further ado, here is the makeup look everyone will be copying; watercolor eyes…Experiment with extra-colorful pastel, opalescent lids.
Verdict: LOVE!
You had me at mermaid.  Watercolor eyes are one of my favorite looks and I tend to hoard eye products in soft oceany pastels.  I love the shimmer to this.  Mineral eyeshadows go on so beautifully that I’ve kind of become addicted to them.  At first I was intimidated with trying to use them, but they go on smoothly and blend easily.  Definitely try them out if you haven’t.

OVERALL

Verdict:
Love!
I receive this for free in order to review it, but the regular cost is $29 and the estimated retail value comes out to $78.50.  I think for $29 this box delivered a nice variety of products that would appeal to most subscribers.  I love how Orglamix always surprises me with something new and unexpected (like the silicone blender), and I find that it’s one of the most consistent beauty boxes in terms of providing items that I will use and enjoy.  If you’re looking for a unique beauty box, definitely give this one a try.

Play by Sephora: April 2017

I finally got a moment to catch a breath from the endless home renovation projects and the book release madness for my debut novel, The Ice Maiden’s Tale, to take stock of my box reviews. Unsurprisingly I’m hella behind, so today I’ve got my April Play by Sephora box.  There was a billing snafu in March, so I ended up missing that box, but I’m picking right back up with my April one.  This is one of the best budget beauty boxes at only $10 per month, so if you want to try a sub, but don’t have a lot of spare dinero, consider Sephora.

If you want to see my box reveals as soon as I get them, follow me on Instagram for real time spoilers.
April’s theme was “Step It  Up” – “Upgrade your everyday routine with best in class products to set yourself up for beauty success. Try an eyeliner beloved by makeup artists, skincare selected for your specific for your specific concerns, and more must-haves to step up your beauty game.”

Peter Thomas Roth Water Drench Hyaluronic Cloud Cream
(Full Size: $52.00)
Description: “Lightweight moisturizer with airy formula delivers a burst of hydration with three different types of hyaluronic acid.”
Verdict: Like
“Hyaluronic Cloud Cream” sounds like a lab experiment meets an RPG game.  It sounds interesting and I’m always up to try a new night time moisturizer so I’ll happy to test it out.

philosophy Purity Made Simple Cleanser
(Full Size: $24.00)
Description: “A gentle, award-winning one-step face wash that cleans, removes makeup, tones and lightly hydrates for a fresh complexion.
Verdict: Miss
I know some people adore and swear by Philosophy products but they just never work for me.  Their “hope in a jar” cream was more like “fish on my face” and this cleanser just feels way too stripping.  It gives you that “squeaky” clean that makes your skin feel so dry.  It just didn’t work for me.

Smashbox Iconic Photo Finish Foundation Primer
(Full Size: $36.00)
Description: “This iconic primer creates the perfect canvas for make-up application while leaving skin soft and silk-smooth”
Verdict: Repeat Offender
Is there a beauty sub box or freebie bag in existence that hasn’t had a Smashbox primer in it?  I swear I think I’ve got a hundred of these over the years.  If you’re into beauty you’ve probably gotten this sample before.  I’d rather see more new and interesting products.

SEPHORA COLLECTION
Waterproof Eye Makeup Remover
(Full Size: $11.00)
Description: “A gentle, go-to waterproof makeup remover perfect for sensitive eyes and enriched with lash-strengthening vitamins and extracts.”
Verdict: Not for me
I don’t care for these type of eye removers and prefer the oil based cleansers which work better for my skin.  This one was much gentler than most eye makeup removers, but still completely great for my sensitive skin.

MAKE UP FOR EVER
Aqua XL Eye Pencil Waterproof Eyeliner

(Full Size: $21.00)
Description: Beloved by makeup professionals, this creamy, budge-proof eyeliner glides an easily and leaves an intense, jet-black color.”
Verdict: Love!
Makeup Forever is one of my favorite brands so even though a black eyeliner is a bit boring I’m still happy to have this.  It’s a great size for travel or to keep in your purse’s makeup bag.

This Month’s Perfume Pick:
Miu Miu L’Eau Bleue (1.7 oz $90.00)
Description: “This fresh, floral fragrance consists of lily of the valley and notes of honeysuckle to evoke the beginning of springtime.”
Verdict: Too floral
As usual this perfume doesn’t work for me.  The floral is too strong – I think it’s the lily that is off-putting.

OVERALL
Verdict
: Not my favorite
I found this box pretty boring.  Except for the eyeliner I didn’t really love anything.  The choices fit the “beauty routine” but there needed to be a more interesting element here.  Maybe a lip balm from a new brand instead of the tired Smashbox primer?  I paid $10.70, which is a little much since I only liked two items, but hopefully future boxes will be more interesting.

Do you like more practical items in your beauty boxes or more unique and trendy things?

THE BACKSTORY
Each month Play by Sephora, will send you 5 deluxe samples handpicked from their shelves (plus a fragrance bonus) – all in a collectible bag.

Popsugar: May 2017 Must Have + July Spoiler & $15 Off Coupon!

So as usual I’m playing catch up with my boxes.  Today I’ve got a Popsugar July spoiler and a fabulous coupon deal along with my May review. Let’s jump right in!

JULY SPOILER & COUPON

Save $15 off the July 2017 Box!
Use Code: July15
I’m loving the towel spoiler because it will go perfect in my master bath.  I’m interested to see what we get for the “camp” inspiration.

Now onto the main attraction…

MAY MUST HAVE BOX
Now unfortunately, my box was missing the first item..

Lipstick Queen Mornin’ Sunshine

(Suggested Retail: $25)
Description: “This magical lipstick transforms from yellow to a custom coral shade that’s different for every user.  It’ll keep you lips moisturized with vitamin E and will make you smile every time you see the vibrant color.”
Verdict: Miss then a Hit!
I looked high and low in my box, but alas there was no lipstick included.  I love the Lipstick Queen brand and own a few of their products, so I was super excited to try a custom coral shade for Summer.  When I contacted Popsugar about my missing lipstick, they quickly mailed out a new one and you can see it in the next shot.  I was a little disappointed that I didn’t have the product right away, but mistakes happen.

Samantha Faye Inspiration Cuff
(Suggested Retail: $60)
Description: Wear this POPSUGAR-exclusive cuff as a daily reminder that you are good! This stunning adjustable cuff has words to live by carved into it: “Be good. Do good. Feel good.” It’s the motivational mantra you’ll be inspired by. The bracelet can be stacked with your favorite jewelry or worn alone for a minimalistic style.”
Verdict:
Guess I’m just a “bad”girl
I adore quotes and I love jewelry with interesting or compelling phrases but for me this one is uninspired and super corny: “Be good. Do good Feel good.”  I don’t need a reminder that I’m good.  I prefer a reminder to kick ass and take names, or at the very least a “What would Buffy Do”.  Maybe it’s just me but I find the saying on this bracelet so silly I don’t even know who to gift this too.

TOCCA Voyage Montauk 3 oz Candle
(Suggested Retail: $20.00)
Description: ”’ This beautiful candle by Tocca is a classic. It helps clear away the stress from the day. Set the mood as you pamper yourself with some well-deserved downtime. The fresh scent of this candle will evoke memories of ocean air while making it easy to unwind.”
Verdict: Love!
TOCCA scents can sometimes be a bit strong for me, but this one smelled so summery and lovely.

Swing Design Essex Silver Plate Frame
(Suggested Retail: $13.00)
Description: Encase your favorite friend or family moment in this chic silver-plated picture frame. It holds a 4″x 6″ photo that can be placed on your bedside table or bookcase or instead given as a Mother’s Day gift to someone special to brighten up their day.”
Verdict: Grandma called and she wants her sub box back
I think I fell asleep from how boring this is.  A silver picture frame. How is this a “must have”?  It’s more like an “everyone has”.  Popsugar, you have to try harder.

Nicely Noted Exclusive Must Have Card Collection
(Suggested Retail: $17.50)
Description: “Go beyond a text or email and write handwritten notes to let your friends and family know they’re appreciated. The adorable brightly illustrated cards include a thank you, birthday, and hello stationery pack exclusively designed for the Must Have box.”
Verdict: And naptime continues
I love getting stationary, but I like it to be interesting and this set just doesn’t seem all that compelling.  It’s exclusive to this box but pretty much a snooze fest.  This is supposed to be new and trendy, how about something with a little more edge or at least a little more unusual?

Southern Culture Artisan Foods, Inc Strawberry Cream Muffin Mix
(Suggested Retail: $7.99)
Description: “Re-create the sweet memories of baking with your grandma with this all-natural muffin mix. This mix contains real strawberries, all-natural flour, and pure cane sugar to ensure your muffins are light and fluffy every time.”
Verdict: Hit!
I always love getting baking mixes and strawberries are fitting for the season.  I’ll probably use this to make some work breakfasts.

OVERALL:
(Note: Because the lipstick was missing when I received my box, it’s also missing from the full box photo)
Verdict: Some Bad Choices
This box was really split down the middle for me.  I loved the lipstick, the candle and the baking mix.  I found the cards and frame to be uninspired, and the bracelet to be silly.  Thankfully, I only paid $20.46 because of the six month discount I nabbed last year.  For that price tag, I’m fine with not loving everything in the box.  I’m back to full price boxes in June, so hopefully Popsugar will step it up.  While this box had an estimated retail value of $143.49, I can’t see many subscribers getting psyched to receive a small boring picture frame and some notecards.

I’ve got lots more box reviews coming up including a FREE box, so be sure to check back!

Freedom Japanese Market: April 2017 + Special Offer

Today I’ve got a really fun post I’ve been saving.  The wonderful folks from Freedom Japanese Market sent me their April snack box to review.  It’s got all sorts of fun and unique treats straight from Japan.  Plus if you mention Subscription Therapy, in your order notes, you can receive a free bonus candy in your first box!

Freedom Japanese Market sends you a monthly box of treats shipped fresh from Japan.  Most of the items are sold exclusively in Japan and boxes contain some limited edition snacks and candies that are only in Japanese stores for a month or two.  About a pound of candy and snacks are packed into each box and an itemized list with pictures is included in each box.

This adorable box was left out by my mailbox which my neighbors thankfully picked up before any of the local wildlife could get to it.

Inside we have a colorful snack guide plus an adorable origami sword.  Because these snacks aren’t available in the US, I’m not going to be pricing them out.

Now to the snacks!

Ume Paper
Description:
“Pickled plum in paper thin form – sweet and sour!”
Verdict:  Where’s the sweet?
Death people, this tasted like death.  Like if a Stephen King book turned into a fruit roll-up.

Mix Fruit Mochi
Description:
“Mini apple and pineapple flavored piece of sweet mocha (rice cakes).”
Verdict: Adorable!
I haven’t had a chance to try these yet, but they look adorable and apple and pineapple sound great.

Premium Umaibo
Description:
“Mozzarella and camembert cheese flavored puffed corn.”
Verdict:
  A cheese doodle on steroids
Imagine a cheese doodle made with stronger cheese.  Like almost but not quite stinky cheese.  Not bad, but nothing I’d go searching for.

Shimi Choco Corn
Description:
“Cute star-shaped crispy corn puffs coated in strawberry chocolate.”
Verdict:
  The strawberry is a lie.
I was so excited for these because no one loves artificial strawberry flavor like I do, but there was this strange sort of texture after eating these.  I can’t really explain it but it was so unpleasant and the strawberry taste was just odd. These were disappointing.

UFO Ramune
Description:
“Ramune flavored hard candy in four flavors: yogurt, peach, apple, and cider.”
Verdict:
  Sounds interesting
I didn’t get to try these but “yogurt” flavored hard candy sounds intriguing.  It can be either horrific or amazing, there really isn’t an in-between.

Nagewa
Description: “Beef consommé flavored ring shaped potato crisps are fun to play with and eat!”
Verdict:  Hamburger Magic
I had no idea what Beef consommé tastes like, but apparently it tastes like a hamburger.  Like a hamburger with ketchup and pickles on it and everything.  These little potato straws were like you took a hamburger happy meal and magically shoved it into an itty bitty crisp.  This was my favorite item in the box.

Teriyaki Umaibo
Description: “Teriyaki burger flavored tube of puffed corn.”
Verdict:  Beefy cheese doodle
Another ginormous cheese doodle.  I’m not sure I would have guessed this was “burger” if I wasn’t told.  The taste was savory but without being immediately identifiable (if that makes sense).

Caplico Mini
Description: “Strawberry flavored aerated chocolate shaped like a mini ice cream cone!”
Verdict:  Wafer-y goodness
This strawberry treat made up for the other one.  It was like a wafer cookie with lots of extra filling.

Pizza Umaibo
Description: “Pizza flavored tube of puffed corn”
Verdict:  MOAR GIANT CHEESEDOODLES!
This cheese doodle had that sort of sharp pizza flavor.  Not bad, but not something I’d look to eat again.

Umaka!
Description: “Ramen chips flavored like champon, a Nagasaki noodle dish made of seafood and veggies.”
Verdict:  Mostly non-distinct
I try all these treats without reading the card first, because I figure that will give me the most honest impression.  I was worried this one would have fish in it based solely on the angry face and the little prawn.  I’d eat one chip and it would be a pretty bland then I’d try another and it would have a faint taste of fish.  They were interesting but didn’t live up to the exclamation point in the name.

Kabuki Cracker
Description: “These delicious rice crackers are stamped with famous kabuki emblems.”
Verdict:  Crunchy and bland
I passed these over to my boyfriend and his verdict was that they were crunchy and pretty bland which is kind of a theme with a lot of the rice based Japanese snacks.

Un-Choco
Description: “Mini grape flavored chocolate balls in cute animal packaging!”
Verdict:  Look at that face!!
I didn’t even try these but I love them. Look at that cute little face.  I don’t know if it’s a koala bear or some kind of alien hybrid animal, but I love it.  Packaging wins me over every time.

Caramel Corn
Description: “A seasonal exclusive!  Sweet rare cheesecake flavored curls of puffed corn.”
Verdict:  Lightly sweet
These corn puffs were very delicately sweetened and I thought they were a nice treat.  They almost reminded me of a lighter version of the honey flavored Chex Mix.

BONUS!
Chewing Straw Candy
Description: “Straw-shaped grape flavored gummy candy.”
Verdict:  Not quite for me
Normally gummies win me over, but I’m not a huge fan of sweet and sour gummies and these had that cloying sweet and bitingly sour thing going on.  But someone who enjoys those types of gummies would probably love this.

OVERALL

Verdict:
Hit!
Now, this box normally costs $24.99, which seems fair to me for a box shipped from Japan with this many treats. I think this would make a fun gift for a teen or even someone away at college.  Even if the treats aren’t quite suited to our Western palates, they are a lot of fun to try out.  I always enjoy learning about different foods and cultures, even if at the end of the day they aren’t something I fall in love with.  The packaging on this sub is adorable and I thought there was a good variety of sweet/salty/sour.  The one improvement I could see with this box is that we received three Umaibos, but maybe instead we could have gotten  one or two and a different type of snack.

I think this is a really fun sub and if you love Japanese snacks or fun unique food items, you may want to give it a try.

Have you ever tried snacks from other countries?
If so, what did you think of them?

Rachel Zoe Box of Style: Summer 2017

To kick off the beginning of summer, I’ve got my favorite sub box – Rachel Zoe Box of Style. This is a quarterly subscription that features high end brands and will set you back $100 for your seasonal fix.

Note from Rachel Zoe: “More than just a season, summer is a state of mind. For this Box of Style edition, my team and I wanted to bring that wanderlust the warm months evoke in all of us to life..”

The Sheer Perfection

Helena Quinn Kimono: (Estimated Retail: $120.00)
Description: “Versatility is the key to a polished closet.  From the beach to the stree, this muted floral stunner pulls together any ensemble—instant chic.”
Rachel’s Styling Ideas: “Stow in your beach or work bag for an effortless throw-on-and-go daytime option.  Layer over a crisp blouse and trousers for an elevated evening look.”
Verdict: There’s nothing that gets me looking forward to summer more than getting clothes I can’t fit into.
Why Rachel?  Why have you forsaken me?  We’ve gotten clothing items in the past but they were over-sized enough that they could fit a very large variety of women.  This is not very big and it has a belt so it just looks odd if it doesn’t fit you properly. It’s so beautiful and I’m epically sad that I can’t fit into it.  I’m so disappointed because there are so many fashion things that larger size women miss out on.  This box was something that even plus size women could enjoy. Now, not so much.  Rachel Zoe also has added in a customization option and this is an “exclusive collaboration” so there’s no excuse why they couldn’t include clothing with sizing options. Rachel’s going to have to score a lot of points in this box to win me over.

The Ace of Shades

Rael Durante Sunglasses Tortoise Shell (
Estimated Retail: $150.00)
Description: “There’s no such thing as too many sunnies, and this modern twist on a timeless style completes any look, causal or glam.”
Rachel’s Reasons to Love: “Classic wear-with-anything hues makes for easy accessorizing.  The updated cat-eye complements a variety of face shapes.”
Verdict: Love!
Cat eye glasses are my favorite shape and we were able to choose between black or tortoise shell.  I find tortoise shell complements my hair and pale skin better so I opted for that shade.  They are fun, classic and complimentary to a lot of face shapes.  A great choice.

The Wish You Were Here

The Brave Collection – Compass Necklace
(Estimated Retail: $115.00)
Description: “Summer is synonymous with travel, and this handmade necklace is a chic symbol of those sweet escapes we look forward to all year long.”
Style with Purpose: “This piece is handmade by fair-trade artisans in Cambodia, and 10% of profits are donated toward the fight against human trafficking.”
Verdict: Love!
Delicate gold jewelry is perfect for summer. I adore unique pieces and this one also donates profits to a worthy cause so that makes it even lovelier.  I have a silver talisman necklace that reads “courage without fear” that I wear regularly and this piece has a very similar feel, so excited to add it to my collection.

The Out of Office

Sole Society Straw Panama Hat: (Estimated Retail: $27.00)
Description: “A wide-brimmed hat is one of the most glamourous ways to protect your face from the sun, and this playful iteration adds a bit of splash to any outfit.”
Rachel’s Styling Hacks: “Tie on a scarf underneath for a snug-wind-proof fit.  Pack upside down and stuff crown with clothing to save space and maintain shape when traveling.
Verdict: Cheap Looking
Maybe this is just me but I think the pompoms on this hat really make it look cheap.  I love hats and collect them, but this one just seems like something you could find at a low end accessory store.  I like the idea of including a sunhat, I just don’t care for the one they chose.

The Jet Set

Beautycounter “Color Pinch” Cream Blusher in Hibiscus:
(Estimated Retail: $37.00)

Protect Stick Sunscreen:
(Estimated Retail: $18.00)
Description: “A bright cream blush and a fresh, breathable sunscreen are summer’s dynamic beauty duo and the ultimate way to bring out your natural glow.”
Rachel’s Reasons to Love: “Clean, good-for-you ingredients—totally paraben and silicone-free.  Double-duty color: Dab Cream Blusher on cheeks and lips for a subtle pop.  No streaks—safer, mineral sunscreen goes on clear.”
Verdict:
Hit!
I love cream blushes and this one looks perfect for summer.  (How could something called Hibiscus not be?) I didn’t swatch it yet since I’m still working through some other makeup first.  I’m always on the lookout for new sunscreen products because the sun is my mortal enemy.  Currently, I don’t have a solid stick product so I’m happy to try this one out.

OVERALL:

Verdict:
This is why doves cry.
Let’s start with the good stuff.  The box fit the summer theme perfectly and the estimated retail value was a whopping $467.  I thought the blush, sunscreen, glasses and necklace were all on point, and I will enjoy using those items.  Unfortunately, Rachel Zoe opted to include a piece of clothing with a value of $150 that could be a potential fit issue for a lot of customers, and was for me.  That’s a huge amount to deduct from the box.  So for a plus size lady your box value automatically falls down to a $317 before you even start looking at the products. As for the hat, it’s not the quality I expect from a $100 box or from Rachel Zoe.  It’s more suited to a discount store in the mall.  It didn’t scream out luxury.

I’ve always felt Box of Style was very thoughtfully curated to work for women of all shapes, sizes and ages, but this box clearly wasn’t put together with that idea in mind.  Even though I do like the majority of the items, the kimono was so disappointing that it ruined the whole experience for me.  As a pricier sub I expect better.

How do you feel about sized clothing in sub boxes?
Are they just part of the sub box gamble or do you think they are unfair to subscribers?

2017 Precious Moments Collectors’ Club

Okay so I’m going to be honest, I am not the target demographic for today’s subscription. The Precious Moments Collectors’ Club  is for folks that collect and love those little wide eyed Precious Moments statues that have graced the shelves of many beloved grandmothers.  I do, however, understand the love of collecting.  If I’d had a house before now, I’d probably have ginormous collections of all kinds of random stuff.  For me, there is an undeniable appeal in finding all the cool versions of something you love and building a pretty display for them. I’ve got a collection of antique brooches, nail polish, and cookbooks so who am I to cast stones if you adore little porcelain figures?  That’s why when the wonderful Precious Moments folks asked me to review their product, I decided to give it a shot.

So this subscription is a little different than most.  You pay $59.99 for the year and get a lovely package with free collectibles as a welcome gift.  Your membership includes perks such as a free quarterly subscription to MOMENTS magazine, free shipping on all your purchases for a year along, access to Members Only figurines along with other perks on the Precious Moments site.  For all the details, jump down to the Backstory.

So my lovely logoed box arrived and I was interested to see how it was packaged.

Sandwiched inside was another smaller box.

I opened it to uncover a little pouch with a cute collectible bracelet.

Beyond that is another little box with a plaque.

(This is like a nesting doll of collectibles!)

Finally the last layer reveals a cute “Live’s Always Greener With You by My Side” figurine that is the “2017 Symbol of Membership”.

Figurines aren’t my collectible of choice, but I must admit found that tiny little porcelain bunny, too adorable.

Verdict: If you’re a collector, this would be great for you.
If you collect these figures, this subscription would probably be a lot of fun for you and give you some nice discounts.  The $59.99 seems to be the cost of the welcome figurine, so if you love that little statue, everything else that comes with membership would just be a nice bonus.

Do you collect anything?
If so, what is it and would you join a subscription for it?
